If you’re exploring Scotland, YOU NEED TO SEE THIS! This is McCulloch’s fossil tree on the Isle of Mull. Found in 1811, this 12-metre fossilised tree is a geological masterpiece sitting on the Ardmeanach peninsula. Sixty million years ago, North America pulled away from the continent, opening up the Atlantic Ocean. This created huge amounts of volcanic activity, causing lava to spew out of the fissures, including Ben More, which was once Britain’s largest volcano. The lava engulfed a forest of conifer trees, leaving their carbonised remains buried within. Here on the left, you can see its remains with the beautiful basalt columns curved around it. This walk is an incredible 18km adventure along Mull’s coast. Look out for views over Iona and Staffa, keep your eyes peeled for seals, sea eagles, and seaweed-eating feral goats and be careful on the sketchy ladders. Did you know that just a 20 minute drive from Aberdeen there is an incredible beach at Newburgh that hosts hundreds of seals basking on the shore!! (Depending on tide and season) Really is nature at its best! Who loves exploring nature?! After my early morning exploration, I stopped by @trelliscoffeeshop for a cracking breakfast. When you walk through their door you are met by a wonderful display of sweet treats that get your mouthwatering. If only I could have tried everyone of them 😂 wouldn’t put it me… instead I went for the banging French with bacon and maple syrup before tucking into a delightful cherry cheesecake donut. The cherry on the top of the East Coast adventure for sure! This spot is at the estuary of the River Ythan and is also home to 6,000 nesting birds which makes for quite the viewing. Especially at low tide where Eiders are able to feed on the submerged mussel beds. Out sharp this morning to explore the Bullers of Buchan and Slains Castle! 🏰 It was wild, windy but the sunrise was stunning once the sun lifted over clouds at the horizon. This place combines the beauty of nature and intertwines historic charm. Theres something about the ‘Sea Cauldron’. A spectacular coastal feature created by the erosion of the sea creating a stunning natural arch. Also came here to check if the puffins are back nesting in the 200ft cliffs. After spending the winter bobbing around in sea. But i didn’t have any luck. Hopefully we will see them in the next couple of weeks and I won’t be kept huffing and puffin for two long! Can you believe that the Outer Hebridean islands are home to the densest population of the Golden Eagles in Scotland. Around 90 breeding pairs inhabit the islands making up for over 20% in the country. The vast and undisturbed landscapes of the Outer Hebrides, combined with the absence of competing predators like foxes, create an ideal habitat for the thriving population. Making them the top dogs on the Scottish food chain! If you are lucky enough to spot one soaring the skies you will be able to appreciate their sheer size and if you are even luckier you may see their incredible hunting skills. Preying on wildlife including rabbits, mountain hares, foxes, young deer, and large birds like grouse. Let’s dive into our thrilling journey to the Isle of Jura! Packed with more drama than last weekend’s Scotland v Wales rugby match. Stepping foot on Jura, it immediately became clear why the Vikings named it “deer island.” With 6,000 red deer on the island, they were practically everywhere - even taking a dip in the sea at night! Our first stopthough was the village of Craighouse, where we picked up a fine bottle of 18-year-old whisky from @jurawhisky and indulged in a delicious venison stew at the @jurahotel . The locals welcomed us warmly, inviting us to their Burns Supper and even mapping our route to the Corryvreckan whirlpool the next morning. The following day was an adventure of its own. Our 22km trek, passing by Barnhill where George Orwell penned “1984,” led us through wild, remote wilderness with deer as our only companions for miles. The final stretch of ‘path’ to Corryvreckan, the cauldron of the speckled seas was extremely boggy adding to the anticipation. Although we didn’t catch much of a glimpse of Corryvreckan’s turbulence, as it’s best seen during spring tide, it was still a belter of a day. Reality hit us hard as soon as we returned to the car. We received news that our ferry for the next day had been cancelled and rescheduled due to an incoming storm. So, without hesitation, we made a beeline for the rocky ferry home! Jura is also home to the magnificent Paps of Jura, including Beinn an Oir, the Mountain of Gold. And with an abundance of wildlife like otters, sea eagles, hen harriers and short eared owls, there’s never a dull moment on this mesmerising island.

