Happy @emilyhenrywrites day to all those who celebrate 🎉 🎉🎉 I’ve been filling my week nights with a lot of derby and skating and writing and even some pickup soccer, which I love, but I can feel that my body and brain are a little burnt out, so I’m pulling back this week in favor of reading at home. Beyond excited to dive into this one! #FunnyStory #TeamPRH

I cannot even describe to you how absolutely breathtaking it was to be surrounded by fields upon fields of tulips. If you're ever in Washington in April, do yourself a favor and visit the Tulip Festival in Skagit Valley. It's also a perfect background for this absolutely stunning Puffin in Bloom edition of Sense and Sensibility, which just so happens to be the first Jane Austen book I ever read. This is one of Erik Larson’s early books, but I finally listened to it and yet another fascinating story. He’s one of those few authors that I enjoy every single book of theirs. He brings about such interesting pieces of history. Always an intriguing story! #TeamPRH⁣ ⁣ ABOUT THE BOOK⁣ A true story of love, murder, and the end of the world’s “great hush.”⁣ ⁣ In Thunderstruck, Erik Larson tells the interwoven stories of two men—Hawley Crippen, a very unlikely murderer, and Guglielmo Marconi, the obsessive creator of a seemingly supernatural means of communication—whose lives intersect during one of the greatest criminal chases of all time.⁣ ⁣ Set in Edwardian London and on the stormy coasts of Cornwall, Cape Cod, and Nova Scotia, Thunderstruck evokes the dynamism of those years when great shipping companies competed to build the biggest, fastest ocean liners; scientific advances dazzled the public with visions of a world transformed; and the rich outdid one another with ostentatious displays of wealth. Against this background, Marconi races against incredible odds and relentless skepticism to perfect his invention: the wireless, a prime catalyst for the emergence of the world we know today. Meanwhile, Crippen, “the kindest of men,” nearly commits the perfect murder.⁣ ⁣ With his unparalleled narrative skills, Erik Larson guides us through a relentlessly suspenseful chase over the waters of the North Atlantic. Along the way, he tells of a sad and tragic love affair that was described on the front pages of newspapers around the world, a chief inspector who found himself strangely sympathetic to the killer and his lover, and a driven and compelling inventor who transformed the way we communicate.⁣ ⁣ #amreading #bookclub #musingsofjamie #nonfiction #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookworms #bookaddict #bookshelf #goodreads #reads #bookaholic #reader

After months of prepping, the @patevangelista event at @_fullybooked happened this afternoon. Congrats to the Fully Booked team for such a well-organized event. And to Pat’s team, for being excellent coordinators. And of course to Pat herself, for telling all these stories, for being extremely hands on with selling her book, and for being such a trooper through all the events she has this month. I like to think that through the work of all these people and with everyone who was there today, who’ve read or are reading the book, who donated books for the #ItuloyangKwento program, we honor the stories of the dead and the loved ones they left behind. First photo is when registration started, next few photos are of the crowd and during Pat’s reading/performance and Q&A with @cesdrilon. People were reading while Pat was reciting for her book. Also took a pic of the amazing Fully Booked team, who planned everything down to every detail and had everything under control. Towards the end, the staff were mostly just waiting for all customers to finish getting their books signed so that they could also finally get their own books signed + take selfies with Pat.😄 The last two photos were from Good Friday, a few weeks ago, when Pat quietly went to Fully Booked BGC to sign 300 books, with the assistance of a few team members who also went to work on Good Friday. Learned that day that Pat loves reading YA and fantasy. (Learned today that she is also a huge fan to Naomi Novik!!!), so the last photo is a snap of her with her armful of YA/fantasy titles as she walked past a table of her own book. Thanks to all who came, to all who went/are going to the other events, and to all the ones organizing the events. We live our lives, read our books, drink our coffee, etc., and all the time, we also hold stories—ours and others. May we not forget the most important ones. #SomePeopleNeedKilling #TeamPRH

Another fall '24 book I'm so excited to talk about with my booksellers (and anyone else who will listen!) Jodi Picoult fans, you are going to LOVE this new book. And those of you who haven't read one of her books (hello, get Mad Honey right now please) I think you are also going to love it. We were told this is the book of her heart that she's always wanted to write and it shows. It's ambitious, weirdly and wildly relevant, and completely absorbing. #teamPRH #byanyothername #fall24books

