✨️First book review✨️ ❁ This review is long overdue - school and work have been keeping me busy but I finally got the chance to put together a post ~ ⛩️ The Red Palace by @junehwrites ⛩️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 ❁ This book popped up on my fyp before I even started this account and upon reading the description "reads like a historical kdrama" I immediately rushed to the library to borrow it ^^ ❁ The Red Palace definitely surpassed expectations, as it contains some of my favorite things all rolled into one: historical fiction (specifically korean historical fiction), mystery, a bit of romance, strong female lead, captivating storyline 🔎💞 ❁ Some favs: - Eojin: omg the way this character is so masterfully created and embodies the term "written by a woman" 🥹🫶 - Jieun: a romantic at heart, this character's attemps to ship her best friend and cousin add a much-welcomed lightness in the midst of the more serious murder-mystery plot the story is centered around 💖💘 - Depiction of complex relationship dynamics: a recurring theme i noticed throughout the novel is complex parent-child relationships between Hyeon and her aristocrat father, Hyeon and her seemingly neglectful mother, as well as the Crown Prince and his father. The mystery part had my attention and it was fun to "solve" it along with Hyeon (FMC) 🕵🏻♀️ • I freaking loved the romance..🙈 But the reason why it wasn't 5 stars for me was because of the romance!😭 I WANT MORE! I NEED MORE! It just wasn't enough..😢 Eojin & Hyeon were so cute together! • Overall, it was refreshing to read a book that read like a historical kdrama which is my FAVORITE. AOTD: I don’t read/watch a ton of mysteries or thrillers but I do like a good psychological or historical mystery. ~ “Palace secrets must never get out, or else inevitably there will be blood.” BOOK REVIEW: The Red Palace by June Hur -A historical romance + mystery set in 1750s Korea, inspired by the real life Crown Prince Sado (If you want more info on him, June Hur has been posting reels about his life based on the accounts of his wife) ~ I really enjoyed Eojin + Hyeon as an investigating duo and their romance too. I believe all of Hur’s books have been standalone, but I wouldn’t mind reading another mystery with this investigative duo! I also loved the more emotional aspects of the book, especially as Hyeon’s relationship with her family evolves, and she grapples with the idea of being acceptable and worthy of love. The only thing I wasn’t a huge fan of was how the real murderer was revealed, as it felt kind of rushed. Otherwise, it was a gripping story that was hard to put down! ~ If you enjoy high stakes mysteries, a sweet slow burn romance, and a clear sense of time and setting, The Red Palace is for you! If enemies to lovers and forbidden romance are more your speed, Hur’s 2024 mystery A CRANE AMONG WOLVES has those elements!
