I know you are probably expecting me to now delve into the causes of rejection and most definitely one of the first things that popped into your mind is "what THEY did to me"..... take a moment here. The biggest chain that will bind us is the one that makes us think that we are relinquished of our responsibility to be accountable for our actions (whether deliberate or mistakenly committed, or even a life you just happened to find yourself growing up in). This week I have been reminded that I have an equal role to play in some of the things I have lost in my life. Therefore, I am not a victim of my situation. Do you know what this means? It means I control the narrative now. It means I live in my truth. It means I let go of the need to lead a life of self righteousness and surrender to a life of humility to God knowing I am imperfect. We are not perfect beings, truth of the matter is that it is easy to take the burden of responsibility and place it in someone else's hands. Because if THEY rejected you, then it becomes THEIR responsibility to accept you. It stops being your responsibility to out love and embrace yourself to a point where people's perception of you or whether they accept you or not phases you. (Read that again, it was a hard one to swallow even for me) My spiritual grandfather preached on Luke 23:34 "Forgive them father for they know not what they do" I have read this scripture so many times and have applied it to forgiveness being granted to people who have "done something" to me and never to myself directly. Yet it is I who needs forgiveness because I do not know how to properly handle rejection, rebuke, correction, you name it. And because I do not know how to do that, I do not know how to exercise power over my mental health. Listen, i know now that I have the power to determine the level of the effect and impact of rejection from people on my heart, mind and soul. WHAT DO WE DO WITH JESUS? “Very early in the morning, the leading priests, the elders, the teachers of the law, and all the Jewish council decided what to do with Jesus” (Mark 15:1). Wait, “what to do with Jesus”? Early THIS morning, amid the shaking of “normal life,” we, too, need to decide. What are WE doing with Jesus? What are we doing with His broken body and shed blood, all that He’s purchased for us, all the benefits that He’s given up His life to provide, all the access to Father’s heart that He purchased, all the peace, hope, love, protection. We either believe, or we don’t. We’re either all in, or we’re not. Beloved, believe. Be all in. No fear-based deciding. THIS morning, take eyes off fearful media and take time to look up. Take time to remember what He’s given us, promised us. Let WHO HE is dismantle the fear, demolish the worry, disassemble the doubt, destroy the hopelessness, and defeat every dispiriting, smelly, threatening situation we can’t seem to get out of. Let Him restrain the world’s sweeping fear. Resist the culture’s attempt to reduce us and dilute the reality of all Jesus. Boldly worship Him, loving Him back with all our heart, mind, strength, and soul. Oppose fear by trusting and praising Him, the giver of abundant life, the Good Shepherd who causes us to lack nothing. He’s worthy. Today, decide what we’re doing with Jesus. Before this day overwhelms us, determine to trust the One Who’s the Way, Truth and Life, the One Who’s our Light and Savior, the One Who’s our Shelter, Refuge, and Defender, the One with good plans for our lives, our Valiant/Dread Champion and Victor. He Who is Relentless Affection, Eternal Love, is worthy to be fully loved, obeyed, honored, and praised. Today, we’re not giving fear any thought, emotion, energy, or time, for we belong to Jesus. “I am my Beloved’s and His desire is for me” (Song 7:10). Live today desired by Him. Today, arise. Take a stand for Jesus, living fully in His embrace.

💌Transparent Moment: 💌 Swipe ⏩⏩to hear how I became a spoken-word poet. My journey began in 10th grade English class, and shortly after I embarked on this path, Ms. Perez, my English teacher, mentor, and inspiration, passed away suddenly on vacation. At my high school graduation on June 27th, 2011, I received a memorial award in her honor for embodying what poetry means today. Grief made it hard to write—I had so many questions, and her absence left me feeling lost. I performed here and there but grief kept hitting as I experienced the loss of those that planted seeds in my life. Grief has a way of stifling creativity, but I fought back. I thought it was just writer’s block, but it was actually the weight of loss. I lost Ms. Perez, Dr. Roamos, aunts, Godfather, etc, and silence became my companion. Thank God for therapy, community, and HOPE. In honor of National Poetry Month, I want to publicly thank Ms. Perez for believing in me. Rest well, Queen ❤️. Now, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month and because May is my birth month, I’m proud of the grace I’ve given myself, as I prayed through the silence for this moment to come.