Look at this pretty new-to-me Pride and Prejudice edition! I have Puffin’s Anne of Green Gables version as well, but I love the pretty design. Also time for a rewatch ;). #TeamPRH⁣ ⁣ ABOUT THE BOOK⁣ Though her sisters are keen on finding men to marry, Elizabeth Bennet would rather wait for someone she loves - certainly not someone like Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, whom she finds to be smug and judgmental, in contrast to the charming George Wickham. But soon Elizabeth learns that her first impressions may not have been correct, and the quiet, genteel Mr. Darcy might be her true love after all.⁣ ⁣ #amreading #bookclub #musingsofjamie #nonfiction #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookworms #bookaddict #bookshelf #goodreads #reads #bookaholic #reader

Four recent picture books perfect for reading aloud, all vetted by my nieces (ages 5 & 3).. 📚”You Are a Raccoon” written by Laurie Ann Thompson, illustrated by Jay Fleck I am a huge fan of this nonfiction series, which features familiar neighborhood animals that kids will recognize (honey bee, Robin, raccoon, and garter snake), tying in opportunities for movement and discussion about each animal. The girls are always excited to mimic the actions of each animal, which is adorable but also a great way to get some energy out. We also had a great conversation about raccoons getting into trash; Elle’s response at the beginning of the to “what do raccoons eat?” was “garbage” but by the time we finished reading she knew that raccoons actually eat worms, bugs, and berries when humans let them have their space! 📚 “Ploof” written & illustrated by Ben Clanton & Andy Chou Musser This interactive read aloud keeps kids giggling, plus there are so many easy cloud crafts to pair! 📚 “Find Momo Everywhere” written and illustrated by Andrew Knapp I think it’s good to say upfront that Momo, who some readers will know from previous seek-and-find adventures featuring him, dies in this book. The text is beautiful and reassuring, but also direct “Momo had died. I missed him. I cried.” My nieces have asked to read this book multiple times now, I think in part because they have older dogs and love looking for Momo in the pictures, but also because their great grandpa recently died and they’re still processing the funeral, burial, and his being gone. I love the book’s message that even though Momo is no longer physically with the author, he can still be found everywhere. And now I’m crying again! 📚 “Turtle-Turtle and the Wide, Wide River” by Jane and Will Hillenbrand Bright and bold illustrations, tons of opportunities for sound effects, and a great story about friendship and self-confidence! And don’t forget to look under the book jacket for a cute surprise. #bookrecs #readalouds #picturebooks #interactivebooks #teamprh

A gripping speculative thriller perfect for fans of Lauren Oliver and Ginny Myers Sain, about one girl with the power to see death before it happens—and the terrible consequences she faces when saving someone goes wrong. . Whitney’s power to see death before it happens is elegantly depicted and gorgeously written. Her struggle with her ability and all that comes with it is fascinating. This book melds the lightly supernatural with a dark mystery and will have readers on the edge of their seats. . Stokes’s book delves into the grief and horror of dealing with a shooting in your community. For today’s teen readers this couldn’t be more relevant—and this story offers catharsis and a safe place to explore and understand the world. #teamprh . . . #ya #yabooks #yanovel #fiction #bookstagram #bookish #thriller #yathriller #booksbooksbooks #newbook #darkmystery

While different from her Cuban sisters series (and a couple of those are high on my list!), I still enjoyed this one. Full of gothic vibes and multiple mysteries, this one was a quick and entertaining read! And side note - I absolutely LOVE this cover. The colors and feel are perfect! #TeamPRH⁣ ⁣ ABOUT THE BOOK⁣ As death stalks a gothic mansion in Miami, the lives of two women intertwine as the past and present collide in New York Times bestselling author Chanel Cleeton’s atmospheric new novel.⁣ ⁣ With the Great War finally behind them, many Americans flock to South Florida with their sights set on making a fortune. When wealthy industrialist Robert Barnes and his wife, Anna, build Marbrisa, a glamorous estate on Biscayne Bay, they become the toast of the newly burgeoning society. Anna and Robert appear to have it all, but in a town like Miami, appearances can be deceiving, and one scandal can change everything.⁣ ⁣ Years later following the tragic death of her parents in Havana, Carmen Acosta journeys to Marbrisa, the grand home of her estranged older sister, Carolina, and her husband, Asher Wyatt. On the surface, the gilded estate looks like paradise, but Carmen quickly learns that nothing at Marbrisa is as it seems. The house has a treacherous legacy, and Carmen’s own life is soon in jeopardy . . . unless she can unravel the secrets buried beneath the mansion’s facade and stop history from repeating itself.⁣ ⁣ #amreading #bookclub #musingsofjamie #fiction #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookworms #bookaddict #bookshelf #goodreads #reads #bookaholic #reader

