The first one was practically blood and gore less, but this one is the opposite. A horror sequel about a girl who was in a car that killed someone the summer before and was then terrorized by a fisherman who has resurfaced to finish what he started and also kill a bunch of innocent people. This movie asks the viewer to do a lot of work. It asks us to care about a privileged girl who helped cover up manslaughter. It asks us to care about other people who are stupid, assholes, or stupid assholes. It asks us to watch uncritically without a question in our pretty little heads. It also relies heavily on us being bad at geography which, to be fair, in America we mostly are. Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character, Julie, has become insufferable, having daily EPIC freakouts, being cryptic, and being willfully obtuse about boys. Meanwhile, FPJ’s character has matured and turned down the volume on his douchebaggery. Brandy joins the cast and is quite delightful while her boyfriend, played by Mekhi Phifer, is a massive piece of garbage who has never heard of consent because it’s 1998. The first two people to die are black and the black porter is also a voodoo priest and that is just a taste of the racism in this film. Jack Black delivers maybe his cringiest performance ever, complete with dreads and an accent. Most of the movie takes place at an island resort and it has big Saved By the Bell: Hawaiian Style vibes. There are a couple of scenes that call back to the first movie to the point of being nearly identical. There are still some good jump scares and fun deaths. Stupid, but in a funny way and still entertaining. If IKWYDLS is popcorn, this is Jujubees. Also, the beautiful and talented Elizabeth Peña is in it. And remember folks: When naming sequels, try to make them sound like SNL parodies. THE STORY : Ex- soldier and drifter Michael "Duffy" Duffield (Grillo) reluctantly finds himself teaming up with ex-con Max Bomer (Phifer) to take part in underground fighting that pits them up against a crime boss and two corrupt cops that will stop at nothing to exploit them, sending Duffy on a personal mission to save Max and his family. THE REVIEW : This is another top-tier action movie from director Christian Sesma (The Night Crew, Section Eight) that perfectly utilises Frank Grillo's skills on screen to give him another great role as a PTSD suffering soldier who get's drawn into underground fighting but then uses his special skills to help save a friend in need. What also makes this action movie great is its cast alongside Grillo. Mekhi Phifer takes on the sidekick role to aid Grillo, Jaime King, and Paul Sloan are the corrupt cops who you loathe throughout, and Dermot Mulroney is the slimy crime boss and fight promoter and when you throw in a great cameo by action star of the moment Scott Adkins as Grillo's war buddy and fight machine conveniently nicknamed "The Reaper " then what you have here is a fast paced 90 minute action film that does not outstay it's welcome , gives us plenty of fight action and bullet riddled mayhem , makes great use of all it's star names and gives Grillo his best leading role since my all time favourite movie of his Boss Level. Lights Out is a great and fun action movie that harks back to those glorious DTV days of the 90s. A top cast brings you top action, and that's all any action fan could ask for from Christian Sesma, a director that get's better and better with each film he makes and Chad Law an action writer that always brings the goods.
