Nice to have a few hours on the rocks last night in search of that first bass of the year but yet again it was very elusive. The wrasse fishing however was pretty good with multiple fish taking a fancy to the @savage_gear_official weedless V2 sandeel. Nothing else took a fish all just the V2 sandeel in a couple of different colours!๐ No monsters with the biggest fish being just over 2lb but all good fun. Just look at that beach - heading west this time on our second walk along the glorious south beach in Tenby to Manorbier, around 9 miles including a coffee and (lush) cake diversion to @bubbleton_farm_shop. Better weather although blowing a hooley with a Met Office yellow wind warning so not the best for walking along the edge of a cliff, but exhilarating! Blue sky, sunshine and clouds of pineapple scented gorse, fields of yellow rape, dainty yet tough little wildflowers, a lane of pungent wild garlic, a sharp shower and the wind lashing us. A totally different walk from our first, with more open scenery and dramatic cliffs, just from heading the other way from Tenby. Scurvy grass (Cochlearia officinalis), also known as spoonwort, is not a grass at all, but a member of the brassica family. Its flavour carries quite a punch, so do try it before picking too much. It is an acquired taste but a great addition to salads and soups. The young flowering tops can be steamed like broccoli and the young seeds are hot and crunchy. Try pickling them. Although this plant can be very common on the coast and salt marshes, it is beginning to โtravelโ inland a little, its seeds being carried along by the movement of cars. It can also be found in hedge banks further from the coast where roads have been gritted and salted during the winter. Scurvy is a nasty disease caused by a diet that lacks vitamin C. It has been recognised since ancient times and cases are still known to occur. Sailors on long voyages suffered greatly but were known to have taken this plant on board with them, some say dried and bound into bundles and some think fresh, but preserved in barrels of salt or as distilled extract.