Pink tree season is my Super Bowl!! 🌸😤 I left my apartment yesterday morning hoping to spot a bunch of pink trees, and while all the cherry blossoms aren’t *quite* here yet, I did find this beautiful magnolia near the Met. Luckily I came fully prepared for book pictures with a new addition to my shelves: the Rifle Paper Co edition of Sense and Sensibility (shoutout to work for the free copy!). I love my RPC copy of Little Women so I had to add to my collection with S&S and Pride and Prejudice! I hope you’re all ready for more pink tree content from me because I will be lugging beautiful books around for the next month in hopes of getting cherry blossom pictures 😂 What’s your favorite season? 🗺️LAST NIGHT IN MONTREAL by Emily St. John Mandel📍 For March’s Read What You Own [in Community] prompt, we had to read a book by a favorite author. So, of course I went with Emily St. John Mandel! I’ve loved and kept up with her books since STATION ELEVEN, so I figured it was time for me to dive into her backlist (all of which I own haha). This novel is a chase and a mystery, following a young man running after a woman he thinks of as his beloved, while she searches for what’s lost in her past. Each of them are trying to find closure and purpose, following beacons in the night that may, or may not, lead to what they think they desire. As an added treat, Mandel talks a lot about linguistics and lost languages, one of my favorite topics! The idea of lost languages is such a beautiful way to discuss the idea of being, even if parts of yourself are lost to you, if that makes sense. Mandel such a smart writer—intellectual and thoughtful yet accessible, all wrapped up in a propulsive story. I love character driven stories that are insular, yet mysterious and compelling. The two novels of Mandel’s I haven’t yet read seem similar in the mystery/noir element, so I’m very excited to pick them up! This is a meandering, lovely story about disappearance, pursuit, and longing, and it’s cool to see how those themes have continued in her later work. #readwhatyouownincommunity #teamprh #bookrecommendations #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #litfic

4/2/2024, 1:46:42 AM

Not AT ALL what I was expecting. This book was a whole lot of crazy, but one of the best things I’ve read this year. “Motherthing” is not really a horror or a ghost story, but rather an incredibly dark and fresh take on motherhood and the human desire to be loved and mothered. Author Ainslie Hogarth’s writing is brilliant and funny—I truly had no idea I could be shocked, disgusted, and laugh all at the same time. The humor in this book balances tragedy, depression, and grief in such a fantastic way. Trigger warnings galore tho! Ralph and Abby Lamb are a happy, married couple until Ralph’s demanding and overly critical mother Laura guilts them into moving in with her because she is feeling unwell. Abby takes this as an opportunity to get to know her mother-in-law-from-hell but that is soon thwarted when Laura commits suicide. After Laura’s death, a rollercoaster of emotions and bizarre events happen as Ralph grapples with the loss of his overbearing and unstable mother. Abby fears she is losing Ralph to his mother’s ghost and to prove her love and devotion she gets herself into the wildest predicaments. Highly recommended, especially if you’re a fan of unhinged women. #bookreview #ainsliehogarth #motherthing #teamprh

Some of my favorite indie bookshops in Ho Chi Minh: 1 - Artbook (@sg_artbook): This is the Dong Khoi branch in District 1, parallel to the popular walking street. They have this lovely wall of Penguin clothbound classics! Wasn’t able to take other pics, but Artbook is great for, well, art books, and super cute quirky merch with original art. I have a few of their alternative movie posters, which I had framed. 2-5: @paperbacks.saigon: This is the branch at @cafe.slow in Thao Dien, which is also where a lot of the expats live. My first time to visit this branch, and as usual, Cafe Slow is all kinds of cool and charming. Paperbacks has a shelf here, as they do in other Cafe Slow branches, of nicely curated English titles—a combination of popular & literary titles, design books, and nonfic graphic novels. (Coffee was amazing, btw, but they were out of croissants from @breadventure, which a friend swears by. Apparently, Breadventure only opens on weekends, but they supply daily croissants to Cafe Slow, which run out very quickly in the mornings.) 6-10 @tinoreading Room: This is Tino’s new location in District 1, and it was a pleasant 10min walk from my hotel! Also like how this new location had more natural light and felt airier! Still charming, as before. They open at 2PM, but are always open online, of course. It’s also a great place to get hard-to-find or more curated English books in Vietnam. They also do special orders, and Tino was processing some of the new special order arrivals when I got to his store. We had a nice chat (chats with booksellers are always very nice, imo), where he was telling me which of the titles move quickly, which are his personal choices that don’t move quickly or haven’t moved (it happens), and other trends that he sees from his store. The plushies he sells are also from a Filipina creator based in Vietnam! On hindsight, I should’ve gotten one for my daughter. Will make it a point on my next visit! #bookstoresinvietnam #Vietnamesebookstores #bookstoresoftheworld #bookstoresofinstagram #bookstorevisits #TeamPRH

