Don’t you think there should be a candy cane emoji? Obsessed with this one made from melon & pomegranate seeds (📷@edible_food_art_for_kids) . Pomegranate seeds (aka arils) are such a great fruit to try with kids, especially as berries become harder to find. Pomegranate seeds are packed with fiber, protein?!, Vitamin C, potassium and one of the highest concentrations of antioxidants. They are incredibly powerful little foods that have antibacterial properties and so much more. . I know I should feel well-rested today, but anyone else feeling all mixed up from daylight savings? Thank g-d for coffee. I love my morning coffee and I definitely look forward to it on a day like this. But, while caffeine in moderation is totally ok for most adults, it is not recommended for kids and teens. Caffeine is a drug - hence why so many of us love it. . In children and teens, even small amounts: -impact sleep -increase moodiness and anxiety -cause upset stomach -effect growth & brain development . Recommended limits: Teens: <100 mg/day. FYI: almost every coffee type drink at Starbucks has more than that amount. For younger children: There are no set recommendations, but younger children should have less than that and ideally none . Hi! I’m Jodi, a Registered Dietitian and nutrition consultant. I thought I would introduce myself since I haven’t in a while. This is me - where you will almost always find me - in the kitchen. I am double fisting drinks, which I often do, coffee in one hand and my green smoothie in the other. 🎃👻How are you celebrating Halloween this year? We haven’t figured it out yet, but whatever it is, I am sure my kids will end up with TONS of candy. I often get asked how I manage this 🍭with my kids. . On Halloween, I pretty much let me kids eat whatever they want. It’s part of Halloween and a lesson (that is sometimes learned) about eating too much. -The next day we pick out candy to donate - usually their least favorites and all the nut & peanut candies we may have accidentally ended up with. -Day 2 they can have 3-4 pieces. -Day 3 is 2 pieces and then 1 piece a day for about a week after. By then, through a combination of them and me, they sort of forget about it. It gets tucked away in the closet often forgotten about for a long time. . 🍫And, I love chocolate, but most packaged candy has been cheapened over the years with junk ingredients and barely resembles chocolate. Do you have a food you don’t really like? The thing is that most of us usually eat within our comfort zone and stay away from foods we DON’T like. And, yet we are often telling our kids to try new foods without thinking about how hard that is. . For me, that food is avocado. Has anyone else been doing any reflecting recently? Back when school closed in March, I remember my kids asking if by Halloween everything would be fine so they could trick or treat. Of course, I said yes! Who could have known then that 7 months later we would be trying to figure out how to have Halloween in a safe way. . So, I have been trying to think about the silver linings of the last 7 months like the road trip we took to my son’s camp this weekend where we would never normally be in the fall or apple picking a few weeks ago (which I used to make these Apple Carrot Cake Breakfast Muffins) or the many more family meals, conversations and silly games we don’t normally have time for. 💙💜Can you believe this pasta was colored with natural food colors?💙💜 📷@kriskaipo via @superfoods.ae There are so many ways that food can be colored WITHOUT using artificial colors. Look for ingredients like blue spirulina, butterfly pea powder (like what was used here), paprika, beet juice, beta carotene and turmeric. . It’s best to limit artificial colors like red 40 and yellow 5 which can cause hyperactivity in sensitive kids, allergic reactions and are likely questionable for our kid’s health (many of these are not allowed to be used in other countries without putting a warning on them). . It doesn’t mean kids can never have them, but it’s best if they are not part of foods you give your kids on a daily basis. 💚“Can I have a SNACK”? Does this phrase often follow your child saying they aren’t hungry any more? If so, you are not ALONE. Even if you try to listen to your kids and trust when they are full, it’s hard when they only eat a few bites and then ask for snacks. . How do you know if they ate enough at mealtime? . Kids need snacks. It’s normal to be hungry 2 - 3 hours after they eat. If your child is asking for snacks 5, 10 and 20 minutes after eating, they probably DIDN’T eat enough food. . What can you do? -Encourage your child to eat until they are full -Don’t give in to requests for snacks 10 min later -Distract your child and tell them you will have a snack soon. Try to stretch it to at least another 30-40 min.(I know this can lead to short-term tantrums -NOT FUN, but so much better in the long term) -When kids learn they can’t have a snack instead of a meal, they learn to fill up more at meal time . I think I’m kind of in denial about summer being over, especially when it was in the 70s in NY yesterday. But, one of the saddest parts of summer being over for me is that it’s harder to get certain fruits. Enter FROZEN FRUIT🍓 . Did you know that frozen fruit is as nutritious if not MORE so than fresh? Frozen fruit is flash frozen at its peak when it has the MOST nutrition. Fresh fruit often travels long distances or amounts of time until you eat it. It starts to lose nutrients the longer it has been off the plant. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t eat fresh fruit, but FROZEN is a great option. Frozen fruit is also generally LESS EXPENSIVE💵 . 