Back to school after 3 weeks off for drs appointments and vacation. We feel refreshed and ready to learn again. We usually go all summer, since it’s too hot and usually rainy as well. So a nice vacation before the summer crowds was perfect. #homeschool #homesweethomeschool #neurodivergentlearning #art #teachingautism #homeschooling #secularhomeschool #ecletichomeschool

✍️🇬🇧🗨️ We have two English workshops in store for you this week! Looking to write your first big paper? Then Jillian has got you covered. From finding a topic, to researching approaches, down to the final outline, you will discuss everything you need to know to successfully write your thesis. And afterward Alessia is giving a workshop on Writing Routines to make sure you have all the tools not just to plan out your first paper but also to keep working on it for longer periods of time and get it done without last-minute stress. #lmumunich #lmumuenchen #lmu #lmuschreibzentrum #schreibzentrum #writing #writingcenter #unilife #studentlife #studihilfejetzt #keepcalmandkeepwriting #academicwriting #writinghelp #Schreibhilfe #schreibworkshop #schreiben #schreibenlernen #aiprompts #neurodivergentlearning #neurodivergent #thesiswriting

Answer this questionnaire to find out your learning style https://trainingcoursematerial.com/free-assessment-tools/vak-learning-styles-questionnaire-quiz Are you auditory visual or kinaesthetic? I am mostly kinesthetic which means I learn by doing and experiencing, I am a feeler. Kinaesthetic learners only make up 5% of the population also I’m slightly visual I see everything in pictures and create images in my head most of the time which is also common for neurodivergent people. Finding out what kind of learner you are can be hugely beneficial in understanding yourself and your inner workings. In school or in the workplace knowing your learning style can help you to develop confidence your communication and progression. Learning styles vary for everyone, as each person is unique. That's why it's important to make sure everyone feels included in education. In Canada, there are 600,000 adults who learn differently, known as neurodivergent. Unfortunately, most educational approaches don't take this into account. To learn more about what it means to be neurodivergent and get some tips on how to help adults who learn this way, read this article from @abclifeliteracy: https://abclifeliteracy.ca/blog-posts/5-tips-for-working-with-neurodivergent-adult-learners/ #neurodivergentlearning #abclifeliteracycanada

Every parent wishes there was a guidebook to navigating the nuances of teenage relationships. For many girls with autism, life after puberty is challenging. Of course the same could be said of girls who are not on the spectrum. As girls with autism enter their teenage years, many struggle to keep up with the elaborate rules of social relationships, making them susceptible to higher rates of anxiety and depression. For many women and girls, communicating with others about relationships, clothing, career goals, and other things of interest is key for social engagement. This may not be true for women and girls on the spectrum, as socializing can feel exhausting and overwhelming. So, women and girls with autism that struggle socially often become isolated. So, providing women and girls with autism opportunities to learn and practice social skills early and often can be the key to helping them THRIVE socially throughout the various stages of life! #thrivewithartie #thriveabovethespectrum #neurodiversity #neurodivergent #neurodivergentlearning #assistivetechnology #supportivetechnology #autismresearch #autismawarness #autismtransition #autismtransitionplanning #autismdiagnosis #autismtransitionservices #autismisajourney #autismspectrum #technology #innovation #personalizedlearning #diversity #equity #inclusion #jobskills #jobtraining #autismstatistics #autismfacts #employment #unemployment #autismfriendlyworkplace

With April comes World Autism Month, a time to recognize both the importance and collective benefit of an inclusive classroom environment. ⭐️ As part of our Anti-Bias Curriculum, we help give children the tools to express and embrace their own differences and the unique identities of others. Through books, art, music, and meeting and mealtime discussions, children are exposed to identities that both reflect themselves and provide a window into the identities of others.