It was my enormous pleasure to FINALLY meet @cafedandy, who I’ve been following for a while now, since his #100ViewsofManila series. I’ve fallen in love as well with his #100viewsofsaigon and #100TastyFoodofSaigon, because it was a way of revisiting those places and dishes that I recognized. And when I saw that his newest picture book, with author @steph_steph_sy—A ROOF!—was acquired and being published by @kokilabooks of @penguinrandomhouse, I may have done a fist-pump, because I also get the privilege of sharing it with bookstores and readers in the Philippines, where they’re both from, though they’re both based elsewhere now. Total fan moment, then, to have finally met Daniel and chatted with him. I asked him how A ROOF! started, and he shared that he was apparently cold-emailed by the Kokila peeps (who always have good taste, imo, also evidenced by them following Daniel!). Also super fascinating hearing him talk about his experience of the publishing process with PRH/Kokila. He also gave me some prints from 100 Views of Saigon, which he kindly signed! I am keeping them all, haha. We hung out for about an hour until he had to head off to start his holiday. It was very cool of him to meet me before that! Anyway, A ROOF! is going to be released in September 2024. It’s a story of a typhoon, a roof that flies off, a girl who finds it in her backyard, and good ol’ Pinoy bayanihan when she and the community work to find the roof’s owners and return it to them. It’s a familiar and also comforting story, especially to us Filipinos. And because it’s published by PRH, it’s another Filipino story that can be found and read wherever in the world books are available. And I hope you guys get a chance to read it not just to support Steph and Daniel, but also because it’s a good kids’ story and very worth reading. #TeamPRH #Pinoypicturebooks #diversebooks #Filipinopicturebook

I LOVED Richard Osman’s first book in the Thursday Murder Club series and the sequel “The Man Who Died Twice” is just as fun. Dead bodies, the mafia, diamonds! I loved returning to the characters, especially Joyce and Ibrahim, but is it possible that too much of a good thing can leave you wanting less? The Thursday Murder Club series is delightful, entertaining, and easy but I found the plot of this one to be too overcomplicated and outlandish. Despite that, I do love this charming gang of four crime-solving retirees so I def will check out book 3 at some point! #bookreview #themanwhodiedtwice #richardosman #teamprh

✨ Life Update ✨ After 5.5 years almost to the day, today is my last day working at the @randomhouse imprint. I started as a baby assistant in a newly formed social media team with bookstagram experience and a dream, and after many MANY iterations of that social media team, creating literally thousands of posts and more influencer campaigns than I can count, I’m thrilled to be moving on to a truly incredible new opportunity. Starting Monday, I’ll be working with the corporate team at @penguinrandomhouse as the Associate Director of Social Media for the corporation at large. I’ve loved being able to work so closely with the books at an imprint level, and to get to creatively build alongside authors, marketers, and influencers, but I’m so SO excited to get a chance to take a look around at a higher level and implement change and contribute my creativity to projects with an even broader scope. I will forever be grateful for all of my colleagues from the @randomhouse @delreybooks @oneworldbooks @thedialpress @wellenough @convergent_books @hogarthbooks and @atrandombooks teams, as well as our former colleagues on the @crownpublishing team for our brief combined years together. Swipe to the end for just a few of my all-time favorite books I’ve been lucky enough and deeply proud to work closely on, out of the literal hundreds I’ve touched over the last 5 years. I’m excited, overwhelmed, terrified, and quite nostalgic today, friends. I can’t accurately express how much of a dream this is for Little Baby Bookworm Megan, reading her Junie B. Jones and wondering what it would be like to help create the books on her shelves. And I can’t accurately express how grateful I am for all of you across bookstagram, booktok, and booktube, who I have been so fortunate to work with over the years, and whose support of lil ol BooksnBlazers has been a huge help in my career. I love you all. Random House has been an incredible home, and I can’t wait to add some penguins to my life next week 🐧 #TeamPRH