🍣Is RAW FISH safe for your kids🍣 I get a lot of questions about when it’s ok to give kids raw fish. The truth is that there is no exact rule about when it’s safe for kids to eat raw fish. . The concern is the bacteria in uncooked fish which can cause food poisoning. In the US, it is generally recommended to wait until a child is 5 years old to give raw fish. At this age, a child’s immune system is considered developed and able to tolerate it better than for a toddler. . In other cultures, raw fish is often given at a much younger age, so by all means, do what works for your family. If you do choose to serve raw fish to toddlers, opt for reputable places and make sure to choose smaller fish that are lower in mercury (THAT Means limiting tuna) . A few other notes: 🐟Fish is one of the most common food allergens, so make sure to introduce COOKED fish early & often to babies. Packed with antioxidants, fiber, omega3s and beta carotene (super important for boosting immunity and helping your kid’s body respond to viruses — hello Covid). . Makes 9 muffins 3/8 c whole wheat flour 1/3 c all purpose flour 1 tbsp ground flaxseed 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp salt 1/8 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp cinnamon 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted 1/2 c maple syrup 1 large egg 1/2 c canned pumpkin 2 tbsp water 1/4 c raisins 1/4 c @enjoylifefoods dairy free chocolate chips Preheat oven to 350. Line muffin tin with liners. Mix together first 7 ingredients in medium bowl. In separate bowl, combine coconut oil and maple syrup. Stir in egg, pumpkin and water. Add dry ingredients. ❤️Double tap if your kids would rather eat something off YOUR plate❤️ Of course as I was photographing this breakfast, my 5 year old decided she wanted some (even though she wouldn’t have wanted it if I served it to her) . Chia Jam Yogurt Parfait Bowl (High fiber & protein breakfast for parents OR kids) 1 c Icelandic yogurt or plant based yogurt (mine is @so_delicious unsweetened coconut milk yogurt) 1/3 c @purely_elizabeth granola Strawberry peach chia jam (recipe below) . Chia jam is such a great swap for regular jam. Rather than just sugar, the chia seeds add fiber, protein, calcium, omega3s and so much more. . Use fresh or frozen fruit to make it, but make sure to choose dense fruits rather than something like melon. Check out my reels today to see how quick and easy this is to make. . Strawberry Peach Chia Jam 2 c (total) frozen strawberries/peaches 1 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp chia seeds 1 tbsp honey (optional) Cook fruits over medium heat until they break down - about 5 minutes. Mash. Add lemon juice and chia seeds. Remove from heat and add honey if desired. 🍎FUN with APPLES🍎 Using a food as a “dish” is not only fun, but great for food exposure and the environment. I often cut the top off a bell pepper, scoop it out and fill it with hummus or guacamole. Then I stand some cut up veggies inside of my pepper bowl. . I am loving these apple “dishes” from 📷@kiddy_foodstories. They are perfect for this time of year filled with apples and honey or some other type of fruit. It’s a great way to expose kids to apples with the skin on even if you fill the apple with peeled pieces. . Apples are loaded with fiber, water, Vitamin C and lots of antioxidants. . 📚What to Eat for Back to School📚 (📷@cutechichai) . Anyone else think of Labor Day as the day that marks the end of summer and the beginning of school? I was reading a post yesterday by @drhelabar about routines for kids and how especially important that is with so much uncertainty about school this year. . This is especially true when it comes to eating, to make sure kids get what they need and aren’t endlessly snacking. Below is a good eating schedule for during the week for kids ages 4 - 11 (it might work for other ages too, depending on a variety of other factors). 7:00/8:00 AM breakfast (include protein and fruit to keep your child full) 10/10:30 snack (include a fruit or vegetable with some kind of carb or dairy product) 12/1:00 PM lunch (so many awesome lunch packing moms - please list your account on this post if you are one of them so people know to check out your lunches for ideas) 2:30/3:30 PM snack (same as above but this is a good time to allow for a more snacky/less healthy type of food) 5/6:00 PM dinner 6:30ish snack or dessert (try something with fruit such as banana nice cream, ice cream with berries, cone with fruit like my post from a few days ago) RD tip: I recommend separating dessert from dinner by at least a half hour so that kids don’t skip dinner knowing they are having dessert immediately. . But, it is possible to get kids to want healthy snacks — especially if you make it fun, easy and with lots of choices. Take a cue from 📷 @avivawittenberg by serving lots of healthy snacks in muffin tins. . ❓Do you know what that is next to the raspberries? ❤️Lupini beans. If you aren’t familiar with them, make sure to check them out. Super high in protein & fiber, they contain virtually no starch. They are often found in Mediterranean and middle eastern countries and are growing in popularity in the US. 🍦I 💚 Dessert🍦 Who else is with me? I love dessert & I serve it to my kids often. I’ve even had people ask me if I am really a nutritionist because of it. I think so much of healthy eating is having a healthy relationship with food which means being able to enjoy dessert. Swipe right to see 2 ways I serve these cones to my family. . Serve these cones filled with fruit (optional - have kids match the fruit color with the sprinkles) or with ice cream. . These are fun for kids to make: Chocolate Dipped Cones Take empty egg carton and turn upside down. Cut small holes in sections. Melt 1/2 c chocolate chips with 1 tbsp coconut oil. Dip waffle cone in chocolate or use spatula to spread. Dip in sprinkles or desired toppings. Stand cones in egg carton and refrigerate about 1 hour until hardened. .
