We dive in to the science and myths around this condition that affects 1% of children worldwide. The daily challenges in caring for them, the silver linings in being a positive parent and what the future holds for this dedicated father. Mike admits he has learnt infinite amounts from the eyes of his children and how they have changed his outlook on life for the better. Compassion, empathy and understanding are what we need to see how amazing these kids are. If we take time to really understand these special needs, then Mike reminds us that “the simplest things in life can be the most beautiful”.
I never realized how toe walking was injuring my feet and ankles before. Because I tend to walk on the outer part of the front of my feet, I was stretching tendons and ligaments in ways that were damaging them. I now have a ligament that is "loose and frayed," a tendon that is "frayed like a rope," cartilage and connective tissue damage, a bone spur, and a healed bone fracture that I don't even know when it happened. After trying a few other things, the doctor said he doesn't think the injuries are going to improve and that I could choose to have surgery, but I'm not ready to make that decision. For now, I'm going to start wearing an AFO on just my left foot and go from there. For #WorldAutismMonth, several schools hosted Jake's House Flag Raising events and cheque presentations after organizing DIY fundraisers to support our autism community! Chaminade College and Iona Catholic Secondary School both kicked off their celebration with speeches about the importance of supporting the autism community and their connection with Jake's House. For example, Chaminade College has made raising the flag with Jake, our namesake, an annual tradition every April 2nd, World Autism Awareness/Acceptance Day, reflecting a strong bond of support and friendship for the past 20 years. Iona Secondary School's journey with Jake's House is relatively new, yet undeniably impactful. Last year, their dedicated staff organized and hosted a Winter Dance in collaboration with Jake's House, providing a joyous and inclusive environment for over 100 students with exceptionalities. These events truly showcase the power of teamwork and collective effort in making a positive impact. When I swipe through autism reels I see many of my brothers and sisters bringing up comments “autism moms” or “autism dads” arguing what these autism influencers are doing is attention seeking behavior and that their autism isn’t real because of these posts. I must ask does your autistic child not want attention? Or is this about what you are going through as their parents? Here is why I post on Instagram and why my fellow aspies do for most part…. We want join the fight for our place in this world…. We want also speak for our brothers and sisters who have higher needs because according to the DSM book we are on same spectrum as your child… let us speak for our own culture. Autism parents deserve their own platform and support….and I and other influencers for most part are here help you understand better. If you were to adopt a child from China and you wanted that child to know his or her heritage would you turn to a Yale scholar or someone who lives it? That Yale scholar had a bias and misses the little nuances of the Chinese culture. The same principal can we apply to the autism culture but still you gaslight my brothers and sisters… please listen and ask questions. Perhaps even let your autistic children watch these reels so they can see someone like them understand and explain what they are going through, that there is nothing wrong with them a different culture than their parents and that’s OK. The last match.... I was a part of Rocky the Musical at @mtkcofficial, and it has got to be the most positive experience that I had with a cast and crew. I am so thankful that I had nice people to talk to and conversate with and work off of. All the 5-hour rehearsal and fight choreography were all worth it! In fact, I would do it all again just to we live all of the wonderful memories I had with everyone. This musical also made me appreciate Rocky a lot more. I appreciate the art of the original movie and the musical aspects that they added in. I'm very happy about how well this musical went! Until I had an autistic child, I did not really think autistic children played all that differently to neuroypical children. I knew that they prefer to play by themselves. I had no idea that there was a different style of playing that was a commonality amongst many autistic children🧒👦👧 I wanted to re-share this post as I thought it is so important to raise awareness and normalize the way autistic children play. For example, my son loves lining up toys, especially cars. He particularly enjoys spinning objects, such as the wheels of a car or even his ukulele!😂 He will find a part of a toy or any object that can be spun, will spin it and watch it with fascination! This is play for him. This is what brings him 🤩 When we have our vacuum on which is rare because of the loud noise, he will sometimes watch the wheel of the vacuum turn with fascination. When people are expecting me to speak and I can't, it's really stressful and frustrating. It's very helpful when they are patient with me and are open to communicating in another way, like writing. Not everyone is, especially when they think that I SHOULD be speaking. Even people who are capable of speech sometimes, or even most of the time, sometimes rely on other forms of communication at other times. If someone is having a verbal shutdown, trust that they are doing their best and accommodate them in a way that is supportive. I graduated from UC Berkeley in 2020. I had a couple-year long career in case management, harm reduction, therapy, and social work, which was rewarding but drove me into the ground and didn’t give me the time to properly care for myself. I was suffering from autistic burnout (pre-diagnosis) and the problem was worsened by my frustration with my burnout symptoms impacting my ability to “function like normal”. After taking a few months off to move back home and focus on my health, I was diagnosed (at 25 years old) with Autism. My diagnosis made me kinder on myself and more understanding of my challenges in light of the new diagnosis, and after learning to work with (as opposed to against) my brain I am now looking into doing Harm Reduction work (in direct service and policy) and potentially pursuing a PhD in Public Policy. I still don’t “function like normal”, but who the hell wants ‘normal’ anyway ! In this episode, Vas shares about their experiences with substance use, ways society can provide support and direction in harm reduction. Apparently I’m 39 now. Next year I’ll be 40 because that’s how numbers work. Seems a bit high but I like it. In A Different Sort of Normal I said I feel like my age is permanently 12, but it has now gone up to 25 and sometimes 67. A little bit of a different format but let’s go… I feel like there isn’t enough opportunity for autistic people to meet and chat with other autistic people, to ask questions and to share years of lived experience. It feels like a lot of autism is still described and discussed from the outside, from non-autistic people. From a heavily deficit based framework. It feels vital that there is space for the rich internal experience too and for autistic spaces. I know how many of you have found this space helpful in finding your people or in feeling seen, which warms my heart 🫶 I’m also really aware of my limitations these days. I so desperately wish I could answer every question that I get in the comments or in my DMs but I just cannot. If there are themes, I try to address these in posts so that people get answers and support. I’ve seen this narrative a lot this week on social media: the need to explain yourself. Then re-explain yourself. You know, to try and make it better… but you just make it way worse. And I totally agree - I tend to over explain. But what about filling in the blanks when you don’t know what to say next? Those moments where you are just completely and utterly put on the spot. Because I have just as many of those moments myself than I do of over explaining. Let me give you an example. There is a senior center in the same building as my kids homeschool classes. I am often seated just outside in the hallway, between these two areas. Today, I had my noise canceling headphones on. My gimbal was set up to record. I was writing on my iPad. Read: I was very clearly busy. But an elderly woman approached me and asked what it was. I am too polite (pushover) to just ignore her… so I begin to break down what a gimbal is and what I use it for. This is something that is really hard for me to accept about myself. I want to give and help people, and I also sometimes feel obligated to do so to make up for all of the things that people do for me. Today I was diagnosed as #ActuallyAutistic. Naturally my family threw me a happy diagnosis party, with a cake and candle. With it comes huge feelings of relief that I’m not just strange and unusual but neurodiverse. I’m autistic. I feel liberated from the expectations of how I’m meant to be and behave, and instead feel like I can finally be me. The infantile and gendered expectations of what autism looks like have made me doubt whether I could actually be autistic for so long. This diagnosis has taken away years of questioning and self doubt. I feel empathy for my past self who tried so hard to fit into a neurotypical world.