Today is World Down Syndrome Day so I’m taking the opportunity to share this new picture book written by actor, artist, and Down syndrome advocate Mia Armstrong! Told from Mia’s point-of-view, this read aloud provides a window into her life, both the wonderful, like her best friend, hobbies, and unique perspective, and the not so wonderful, like being underestimated, overlooked, and made to feel less than for being different. The examples of Mia’s negative experiences that are included in the story - a frustrating interaction with a clerk at a shoe store and unkind comments from classmates about a project - are relatable and recognizable to young readers, providing excellent opportunities for discussion and further learning. Don’t miss the great Author’s Note at the beginning of the book and backmatter with advice from Mia for people who have questions about Down syndrome. “I Am a Masterpiece” belongs on home, library, and classroom shelves everywhere! Mia has been doing interviews about this book, which I highly recommend checking out too. 📚 “I Am a Masterpiece: A Empowering Story About Inclusivity and Growing Up with Down Syndrome” written by Mia Armstrong, illustrated by Alexandra Thompson, available now from Random House #teamprh

⏪LAST NOW NEXT⏩ LAST | FORGOTTENNESS by Tanja Maljartschuk I randomly picked this up at the library since I’ve never read a novel translated from Ukrainian. This was quite a unique and intellectual story that I’m not sure I completely understood. There’s a present day and historical timeline, and while I was able to grasp both, I’m not sure I fully get the connection between the two and its significance. Maybe something about time, politics, the cyclical nature of life?? Regardless, I’m glad I read it and maybe one day I’ll figure out what it all meant. Definitely not for the faint of heart, as there’s lots of history to unscramble. NOW | LAST NIGHT IN MONTREAL by Emily St. John Mandel I’m reading this for the #ReadWhatYouOwnInCommunity challenge for March! This month’s prompt is an author you love, and I’ve been meaning to read Mandel’s backlist, so here we are! I’m only 50 pages in, but I’m loving (and surprised by!) the amount of discussion of languages and linguistics! One of my favorite topics to learn and think about. Of course, there’s also a mystery here, and I think it’ll really pick up soon. Can’t wait to dive back in! NEXT | THE WARM HANDS OF GHOSTS by Katherine Arden Sorry to the library, because this book is overdue but I am not returning it til I’ve read it 🙈 Oops!! My toxic trait. BUT!!! I’m gonna read it next! And hopefully really fast! It’s billed as a historical novel with a speculative twist, and it sounds like a delightful, atmospheric mix of history & fantasy. #teamprh #currentlyreading #bookrecommendations #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstack

Oooh I knew I would like this one and it did not disappoint. Vinson Cunningham’s novel about a directionless young black man suddenly pulled into a history-making presidential campaign is thoughtful, wry, and captivating. I loved the way Cunningham’s narrator attempts to separate Obama-the-myth from Obama the man, exploring all the possible meanings of his campaign. The book strangely kept bringing me back to James Joyce’s’ Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. You get a similar sense that the narrator is looking back at a time when he was on the cusp of something, and the way he weaves in questions about art and religion that keep calling him back is really reminiscent of Joyce. It was also a great foray back into literary fiction because it’s a quick read with a narrative that keeps you pulled in. Definitely would recommend this read from @hogarthbooks #TeamPRH

A forbidden love flourishes in the wake of grief in Natasha Siegel’s THE PHOENIX BRIDE. 🗝️❤️‍🔥 Much like Siegel’s previous novel, SOLOMON’S CROWN, #ThePhoenixBride is rich with warmth, drama, and yearning—so much yearning. It captures two wayward hearts colliding in seventeenth century London. Celia is a young widow, trapped in an estate by her sister, suffering a seemingly incurable melancholy. David is foreign doctor, a societal outcast, enduring the dangers of his position. When David is the next in line of Celia’s many failed doctors the two meet with a spark. . . Yearning is so in right now, and this book really hits the spot. There is passion and plague, fury and fire both metaphorically and literally in this whirlwind historical romance. To top it off are Siegel’s gorgeously crafted, seamlessly integrated metaphors that continuously dazzle with their tactile descriptions. Loved spending my weekend with this totally winsome book. . . #TeamPRH

