••• HEALING OUR HURTS ••• 🤼♂️💩🙈💥 You probably all heard the phrase “Hurt people #hurt people”. When i manage to see through other people’s ‘meanness’ towards me, be it #conscious or #unconscious and seeing them as a hurt child, i much faster feel #compassion towards them. Sometimes - and not nearly as often as i’d like to - even right there and then instead of having an afterthought much later on. Besides agreeing with the above phrase, i’m also pondering on how often i experience my hurt parts trying to #compensate for my lack of #grownupness. A big #shadow for me, and perhaps for many of you too is having had been #bullied as a child/adult for any stupid reason. The tendencies i see now within myself and others is that a bullied child can easily become a bully too. Or, one might have #judgmental thoughts of oneself and others. Or both! Another just as big one as bullying for me is having been #rejected or been an #outcaste. Those experiences made me unconsciously push away #help and #compliments, and for a massive chunk of my life to be a #peoplepleaser. And, to reject others at the first instance of feeling rejected by them. 🤦🏼♀️ But hey, i didn’t know what i’ve been doing, and now i’m getting it! 🎊 So, this is where i’m at in this #process, taking time to embrace my bullied and rejected parts. A dear ‘teacher’ of mine, Jessie used to say: “Kaia, you need to trust the process.” I’m trying, each and every day. 🙏✨ Your thoughts, ideas, advices and sharing regarding this post is welcome in the comments or as a DM, as always. Brushte. Paptikutty was born in an era that witnessed the unchecked rise of Namboodiri men to power in Kerala. Anyone or anything besides themselves were considered to be dispensible, sparing only the king. The rigid customs and rules ensured everyone, including Namboodri women were bound to their ways and silenced. The protagonist, a woman of intelligence and beauty, is subjected to injustice in her marital bed that broke her spirits. Instead of being yet another Antharjanam, locked up inside and left to be forgotten, she used her wits to wreack havoc that questioned and weakened the foundation of the community. Centred around a trial for adultery, the arcs highlight caste, gender and religious disparities. One finds it difficult to not see how relevant these issues are to this day, and question our progress as a society. Even though Paptikutty shook the foundations of upper caste male privilege, she became an outcaste - banished from the only life she had every known. Moments like these make the read a bit disturbing, and rightfully so. The treatment of women - irrespective or their caste and creed, the notion that they were dispensible and disposable, left to wither within the quarters of their household is not met with the appropriate repercussions. It is based on the 1905 trial of a Namboodiri woman for adultery and the revenge she exacted on her sixty-four lovers, who belonged to the most powerful families of the land. In the novel, Paptikutty is an avatar of Goddess Kali herself, bringing justice and revolution wherever there is corruption and sin. The Namboodiri Brahmins were the most powerful community in Kerala in the period in which the novel is set, more powerful than the King himself. Here in her hands lay the horoscope of their future days!" . . SYNOPSIS: The Namboodiri Brahmins were the most powerful community in Kerala, more powerful than the King himself. Bound by rigid customs and rules, they silenced everyone who opposed them in their quest for more wealth and power. Namboodiri women were confined to the inner quarters of the house, living in degradation and squalor. Their influence grew unchecked until the end of the 19th century. Outcaste tells of the revenge a single woman wreaks on her community, weakening the Namboodiris from within, for the monstrous injustice done to her. . . In 1905, Kuriyedathu Thatri was put on trial for adultery. She named sixty-four men belonging to the most powerful families of the region as her lovers. All were excommunicated and their trial changed the perception of Antharjanams, Namboodiri women, forever, highlighting their conditions. Modern retellings, for Devika, "cast Thatri as the embodiment of cosmic female energy sweeping away the decadence of the Brahmins." Outcaste shows "the transformation of the Malyali Brahmin community in the 20th Century and the changing nature of women and their agency in [these] traditional communities." Kunhukuttan's depiction of the plight of women from the Namboodiri Brahmin community, and especially Paptikutty (his version of Thatri), is alarming enough but it still feels understated. He takes the real incident, fictionalizes certain aspects of it, and turns it into a cautionary tale about the cost of debauchery and depravity. In his novel, Paptikutty is a sub for Goddess Kali, a self-declared Goddess of Revenge come to cleanse the community of waywardness and complacency—especially the men who had no qualms about exploiting women—and putting an end to regressive practices and customs. . . . .
Dan Naoki (弾 直樹), 1823-1889, was the 13th Danzaemon (弾左衛門), a title attributed to the chieftain of the Eta. The Eta were people who belonged to the Burakumin caste (who descended from the Hinin or non-human group), an hereditary status of untouchability under the caste system of the Tokugawa. They worked as executionners, tanners, butchers, undertakers, etc., occupations considered 'unclean' in Buddhism as associated with defilement (kegare 穢れ). Naoki Dan held leather privileges from the end of the Edo Shogunate. He contributed significantly to the dawn and development of the leather and shoemaking industries. As leather was a military product, the government entrusted everything to him. He set up a factory in Takinogawa, Kita-ku (near Oji Station) in September 1872, but as leather production required large amounts of water, the leather factory was moved to Asakusa, where the Sumida River is located (where the Human Rights Plaza is now) in 1872. Many leather goods-related enterprises, including shoes, gathered around the factory, which became the foundation of the present-day Asakusa shoe industry. (Ref. His forms, nature, symbols, weapons, attendants, and activities are beyond mundane standards of this society. He is Mahakal. He is Parmeswar. As Rudra he is full of wrath and destruction, but as Shiva he is filled with all auspiciousness. He has two natures—one wild and fierce, the other calm and peaceful. He is the friend of the unfortunates, the outcastes, the Chandals and the ghouls. Those who are despised by others find a place in his retinue. Rakshas, Pisach, Pret, and yakshas who are feared by all are his close attendants. Snakes, which are dreaded by people wind themselves lovingly round his neck. His companions are the deformed and the ugly as per social norms ; he is averse to none. He does not belong exclusively to the gods or the sages to pure Or to impure. His greatest devotees include Lord Vishnu, Kubera-the Lord of the yakshas, Ravana, Shukra Dev- The guru of the Asuras. Abhicharis, Vamacharis, Aghoris - all worship him. Every spirit, malefic or compassionate, seeks Shiva’s grace. His attendants are the Ganas, a wild bunch of hooligans and social misfits. As lawless as they are, they can only be controlled by Shiva. Instead of curbing their eccentricities, Shiva joins in their wild revelries and sings and dances with gusto to the accompaniment of their thunderous music. But he also keeps them in check. Because of him they are forced to desist from doing too much damage in the world. Bedecked with skulls and bones, Shiva as Digambar (wearing nothing but the directions) wanders in cremation grounds dancing to the light of funeral pyres, smearing his body with the ashes of the dead. Dangerous forests infested with cannibals and wild beasts, as well as the icy, inaccessible peaks of the Himalayas, are favourite haunts of Mahakal. The unorthodox and the casteless, outside the traditional society, recognize him as nonconformist who sought ultimate truth beyond ritual, beyond society, beyond matter and duality. He co-rules Tantra with his consort Mahakali, and is the first siddha (one with supernormal powers).