There are so many issues with the school system, but the bottom line is that it is failing our neurodivergent young people. And I'd argue, at the moment, ALL our young people, but that's a blog for another day. This morning I had a really lovely chat with an ND young person who struggled with school. They were top in the class for the subjects they loved, yet refused access to higher graded papers because they were not achieving as well elsewhere. They COULD have gone on to study physics to a very VERY high level - but the system wouldn't allow it. Instead, they were told they were not good enough, couldn't focus in the 'right' way, and would do so much more with their lives if they could just CONFORM better. This is why I left mainstream education. As time went on, the limitations placed on me were preventing me from meeting my students needs and ensuring that they had autonomy over their learning. They had none, and it broke my heart watching the system try to squish kids into boxes in the name of progress and academic achievement. This young person, thankfully, landed on their feet. They have a really beautiful group of affirming humans around them, and have found a way to excel in another area of interest. But that's often not the case. This is what drives me to write THE THING - I want to change this narrative, and provide our young people with access to education in a way that suits them. WHATEVER that means to them. Completely self-directed, fully autonomy, and always neurodivergent affirming. I can't wait to show you. 💛 #selfdirectedlearning #unschooling #neurodivergentaffirming #neurodivergent #autisticlearning #neurodivergentlearning #selfexploration #progressiveeducation #educator #failingschools

This week in Kindergarten + some reflections 🫶🏻 We are celebrating a sixth birthday for Aiden in a few days, and as with any mom nearing her child’s birthday, I’m feeling nostalgic and emotional. Leading up to this weekend, I have been thinking about how birthdays look different for my autistic child. How each year has had its own journey, its own dependence of and praise to God. I used to mourn in the sense of hardships he has faced, and the layers and layers we have unpeeled during his first six years. Battles kept quiet except as whispers to my Lord. Tonight I’m thinking of his smile when he creates. His laugh when he tells a joke. The way his eyes widen with delight when a favorite snack is presented to him. I’m reflecting on his first words, his first I love you to me late one night a few years ago. His passions, his kindness, his protective nature, his incredible imagination. I don’t mourn what the world and experts continuously tell me need change. I rejoice that we are here, doing this learning thing together…at this table and in life. What an absolute privilege it is to be his mommy, to be his partner in every day adventures and thrills, and to sit beside him and learn from him as I’m planning lessons to do the latter. We are having so much fun, and it’s not lost on me what a genuine blessing this is. 📚♥️

I feel like parents of neurodivergent children can relate to this! As a passionate Montessori teacher and parent this has always been my belief. Children don't only learn at school Children don't only learn from books Children don't only learn from apps Children don't only learn from teachers Children don't learn when they're stressed Children don't learn when they feel unsafe Children learn by ✅ doing ✅ exploring ✅ creating ✅ making ✅ gaming ✅ observing ✅ interest ✅ resting ✅ Inside ✅ Outside ✅ Practise Let them show you how they learn and then give them an opportunity to practise. Step back, watch and admire. Try not to stress. For the mommas with a wild child who needs a non-traditional way to review sounds, words, and numbers…here are some of the things we did last week! * side walk chalk * 1) I said a sound, and he wrote the letter that sound made 2) I wrote several CVC words — short vowel u was our focus — and he jumped from word to word as he read it. You could also add a time element to work on proficiency and speed. 3) Write out math problems and let them solve with chalk — because chalk is always more fun than a pencil. In our case, his fine motor skills are behind, and writing with a pencil makes it harder for him to focus on the math. We have a separate time for handwriting, but when we are doing math, I want math to be the focus. *Stepping Fish* He never tires of words on the fish and stepping as he says each word. On this day, I placed extra words on the floor, so he was stepping down to the floor and back up as well, not just fish to fish. *Hammer Time* I said the word, and he got smack it. This may have been his favorite. #makelearningfun #neurodivergent #neurodivergentlearners #neurodivergentlearning #mathwithchalk #CVCwords #learningwhileplaying #learningwhilehavingfun #homeschool #homeschoolfun #homeschoollearning #homeschoolingneurodivergentkids

👋 Hi! I thought I'd introduce myself here... swipe through to read my story! 🩰 I was a professional ballet dancer for many years. Transitioning away from the stage was no easy feat! I loved dancing, but when it was time to put the pointe shoes away... 📚 I knew I wanted to dive head first into higher education. You see, most professional ballet dancers land their first gig just out of high school... 🎓 So when I went for my BA at Columbia University, I was a non-traditional student going back to the books after years of performing... 👩🏻‍🏫 And though I loved writing (my major was Creative Writing!), I started getting really interested in child development and psychology. This interest came from teaching kiddos ballet, creative movement, and yoga throughout my BA... 🧠 Alas, I found School Psychology! Now I'm an NCSP (nationally certified school psychologist) and work in a private school where all students have IEPs. Most of my students have intellectual or developmental disabilities, and they are amazing individuals! ✨ What's your journey to the classroom or the psychology field? Comment below!