I love the design of Snowglobe, a new YA dystopian novel! The book depicts a climate-ravaged, frozen world where only a select few live in controlled warmth and comfort in trade for complete access to their lives. The resulting content is televised as 24-hour public entertainment to the rest of the population, who spend their lives creating electricity to keep the glittering dream of Snowglobe alive. But when Goh Haeri, the most famous celebrity in Snowglobe dies and power plant worker Chobahm, her doppelgänger, is asked to take her place, the secrets and violence that make Snowglobe possible are exposed. 📚 “Snowglobe” by Soyoung Park, translated by Joungmin Lee Comfort, available now from Random House #teamprh

As someone who has struggled with anxiety for as long as I can remember, I deeply relate to Opal the ostrich, the very anxious star of “Are You Mad at Me?” Opal struggles with “The Noodles” when overwhelmed, especially when she thinks someone is mad at her… which is most of the time. Can Opal push through her self doubt and assumptions to try something new? A favorite detail of this read aloud is Mel the chameleon, who is hidden throughout the book, and who we learn has been trying to say hi the whole book and thinks they’re being ignored by Opal. Finding Mel through the book was a highlight for my nieces, who empathized with the little guy at the end. A great pick for read-aloud with littles - and also neurodivergent readers of any age who struggle with rejection sensitive dysphoria. 📚 “Are You Mad At Me?” by sisters Tyler Feder & Cody Feder, available now from Rocky Pond #teamprh

GREAT EXPECTATIONS is out today! It has been such an honor and a complete blast playing a part in publishing this one-of-a-kind novel. I even got to make dad hats, lol! It is an intimate, pensive bildungsroman anchored by Vinson’s wise, witty, and charming writing (characteristic of his wonderful criticism, and lucky for us, now unfolding across an entire novel). I often notice readers loving a poet-turned-novelist, but for me, I can’t help but adore a critic-turned-novelist. This one happens to be a favorite novel of mine in recent memory. I hope you all will read it! Here’s one of the passages I marked up on my first read, giving you a taste of Vinson’s inimitable, compulsively readable style (and one that I couldn’t help but see a bit of myself in): “Over time I started to resort to novels . . . . Despite the fakenesses of character and plot, my antic, self-soothing style of reading - each paragraph combed quickly but repeatedly, at a sweeping diagonal angle, hoping to swallow whole each chain of thought - gave me the impression (maybe it was a delusion) that I could glimpse past narration and see the heart, hear the voice, of the novelist herself. The real person at the desk, squirming stylishly to be seen. I thought of fiction as a flexible tarp, easy to pierce and asking to be pierced, thrown over an attempt at correspondence.” Congratulations @vinsoncunningham! 💚 #GreatExpectations #VinsonCunningham #TeamPRH

