🦌Is Mother Dead van Vigdis Hjorth (vert. door Charlotte Barslund) is niet het zoveelste moederboek. Toegegeven, ik heb een zwak voor moederboeken en verhalen over dysfunctionele families. Als de verteller dan nog eens onbetrouwbaar, unlikeable en moreel twijfelachtig is, dan heb je me mee. 🌳 Deze roman is een obsessieve smeekbede van een zestigjarig kind dat erkenning zoekt bij haar moeder. Initieel lijkt het enkel om repetitieve en dwangmatige gedachten te gaan, maar hoe vaker Johanna wordt afgewezen, hoe drastischer haar gedrag wordt. Ze wil haar moeder kennen, begrijpen, haar pijn doorvoelen. Dit is geen eenduidig verhaal van goed of kwaad, maar rommelig, lichamelijk en claustrofobisch. 🩷 Ik heb ontzettend veel onderlijnd en passages aangeduid. Hjorth weet hoe ze onder je vel kan kruipen en daar blijven. Ik denk niet dat Is Mother Dead voor iedereen is, maar als je van "unhinged women" houdt, dan kan ik niet anders dan het aan te raden.