Today, we conquered the breathtaking Sron A’ Chlachain, interestingly known as “the peak that resembles a nose above the village.” This hike is perfect for thrill-seekers craving a heart-pumping challenge within a shorter timeframe. The path ascends quickly, revealing increasingly mesmerising views of Loch Tay and the charming village of Killin. After absorbing the panoramic summit, return to the centre of Killin and venture to the ancient bridge for a captivating view of the Falls of Dochart, gracefully running through the heart of the village. Observe the Scots Pine trees dotted around you and once you have done a full 180 degree turn you will catch sight of Innis Bhuidhe (“the yellow island”). Go check this out! To do this, make your way to the Bridge End Mill, secure the key, and unlock the secrets of the ancient burial ground of the MacNab clan. When you know the clans logo is a severed head of a member of the rival Neish clan you know your in for a treat. In here two Iron Age forts were also discovered. Before returning the key. Cap off your day with some salmon at the Falls of Dochart Smokehouse. If time permits, venture to Finlarig Castle, the ancestral home of the Campbells of Breadalbane. Explore Fingals Stone, Tomnadashan Mine, the Crannog Centre, or embark on an even more challenging hike up Ben Lawers for an extended adventure. A small village packing a big punch!

So many perspectives of Tobermory in one day. This is true Scottish weather for you! One moment sunnier than Barbados, the next a snow storm 😂 What a day out in Mull it was though! Definitely didn’t go to plan but we adapt and conquer. I rose early for the 5.15am ferry so arrived in Craignure just after 6am and headed for the ferry for Iona. 27 of the 33 miles on the way there and it was a white out. Zero visibility and a hell of a lot of snow. Road completely white, I turned back and headed for Tobermory. It really is a stunning little place and I was greeted with blue skies and a very settled sea. So after a quick wander and scranning down my leftover chinese I got the kayak out. Paddled out to a waterfall on the coast and got a unique perspective of the pier! With some time to spare I went for the Tobermory distillery tour which was class! Unfortunately had to save the drams for later as I had to fire back for the ferry to oban. Recently I’ve done a lot of research into the Canongate which is the furthest east of the five streets that make up the Royal Mile. The Canongate from around 1128 until 1856 had its own burgh and was technically a completely separate town, separated by its own boundaries. The people of the Canongate lived in a very tight knit community. So much so that when the Tolbooth jail first opened prisoners with minor offences were given the key. So if they didn’t appear or left early then everyone in the town would know about it and more than likely would face more severe punishment. There were no secrets in this medieval town. Those that required further punishment were dealt with by the Burgh officers. Much punishment that they gave in effect was because of public disapproval against things like slander, verbal abuse, fighting and stealing. Methods of punishment started at public humiliation by putting them on the pillory. Watchers would often throw rotten food, mud, offal and animal feces, nailing the ear to the tron or the girth cross where the maiden was used to chop off the head of Jean Livingstone. As the tale goes Jean Livingston, daughter to the Laird of Dunipace had received one too many beatings from her husband. She once again called for her nurse to get help with the wounds. Whilst receiving treatment from her worried nurse she explained the full story of how she was often beaten by her aggressive husband John Kincaid of Warriston. The nurse was mortified and together they plotted a plan. On the 2nd July 1600 Robert Weir, a servant of her father, battered her husband to death. Robert Weir snitching on where he got the orders from. Caused both the nurse and Lady Warriston to be arrested and convicted of the murder of her husband, John Kincaid. The nurse was taken up to Castlehill and at 4am was burned at stake like a witch and at the same time Lady Warriston was beheaded by the “Maiden” (early type of guillotine) at the Girth Cross at the foot of the Canongate.

Definitely NOT a road you want to be driving in winter. This is Bealach Na Ba, an iconic mountain pass which is by far the most exhilarating road in the country. The ‘Pass of Cattle’ is known for its single track, winding road with hairpin corners and is surrounded by majestic landscapes. When you finally reach the top, you are rewarded with incredible views over the beautiful, rugged coastline and the Cuillin mountains of Skye. There is a car park at the top so pull in. Jump out the car. Pause. Take a deep breath and take it in. Wow! Although this isn’t for the faint hearted if you are searching for a thrilling drive, then this is a must-visit spot and if you drive past Ardarroch on your way be sure to make Kishorn Seafood Bar part of your journey.