🏀THERE’S ALWAYS THIS YEAR: On Basketball and Ascension by Hanif Abdurraqib🏀 This was my first Abdurraqib book, and it definitely won’t be my last. I now know what I’ve been missing out on! Through the lens of basketball, this essay collection explores the connection one can have to a city, to its people, and the perseverance and faith required to go on living. Abdurraqib makes a beautiful, spiritual plea for remembrance, love, and hope, ensuring we can’t forget values necessary for life. The power in Abdurraqib’s words blew me away—it almost felt holy in some moments (this coming from a very non-religious person). Just genius—beautiful, endlessly touching, and full of love. I highlighted so much, but won’t share any quotes as the advanced copy I read isn’t final. Make sure you have your highlighters/pencils/pens ready for this one. Thanks @randomhouse @netgalley for my advanced digital copy! This story felt like the shark/ocean version of The Ghost and the Darkness and the lions that terrorized railway workers in 1898 in Kenya. It was really interesting how many people didn’t believe it could be a shark or that sharks attacked humans. Understandable, since so little was known about them at that time, but what a horrific way to learn otherwise. Well researched and written, this is one that will keep you interested and honors the victims. I’m going to check out other books from this author, I hope he has more. #TeamPRH ABOUT THE BOOK Combining rich historical detail and a harrowing, pulse-pounding narrative, Close to Shore brilliantly re-creates the summer of 1916, when a rogue Great White shark attacked swimmers along the New Jersey shore, triggering mass hysteria and launching the most extensive shark hunt in history. During the summer before the United States entered World War I, when ocean swimming was just becoming popular and luxurious Jersey Shore resorts were thriving as a chic playland for an opulent yet still innocent era’s new leisure class, Americans were abruptly introduced to the terror of sharks. In July 1916 a lone Great White left its usual deep-ocean habitat and headed in the direction of the New Jersey shoreline. There, near the towns of Beach Haven and Spring Lake-and, incredibly, a farming community eleven miles inland-the most ferocious and unpredictable of predators began a deadly rampage: the first shark attacks on swimmers in U.S. history. For Americans celebrating an astoundingly prosperous epoch much like our own, fueled by the wizardry of revolutionary inventions, the arrival of this violent predator symbolized the limits of mankind’s power against nature. 𝑨 𝑫𝒂𝒓𝒌 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑫𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒊𝒅𝒆 A #TeamPRH appreciation moment for a very exciting new read! From NYT bestselling author Allison Saft comes a gothic, academic rivals-to-lovers sapphic fantasy and murder mystery—with possibly the most gorgeous cover I’ve ever seen. 🖤 Summary per publisher: “Lorelei Kaskel, a folklorist with a quick temper and an even quicker wit, is on an expedition with six eccentric nobles in search of a fabled spring. The magical spring promises untold power, which the king wants to harness in order to secure his reign over the embattled country of Brunnestaad. Lorelei is determined to use this opportunity to prove herself and make her wildest, most impossible dream come true: to become a naturalist, able to travel freely to lands she’s only read about. The expedition gets off to a harrowing start when its leader—Lorelei’s beloved mentor—is murdered in her quarters aboard their ship. The suspects are the five remaining expedition mates, each with their own motive. The only person Lorelei knows must be innocent is her longtime academic rival, the insufferably gallant and maddeningly beautiful Sylvia von Wolff. Now in charge of the expedition, Lorelei must find the spring before the murderer strikes again—and a coup begins in earnest. But there are other dangers lurking in the dark: forests that rearrange themselves at night, rivers with slumbering dragons hiding beneath the water, and shapeshifting beasts out for blood. As Lorelei and Sylvia grudgingly work together to uncover the truth—and resist their growing feelings for each other—they discover that their leader had secrets of her own. Secrets that make Lorelei question whether justice is worth pursuing, and if this kingdom is worth saving at all.“ … A DARK AND DROWNING TIDE is out this September and at the very top of my TBR! Will you be reading this fall? 🏷️ #adarkanddrowningtide #allisonsaft #gothicbooks #darkfantasy #fantasyromance #gothicromance #enemiestoloversbooks

Look at these gorgeous little babes! @aaknopf’s spring poetry list is outrageously strong this year. I adore each and every one of these collections. 🕯️ SPECTRAL EVIDENCE by Gregory Pardlo is perfect for poetry and nonfiction readers alike. It is an intellectual and intimate examination of not only how faith and law are permanently entwined, but how they, together, exacerbate bigotry. 💨 PACIFIC POWER & LIGHT by Michael Dickman is a complex homage to the Pacific Northwest, written with deceptive simplicity. Full of fleeting anecdotes, tense imagery, and ominous undercurrents. 🐍 POŪKAHANGATUS by Tayi Tibble is now available in paperback. A punchy, pop, and provocative look at young womanhood and indigenous identity. 🖊️ 36 WAYS OF WRITING A VIETNAMESE POEM by Nam Le is brainy, meticulous, and surprisingly playful. It builds upon itself, crafting a clever narrative of diaspora, history, and translation. 🕰️ A YEAR OF LAST THINGS by Michael Ondaatje is an ode to memory both kept and lost. It is as tender and warm as it is witty and incisive. 🍹 RANGIKURA by Tayi Tibble is a brighter, bolder, totally amped up sophomore collection. Like her first, it wrestles with colonial and postcolonial themes, all the while reveling in sun-scorched days and cocktail-clinking nights. 💡 WOKE UP NO LIGHT by Leila Mottley is a clean and cutting debut collection from an already beloved debut novelist. Here you will find, with artful compression, all the vulnerability, ferocity, and courage of NIGHTCRAWLING. . . #TeamPRH

“How to Fall Out of Love Madly” by Jana Casale will make anyone who has ever dated or liked shitty men feel better. This story alternates between Joy, Annie, and Celine, three 30-something-year-old women, navigating their everyday lives, dating, and learning to love themselves. I will say I really wanted to like this book more – and its message of women prioritizing themselves and overcoming insecurities – but it mostly made me feel sad. I liked the beginning but as the novel wore on, the grab bag of issues plaguing these millennial women and their intense thoughts of body dysmorphia/aging felt overwhelming. But if you want to read about women finally feeling fed up with crappy men and embracing their bodies, this is the book for you. Also you can’t beat the title and cover of this book 🦢❤️💞🧡 #bookreview #howtofalloutoflovemadly #janacasale #teamprh

