April balcony update 🤎 Lots of bare roots and dahlia tubers in pots and starting to pop up. My onion sets, beetroot and fennel are ready for the plot, the sweet peas will go next week. That should then leave space to get my tomatoes outside and get them a bit hardier. My autumn sown garlic are looking great, though the spring sown garlic is still nonexistent. I didn't get much gardening done this weekend, but I did manage to separate out a parsley plant and plant out some strawberry plants I'd bought from @cadburygardencentre. I put some horticultural grit around the plants to hopefully deter slugs and for the strawberries to rest on when they've grown, so they don't rot in the soil. You're supposed to use straw, but I don't have any, so this will have to do! Also lovely to see my dahlias coming back. This will be their third year - I'm still so impressed by nature, it really does find a way, because I did nothing with these dahlia pots come autumn! I'm very excited for it to get a bit warmer. My window sills are looking very full! Is it only 10am? I feel I’ve been up for hours! Not a bad night - our little granddaughter only woke up once and was quickly soothed back to sleep. But I do feel a necessary second round of coffee coming on before we head to the garden centre… Isn’t this little set of drawers beautifully painted with vegetables? I spotted it inside a greenhouse at an open garden on The Wirral. Clearly someone with artistic talent looks after that garden. Back home in our own garden we’re currently working on ‘the dog run’ - a fenced and gravelled area outside the back door. It’s home to the bbq and a breakfast table and chairs plus the rotary washing line and my ex-willow-soaking galvanised trough, and the glorious ribes bush I showed on my Stories. The spring bulbs have all gone over in the trough (the tulips didn’t come up this year) so we’re putting herbs in there for the summer. Today couldn’t decide between spring and residual winter chill but I took advantage of that and spent most of it cleaning out my patio and pocket garden, planting vegetables (finding buried vegetables—potatoes) and some pollinator flowers. I fed my citrus trees, added compost, and swept up debris before watering. After a weird wet winter my garden is about 60 percent refreshed. I write about other people’s gardens but can’t seem to follow the rules myself. If my friends Nan, Mim, and Trish saw in person what I do they’d throw up their hands. I rarely start seeds, I over plant, forget to feed and plant mismatched plants together. Sigh. I don’t get the results a more dedicated gardener would but right now I have bees everywhere, enjoying lavender, lime blossoms, blood orange blossoms, and especially naval orange blossoms. After a professional pruning my pomegranate tree has maturing blossoms that look like they’ll stay put. My longtime, long withholding blood orange tree gave me about a dozen oranges over the winter and is now filled with flowers and emerging fruit. I’m used to disappointment, though. All these baby fruit are likely to drop. So I’ll be grateful to get whatever sticks next winter. For now it’s a pleasure to sit in my little garden after showering off dirt and sweat, surrounded by brilliant colors, birdsong, and traveling bees with the sun emerging then disappearing this cool late afternoon. It never fails to provide pleasure. #sundaygardening
We try to avoid using noisy garden machinery on a Sunday, and instead focus on quieter jobs like weeding the native dogwood screen. We planted the hedge in December using bare root whips, and it will take a few years before it reaches optimum height. We chose Common Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) for its year-round visual appeal —with vibrant green leaves during the growing seasons and red leaves and twigs in the autumn/winter. To follow the offseason colour theme, we interspersed the dogwood with European Spindle (Euonymus europaeus) for its pink winter flowers and Guelder Rose (Viburnum opulus) for its autumn red leaves and berries. Native shrubs are a must in our garden to maximise the benefits for wildlife. The garden is starting to show lots of green again which means it survived winter 🤗💚 I’ve got a lot of Echinacea, geums, scabious, saxifrage, penstemons and some other perennials I can’t remember in this corner, and in the middle is my plum tree which is in flower! I’m sure the birds will take all the blueberries before I have a chance to pick them 😂 My husband was a huge help to me today. I don’t know what I would have done without him. He moved so many of my plants about for me. Eek it looks like my peonies are going to flower for the first time 🤞🏻🤞🏻 I planted them three years ago, last year I was worried about them but looks like I needn’t have been. Day 7 of noticing the special in ordinary stuff and trying to capture it in a photo. Backyard Lemons. While weeding my vegetable garden this afternoon, I was noticing that my lemon tree still has lots of fruit and also now has beautiful fragrant flowers starting to bloom. So I decided to see if I could capture that in a photo (and abandoned my weeding!). I wish this was a scratch and sniff because the flowers and fruit are so fragrant together!
