I met a marathon runner the other day who was in the clinic getting treatment for what she thought might be a torn Achilles tendon.⁠ ⁠ She had completed a race over the weekend and ended up running half of it in excruciating pain because of her injury. ⁠ ⁠ It turned out that she didn't have a torn Achilles tendon at all.⁠ ⁠ Her ankle had just locked up because the muscles surrounding the joint were too weak to endure the punishment of that particular race. ⁠ ⁠ As she was getting treatment, she casually mentioned that her training only involves running because lifting weights "makes you bulky and slower"⁠ ⁠ Yet here she was complaining about how countless injuries were preventing her from reaching her marathon running goals. injuries that would almost certainly get better if she were to lift weight and make those weak muscles strong. ⁠ ⁠ For a second, I felt a little high and mighty about the whole thing. ⁠ ⁠ But then I remembered that I used to avoid doing cardio because I thought it would make my muscles weaker and smaller...⁠ ⁠ And that, my friend, is just as ridiculous a thought process as the one she has about strength training.⁠ ⁠ Unfortunately, a lot of people in the fitness community still think that lifting weights and cardio go together like oil and water. ⁠ ⁠ in reality, they go together like peanut butter and jelly. ⁠ ⁠ They're pretty good on their own. @trainwithmorpheus has completely changed the way I workout. The system measures your HRV, recommends weekly target zones to focus on recovery. Here are some things that changed since using it: - I perform cardio 3x/week rather than 1x. I focus on 2 sessions of zone 2 and 1 session of more conditioning with zone 5 - I’ve decreased my fat percentage with the increase in cardio as I continue to strength train - I focus a lot more on recovery throughout the day. That means more steps, better quality nutrition, and better sleep - I think less about what I have to do at the gym. This process is gamified so it makes it fun. I also spend less time in the gym - I can habit stack on my zone 2 days (walk on incline). In the pic above I’m able to get through books more easily. Sometimes I’ll listen to a podcast. Will be talking more about it on next week’s @medredefined episode!
