Linlithgow Palace in Linlithgow, Scotland ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ Linlithgow Palace is famous for being the birthplace of James V and his daughter, Mary Queen of Scots, but it also has a later historical significance. The Palace was stayed in by both Charles I on his coronation visit in 1633, and Oliver Cromwell in 1650. Somewhat unbelievably, Cromwell even used the neighbouring church, St Michael's, as stables for his cavalry. ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ Later still, the Palace was visited by Bonnie Prince Charlie during the Jacobite Rising of 1745. By 1746, it was the Duke of Cumberland residing at the Palace with an army of 10,000, as they pursued the Jacobites. On the departure of Cumberland's troops from the Palace, a (possibly deliberate) fire broke out, sadly leaving the Palace in such a condition that it was no longer fit to be used as a residence. ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ

Beauly Priory is one of three priories founded in Scotland in about 1230 for monks of the Valliscaulian order. The Valliscaulians came from Val-des-Choux (โValley of the Cabbagesโ) near Dijon in France, and adhered to strict ideals of poverty, chastity and obedience. Beauly, meaning โbeautiful placeโ, must have seemed to the monks a wonderful location in which to devote themselves to worship. And one is an Outlander Film Spot. ๐๏ธ ๐Dunskey Castle ๐ธ 1-7 The magnificent ruins of Dunskey Castle are picturesquely perched on a rocky outcrop jutting out into the Irish Sea, 0.5 miles south of the village of Portpatrick on the south-west coast of Scotland. The massive towerhouse was built in the mid-16th century for the Adairs. By 1700 the whole building was derelict and said to be haunted by a piper where the sounds of his pipes are heard at night. ๐ป ๐Dean Castle ๐ธ 8-9 The sleepy village of Dunure in Ayrshire is where the Outlander team chose their quaint spot on the coast to film scenes in series 3 & 4. Craigend Castle The lands of craigend were part of the Barony of Mugdock in medieval times, but the estate was sold in the mid 17th century to the Smith family. John Smith built a plain house on the estate, but after his death in 1816, his son, James Smith incorporated that house into a much more ornate mansion. Craigend was sold to Sir Andrew Buchanan in 1851. Glasgow businessman, Andrew Wilson and his zoologist son, William, bought part of Craigend estate from the Buchanan family and opened a zoo at Craigend Castle in 1949. It eventually closed in 1955. The sorceress temple ๐ฐ We hadden nog een uurtje de tijd voor we terug naar het vliegveld moesten en alle locaties die ik had uitgezocht waren net te ver rijden. โLaten we kijken wat hier nog in de buurt zitโ, stelde ik voor. Op 9 minuten rijden vonden we deze mysterieuze tempel bovenop een heuvel. ๐ฐ๐ Inmiddels was het wel gaan regenen, maar wandelend naar de tempel toe klaarde het helemaal op. Alsof het zo had moeten zijn! ๐๐ผโจWe hadden net genoeg tijd om wat mooie fotoโs te schieten. En wรกt voor fotoโs! โจAchteraf hebben we opgezocht waar de tempel (zonder enige deur of opening) voor gebouwd is, maar niemand weet het: er wordt vermoed dat de tempel gebouwd is om de vrouw van de landlord te aanbidden, dat er een ziek kind verzorgd werd, of dat dames daar wachtten op hun mannen die aan het jagen waren. Schotland is een en al magisch mysterie, en we love it! ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟโค๏ธ ๐ฌ๐งโจWe had another hour before we had to go back to the airport and all locations I picked out for us were too far away to drive to. โLets check out the areaโ is what I suggested. A car-ride only 9 minutes away we found this mysterious temple on top of a hill. ๐ฐ๐ On our way down there it had started raining, but walking up the hill the sky cleared completely; it felt like this was meant to be! ๐๐ผโจWe had just enough time to shoot some pretty photos, and what kind of photos they turned out to be! We tried finding out what the temple (without any doors) was build for, but nobody seems to know: People suspect it was build to worship the Landlords wife, to nurse a sick child, or for women, waiting for their men to come home while they were out there hunting. By 1700, the whole building was derelict but enough remains to explore, on different levels as well. The Little Things love exploring ... And they love their Auntie Kate, who's also a pug mummy. So I packed my three humans plus The Pugnacious in the car and down to Moray we went. We apparently had an ecclesiastical theme going on, first wandering through the ruins of Spynie Palace, the former seat of the bishops since the early 1200s. Then we made our way to Pluscarden Abbey, where Eleanor was so mesmerised by the abbot, she asked if there were girl-monks as well. Since she does however have a general problem with obedience, I can't really see a career as a nun on the horizon for her ... We always get spoilt at Auntie Kate's, staying in her brand new barn conversion (soon to be found on Airbnb ๐คซ), and how cool is it to have your very own tent in the bedroom?! The ever majestic Dunmore Park. I have been drawn back here several times over the years, but Friday's visit put me so clearly in mind of my first encounter with the place almost 14 years ago. That too was a crisp winter's day, back in December 2008, with the late afternoon sun lowering rapidly as I raced across fields to try and catch the house in the light. This time, in its bicentennial year I realised, I was at the other end of the day, treading those same steps to see the grand ruin illuminated in the early rays from the east. The scale of this place always humbles me; its enfilade of main rooms almost diminutive against the vast expanse of corridors and service range behind. The sun came and went between cloud, playing with the tracery of the windows to suitably dramatic effect. Being north again last week put me in mind of this gaunt baronial beauty I explored back in March, and these pictures I never got round to sharing. The visit was a return 10 years on from my last encounter with the place, spurred on by thoughts of areas I had not previously reached due to the foliage of high summer. I have known its location to be a little sensitive, so will keep it anonymous on the grid. But it is a David Bryce masterpiece in the far reaches of Scotland's north east - his signature Scots Baronial styling in Caithness stone somehow particularly fitting to the flat bleak expanses of land in that corner of Scotland. Returning at the tail end of winter, with the interiors laid bare, my hope was to recreate some shots from a photographic survey of the early 90s which predate the fire that gutted the house. So advanced is the state of ruination however, I was unable to gain the same vantage points to take directly comparative views. The contrast nevertheless remains clear between then and now; the grandeur of high Victorian fittings and the starkness of a fire ravaged shell. It makes a good ruin, but oh what a beauty it was.
I love how the castle blends into the rocks, like it was built into the landscape.