📝 When I was a kid we moved from Victoria to South Australia for a year or two. One of my teachers said of my handwriting “What is that, copperplate?!” His comment stuck with me (I wasn’t his favourite student. He told me my art would get me nowhere, so he was generally a poop teacher. Suck it, Mr McCarthy.) BACK ON TRACK: Not that I had a problem with my handwriting. Perfecting it was a point of pride for me, to the point where I decided in high school that I needed old-school pre-press graphic-designer-handwriting, so would write all of my school notes in pencil and generally in capitals to have the ✨perfect✨ handwriting. (Now I realise that neurodivergence oozed from my pores. I love discovering these things about young me through an ND lens!)

Looking at what Victoria expects children to use to learn to write in 2024 feels… superfluous. Flourishes intended to encourage speed and the desire to hold on to cursive handwriting seems… unnecessary.

I’m opting away from the Victorian option, despite my automatic leaning to think everything Victorian MUST be better, for the Tasmanian Beginners Alphabet, which is closer to my ‘natural’ (relaxed ✨designer✨ 😂) handwriting (will be more organic to write) and, I feel, in my uneducated opinion, will appeal to Jack the most. I get the impression that the more ✨flourish✨ each letter contains, the bigger the hurdle to mark make again. I’ll have to chat with the OT when we return to sessions to see if my theory is correct! ♥️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🩷 #suckitmrmccarthy #victorianmoderncursive #tasmanianhandwritingguidelines #superfluousflourish #neurodivergentlearning #neurodivergenthomeschool #neurodivergenteducation

Arthur Read stopping by, telling you to read the books with difficult conversations 😀 Last year, I learned the last episode was out, so I found it on YouTube. I then found new episodes about things like chronic illness, bullying, natural disasters, religion, disabilities, & gay marriage. It made me recognize the show as a social emotional learning tool. The start to my fascination with human behavior. I recall telling my mom the stories as a kid, bombarding her w questions about why a character said or felt something. I recall daydreaming stories of interacting with the characters. Recently at Kohl's, I saw this toy for $5 & smile when I see him embracing my books. Ps- anyone how to access the episode w the Sikh character for free? #ArthurTVShow #MarcBrown #childhoodtv #PBSKids #SocialEmotionalLearning #neurodivergentauthor #kohlscares #arthurread #neurodivergence #neurodivergentlearning #MentalHealthBook #AuthorsofInstagram #southasianauthor #DesiAmerican

I know that plenty of parents choose not to share their child’s diagnosis with them. They don’t want them to feel ‘different’ or have their neurodivergent brain ‘hold them back’. The truth is, though, we often know that we are different. And even if we are not inherently aware, our peers usually let us know. And they don’t do it kindly. We end up with tons of questions about ourselves, about our value. If our parents don’t answer them, we’ll come up with answers ourselves. And there’s a good chance they will be incorrect, harmful, and devastating. Withholding a diagnosis from us, even if coming from a place of love, is doing us no favours. In fact, it often creates really, really big issues for us. Because we try as hard as we can but still can’t work out why things just don’t work for us. And they seem to work for everyone else. If everyone else can do it, why can’t we? The problem must be us? Giving us this important information about ourselves means we can learn who we are. We can learn about our preferences and body cues. We can learn about our social communication style, and sensory processing system. And we can learn to advocate. Most importantly, we learn that we are not broken. Just different. And our existence is not worse. Yes? Em 🌈

We’ve all heard someone jokingly say women are hard to read. Well, this appears to be true when it comes to identifying the early signs of autism. 😲 #DYK Boys are 4x more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls, causing girls to be diagnosed much later in life than boys. 👀 Is it diagnostic bias keeping girls from being diagnosed early? Or, is it because autism presents differently in girls? Do girls inadvertently adopt habits and social norms that lead to a masking of their symptoms? Hopefully, we will learn as autism research continues to evolve. #thrivewithartie #thriveabovethespectrum #neurodiversity #neurodivergent #neurodivergentlearning #assistivetechnology #supportivetechnology #autismresearch #autismawarness #autismtransition #autismtransitionplanning #autismdiagnosis #autismtransitionservices #autismisajourney #autismspectrum #technology #innovation #personalizedlearning #diversity #equity #inclusion #jobskills #jobtraining #autismstatistics #autismfacts #employment #unemployment #autismfriendlyworkplace

