MUNRO BAGGING 101 with @girlsonhillsuk I’ve been hiking/mountaineering/hill walking for roughly 14 years now 🥾 During this time I’ve had some amazing days on the hills from my first Munro which was the Sgùrr Dearg (In Pinn) on Skye 🤯to ice climbing up Green Gully on Ben Nevis. But I’ve always relied on someone else or the safety of a group like @moray_mc to lead the way. Turning 40 last year made me rethink a lot of things and taking responsibility for my safety on the hills was one of them. So, I decided to book onto the Munro bagging safety course in Glencoe with @girlsonhillsuk ⛰️ On day 1 we met with the course leaders @runclimbswim Hannah and Emma who were so knowledgeable and friendly. We spent the morning at Glencoe Lochan learning about map reading, pacing and taking bearings with the compass 🧭 If you’ve not been to the Lochan I’d recommend it, such a beautiful spot! In the afternoon we headed up to the Devil’s staircase and took it in turns to calculate timings and bearings whilst identifying key features on the map 🗺️ We lucked out with the weather and the sun shone all day ☀️. We also lucked out with our group🥰 Such an amazing bunch of inspirational ladies with so many awesome stories and tips to share. After a jam packed day @debs.reid and I headed to @clachaig_inn for some dinner and AF beers 🍻. The Torridon Mountains Majestic mountain paradise for hikers, climbers, geologists and nature lovers. The mountains of Torridon contain some of the most spectacular scenery in Scotland. They are made from ancient Lewisian Gneiss rocks, over 2 billion years old, with the youthful Cambrian quartzites topping the peaks and sandwiching the massive layer of Torridonian rocks that make up the bulk of the landscape. These are composed of a mix of reddish sandstones, conglomerates and mud stones, deposited around 700 million years ago in massive rivers and lake. Zig Zags Scramble Glencoe. 😁🔆👌 You may have noticed, and some have asked, that we’ve not been out as much as we used to be. The truth is we’ve had a bit of a time of it! However, we believe we really have turned a corner, together! I’ve done a new video and edited slightly differently from our normal offering. I let MrsO see it before uploading and she thinks, like me, that even the smallest amount of awareness of the menopause is a very valuable thing. Me, I think if us lads knew more about it life would be very much easier and make way more sense if we just knew what was going on. The minute I informed myself, it all started to get slightly more manageable. If you follow us you’ll know how much of a big step doing this route is for Lisa. We thought she’d developed a huge fear of heights! What we were actually experiencing was anxiety brought on by the menopause which had been sneaking up on us for a number of years! And I mean proper stealth, ninja style! 🥷 For the lads, this is very unsettling, especially when you don’t understand what the menopause can do to the ladies. For the ladies, this is life challenging and changing. We’ve had some big ups and downs recently which unfortunately came to a head. However, once we knew what was going on. We began to fix it! All credit to this amazing woman for the steps she took, steps which were very tough for her. A very independent and normally resilient woman eventually that needed a little helping hand. One that wasn’t mine! 🎥 Our latest little adventure film is dedicated to MrsO and all the other ladies that are working through the menopause. A little help and understanding goes a long way!! On the way to Bidein a’ Chabair from Glen Dessarry. Last time I was up this Corbett, which is in the remote and wild lands between Loch Nevis and Loch Morar, I scrambled over the summit without giving much mind to the difficulties. That was many years ago and how times have changed - i approach such obstacles with much more trepidation and, if I’m being honest, nervousness. Higher up it has some fine ridges and is a great viewpoint. Ben Starav is a tough ascent by any standards, but the route can be extended by the very fit. Cruach Àrdrain is arguably one of the greatest mountains in the Southern Highlands and the ascent from Crianlarich via horseshoe circuit must be the finest way!! Walk Highlands does not have a walk description for the horseshoe circuit and their route starts from Inverlochlarig but that’s not accessible by public transport. The first time I did this route we had no GPX file so had to figure out how to reach the mountain. We ran into issues near the end due to the large forest in front of Crianlarich. Fortunately, I managed to find a GPX file this time but I had minor issues with the forest again. I ascended via Grey Height ridge as it’s quicker and easier to reach the top. I dropped my bag and swiftly went over to the other Munro then re-ascended Cruach Àrdrain, so fortunate enough to have 2 visits to the summit. Cruach Àrdrain looked unclimbable and I’m amazed I managed to get down it (first picture)!! Perhaps that’s one reason why Walk Highlands does not have a walk description as the horseshoe circuit includes this extremely steep ascent/descent. After the hike I still had a couple hrs wait for bus so took refuge in a pub in Crianlarich for a well-deserved couple pints. 121 Navigation & ML rope work Really fun afternoon evening with Lisa who is prepping for ML assessment. The plan was to build confidence in her navigation & tweak were required including some night nav. Plus a run through of the ML rope work (confidence roping, abseiling & and anchor setups / belaying). Starting with basics and building the nav up we looked at loads of contour interpretation and then including more strategy before (eventually) it got dark! A few legs in the dark made for good interest, looking for contour features and discussing any issues as we went along (invisible streams mostly!) 😀 We also found some good rock to play with ropes on and looked at checking anchors, positioning of yourself, rope & client depending on scenario & belaying on both sides (L&R) before doing some confidence roping in some steeper ground and getting that rope guitar string tight & positioning of yourself in relation to client. All in all and a solid hill session and loads of laughs (as we tried not to fall over for the 100th time in the Heather and tiny streams!) Ben alder 6 munros plus the 5 Munro tops - 3 of them being massive detours 40 miles - 2736m ascent What should have taken us 13 hours, ended up taking us 17 and a half after andy slipped and tore his quad muscle. The steep unforgiving pull up the side of alder killed off his leg, and he literally hobbled round the last 2 munros. Going downhill was a massive struggle but we got there slowly getting back to the van at 12:40am. This is the exact reason we carry headtorches all year round and not just in winter. I think most people would have called for mountain rescue - being so far away from any road, but we just walked/hobbled at a slow pace back to the bikes for the cycle out. After what looked like the weather had a different idea for us. Myself Dad and a couple members from the Upperward Mountaineering Club headed up Beinn Bhuidhe yesterday. Drizzle and clag for most of the way before reaching the bealach at 850m to get a glimpse of what we would get at the summit.
