The KN Book Club was out in force yesterday to meet @holliepoetry Holly McNish, an author of several contemporary poetry books, one of which, Slug, we read last year. She was great. Reading in French and English a selection poems from the same book (but with a rather different French title) ‘Je souhaite seulement que tu fasses quelque chose de toi’. She had a very large turn-out - far larger than the space permitted. The event was held in the new La Petite Gare bookshop https://www.lapetitegarereze.com/ A lovely new independent bookshop renovated from the old station building in Rézé. Holly was great. So open, natural and chatty - just like her books. She is on tour in France - Lyon next stop then back to Paris. I had the absolute treat of going to see Hollie McNish @holliepoetry at the Hall in Exeter @thehallexeter at a Mothers Who Make @mwmexeter gig. It was so good. Really, really funny and full of brilliant insights into the human condition. This poem of Hollie's got me thinking about what objects we leave behind and what those things mean to those we leave them to. What would you really love to inherit? What would mean the most? What item that you've inherited brings you happy memories of your lost loved ones? Is it an item, or is it something else that makes you think fondly of a person? Maybe a place reminds you of someone you've lost or the expression on someone else's face that's just like their's, or something else entirely. I have one that makes me really happy. My Granny Mary grew lots of raspberries, currants and gooseberries (goosegogs) and would cook them up into all sorts of delicious treats. So the fruit ripening, the taste and smell of it remind me of her. I love that those memories flood back every year right around her birthday. I make summer jam and think of her. Last night I was SO LUCKY not only to see @holliepoetry at @stamfordarts but also to catch up with my amazing friend @rattusrattini who I haven’t seen for 3 years. It was perfect to introduce her to Hollie’s poetry because we met in a hypnobirthing class 8 years ago when we were pregnant and clueless 😂 We bonded over a shared desire for a home birth and then over the disappointment of not having the births we wanted. We bonded over the sleepless nights and the loss of our sense of self. I will never forget sitting in a cafe in Muswell Hill when she said to me “why did nobody tell us just how shit it was going to be??” I wish I had read Nobody Told Me then. It’s honestly the book that every first time mum should read. Preparing for birth isn’t just about the physical arrival of your baby but the transition to motherhood too. Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker A brilliant book which explains in a pretty straightforward way why enough good quality sleep is essential, what gets in the way of sleep and how we can sleep better. A perfect poem by @holliepoetry for World Breastfeeding Week 2020 (World Baby Feeding Week-according to me). Not that we should have to defend our right to feed and nourish our children. And it’s no wonder this generation has so many issues with breastfeeding (if they choose to do so), when they haven’t had the opportunity to be exposed to it in the first place! When did we even start this whole idea of hiding such a natural and beautiful part of parenting and nurturing?!?!? 😔 Well, this is one aspect of what World Breastfeeding Week is all about! (Although I’d prefer to call it World Baby Feeding Week but I won’t get into that right now) Let’s normalise breastfeeding, support breastfeeders and those who can’t or choose not too as well.