One of the travesties of homeschooling is the desire for your child to be ahead of everyone else. After all if this is a superior education, then we need to prove that right? Far to often, I’ve gone in a group looking for advice only to have every child referenced be lauded as “advanced.” When you have neurodivergent children this can be exhausting and soul killing at times. The truth is none of that matters. The only thing that matters is what YOUR child needs. I have a child who writes beautifully, but never spells anything correctly. He can if you ask him, but in the process of writing it gets lost. Another child is a whiz at math yet can’t seem to remember his multiplication tables to save his life. He has all kinds of tricks to help him, but they haven’t stuck yet. One of my children struggles to read, but has amazing comprehension and vocabulary skills. I personally struggle with science. No matter how many times I hear a concept, I never seem to be able to retell it. What does YOUR child need? How does your child learn? It’s okay mama, God’s got this too.

On Monday and for the first time in all my teaching career, I was the one providing September INSET Teacher Training instead of being listening to it. Thank you to all Senior Education Leaders who prioritise Neurodivergent Learning training for teachers. It was fantastic to see the staff engagement and how more teachers are becoming aware and curious, wanting to know more to help young people in educational settings. When we know better, we do better. Knowledge, creativity and compassion go along way in helping the 20% of young people who are Neurodivergent Learners in our classrooms. 5% of them ADHDers. Thank you ADHD Embrace for providing this service to schools. I am back tomorrow for another INSET talk, looking forward to it! #ndbrightbrains #neurodivergentlearning #ADHD #Autism #Dyslexia #inclusiveteaching

Many of our neurodivergent kids have ‘spiky profiles’. This means that their brightest, strongest skills are high- often way above those of other kids their age. Their big skills are BIG. And if you were to compare these big skills to the skills that they struggle the most with, the gap might be quite substantial. Hence the ‘spike’. I’m talking our ND kids working way above grade level at school. Maybe they are brilliant at maths, or writing, or perhaps their verbal communication skills would have you believing that they’re a good five years older than they are. They also struggle with things. Adults often make the mistake of seeing this kid’s brilliant academic skills, and assume that this child should be equally as brilliant in every other aspect of their life. That means executive functioning, ‘social skills’, life skills, daily tasks, emotional regulation, etc. Adults often expect that this kid should be just as great at everything else as they are at maths. When this 7-year-old child struggles with something ‘simple’ like getting dressed, parents might turn around and say things like ‘I just watched you do 5 pages of long division- stop being ridiculous. This is EASY compared to that.’ The thing is, it isn’t. Not for this kid. Maths was simple for them, the way that getting dressed might be simple for you. Conversely, getting dressed is hard for them, the way that maths might be hard for you. We need to meet them where they’re at. We can marvel at their mathematical brilliance, wonder how on earth they can do those complex equations. And then after, we can help them clean up the milk they spilled, and comfort them about the mess. We help them regulate when their feelings are so big about the bits of cereal on the floor, and the drops of milk on their shirt. We work alongside them to pack their bag in the morning. We help them work through the huge sadness of losing a game. We do all that. And we know that we are supporting them where they need the support. And we are are still there, in their corner, when they don’t. Point is, they know that we are there no matter what. That connection and that trust is essential. Em 🌈🌻✌ AuDHD SLP

Imperative language requires a response, such as a command or direct question. This can be challenging for some children, especially if they have a language impairment. Declarative language does not require a response from the other person. The purpose of declarative language is to share information, which then invites the child to engage on their own terms. As educators, it is easy to get into a rhythm of imperative language. We have so many things to do in a day or a week, and it becomes natural to give direct commands or instructions to students. Slowing down to change our speaking style to make it more declarative (and inclusive!) takes time and can feel frustrating. But the results you will see from students will make it totally worth the effort - we promise. How do you define declarative language? What tips do you have for using it in a busy classroom setting? . . . . . . . . #education #educators #continuingeducation #teachers #professors #earlyeducation #childhoodeducation #elementaryeducation #preschoolteacher #elementaryschoolteacher #middleschoolteacher #highschoolteacher#careerdevelopment #professionaldevelopment #neurodivergent #neurodivergentlearning #declarativelanguage #imperativelanguage #language
