I have LOVED the way that running has gained popularity and traction over the past year. Seeing so many people who have previously identified as hating running, now off with their run clubs and signing up for events. It’s incredible! There have been a lot of running races recently - London marathon, London landmarks half marathon, Paris marathon, etc etc. and along with these races, I’ve been overhearing many conversations. A common theme is earning food. Allowing yourself certain foods or feeling deserving of certain foods, only because you have exercised a certain amount. And on the flip side, feeling like you can’t have these foods if you have exercised as much as others or an arbitrary rule you have placed on yourself. You deserve to eat the pastry even if you didn’t attend run club, you have permission to eat the same meal as your friends that ran the marathon even if you didn’t run, and exercise is so not about punishing yourself or burning calories.

Food language - it matters! My 5 yo son did this activity at school and as a Nutritionist who grew up exposed to 1980’s diet culture, it triggered me. I completely understand that they’re just trying to get the kids to make nourishing choices, but I’d love to see the language change. Healthy ✅ vs Unhealthy ❌ to something else. What could that be? I like calling it “everyday foods” and “sometimes foods.” When my kids have a chocolate or ice cream, I don’t want them to feel any shame or to think that they’re unhealthy. I’m a big proponent of balance and the 80/20 philosophy of making the majority of food choices nourishing. To me that means unprocessed, close to nature “whole foods.” These help us feel full, give us energy, stabilize mood and hormones. The last thing we need to tell ourselves when having something processed or high in sugar, if it’s only sometimes is that we’re unhealthy, bad, fat, shameful etc. I’ve seen clients with “orthorexia” which is an obsession with “clean eating” and that can have negative health effects due to the body dysmorphia and anxiety that comes with it. So let’s gently consider the food culture that we are passing on to our children. Consider language like “everyday and sometimes foods” and limit the negative language around one of life’s greatest joys - eating amazing food! What do you think? Is protein the ‘healthiest’ macro? 👀🍳🥩🍣 I see ‘healthy high protein’ recipes trending with heaps of engagement on social media right now, and while protein is absolutely important, I do wonder about the impacts of protein’s ‘health halo’ on our overall relationship with food. It can be helpful to get curious about why protein has been placed on such a pedestal. A lot of the protein focus is based on the idea that it keeps us feeling ‘fuller for longer’, and I see this often as part of low calorie diets or attempts to limit total food intake. I also see people having anxiety around not having protein in every meal or snack, or restricting other non-protein-rich food groups in their meals. Yes, protein has lots of benefits, but so do all of the macronutrients, including fats and carbs. Meet the 4 different types of hunger: . Physical hunger is the hunger you feel when your stomach is empty. You might experience physical hunger as a stomach growl, an energy dip, a headache, shakiness or dizziness. If your hunger cues aren’t super strong, you can keep yourself nourished by planning to eat every couple of hours. . Emotional hunger arises when we try to meet an emotional need with food. Sometimes food can be comforting, soothing, or joyful. Other times, food may only be a short term distraction. It’s important for emotional health to have more than just food in your emotional coping skills toolbox. . Taste hunger presents as a craving for a specific food. It’s ok to eat just because something tastes good! It’s also ok to wait until you are hungry again to honor that craving. When you make peace with food, you know that more tasty food is always coming, and taste hunger may not feel quite so urgent. . Practical hunger is physical hunger that you plan ahead to satisfy if you know you won’t have time or access to food when it’s time to eat again. For example, if you have a meeting during your lunch hour, you may choose to eat lunch early, even if you’re not hungry, because waiting to eat until after means getting ravenous. . Every type of hunger is valid! . Part of the process of intuitive eating is learning how to identify and honor each type of hunger in a way that makes you feel your best.