On this fourth day of Women’s History Month we meet world traveler and prolific botanical oil painter Marianne North! Marianne was born in 1830 in England to an affluent and well-connected family, her privilege allowing her to explore and develop her interests - from music to botany to painting - while simultaneously limiting her life to the controlled sphere of Victorian etiquette. After her mother’s death in 1855, she pledged to dedicate her life to caring for father. Marianne was 40-years old when he died in 1869 but three years later she set sail for the tropics and, from 1871 to 1885, Marianne traveled around the world two times, set foot on every continent save Antarctica, and visited 15 countries at least once, alone and before inoculations, phones, or any other modern conveniences invented post-1900! Along the way she recorded hundreds of rare plants with her novel approach of depicting the subject and the details of its surroundings in vibrant oils. In some cases, her paintings are the only known record of the plant that exist today. In 1882, an exhibit of 627 of Marianne’s paintings opened at Kew Gardens, offering an impressive and immersive opportunity to explore her work. The next three years, as her hearing and health declined, Marianne expanded the exhibit and spent a year meticulously arranging the now 848 pieces. In her final years, she settled in the English countryside to write a 1,272-page autobiography, which was unpublished when she died in 1890 at 59-years old and then highly edited for publication. The exhibit remains today, with a restoration completed in 2009. As this book is aimed at young readers, the focus is Marianne’s persistence, curiosity, and continuing impact and there is only a brief mention of how her writings reflecting the “prejudices of her privileged upbringing.” As an early conservationist, Marianne vocally critiqued colonial plundering, the US lumber industry, and many other destructive environmental practices of her time, but that care was not extended to the indigenous peoples she encountered. I would be remiss in neglecting to acknowledge that Marianne was deeply racist, which was in turn reflected in her writing.

hi March, how did you get here and where did February go? At least a new month means new books to read! speaking of, what're you currently reading? Here's where we're at for March ~ Ericka: In anticipation of Hanif Abdurraqib's newest, I'm going through his love letter to A Tribe Called Quest, Go Ahead in the Rain, reading the genius of Mohsin Hamid in Exit West for a book club, and falling in the TikTok loop of Olivie Blake's Alone With You in the Ether. Rafa: I finished Land of Milk and Honey yesterday at a park and was glad I went outside my usual comfort zone and stuck through it. The text was so dense at first but when it starts to ramp up, it’s so much fun. It definitely chews you up and spits you out in the best way possible! Laura: After finishing Emily Wilde, I was craving more Heather Fawcett and picked up a few of her magical middle grade books including The School Between Winter and Fairyland and The Language of Ghosts. I read her book The Islands of Elsewhere awhile back and she has a real knack for writing stories with heartwarming sibling dynamics and making monstrous fairytale creatures seem cute and loveable. I also just devoured The Creative Act by Rick Rubin and it is an incredibly inspiring read full of fantastic advice. Even if you don’t consider yourself an artist, there’s tons of great takeaways about working with other people, motivation, and how to approach creative tasks. #currentreads #marchtbr #teamprh #prhinternational #bookstagram #bookstack

I know I said 2024 was going to be my horror/thriller/mysterry/dark-reading-aesthetic era, but I am quite literally a card carrying member at the local Super Weenie Hut Jrs. But also I love gettin books soooooo much, so when I become magically brave enough to crack one of these bad bois open, guaranteed I will not shut up about it. Here’s the round up: I HAVE already read Vampires of El Norte and it was everything to me (but technically and literally I read that in 2023, so it doesn’t count 😭). AND AND AND I started Angels Before Man, got one chapter in, realized that I was about to have a religious experience, and got so overwhelmed with anticipation that I had to put the whole book down. (It’s so good. So SO good literally from jump. I blame my cancer moon for my actions!) Sim’s book is the only sci-fi situation up here, but I’ve been loving their TikTok and am actually OBSESSED with the construction of this book. The cover is a poster, the map on the end papers. It’s set in an alternate Texas timeline where Al Gore won the 2000 election?? All the Berkley stuff (Such Sharp Teeth, Indian Burial Ground, Vampires…, Murder Road) I need badly to read. For my soul, I think. The Berkley TBR is never ending and I live inside of it. #teamprh And Nicola Yoon’s adult thriller. I’ll read anything that woman writes, so it is appropriate that this is the year we both launch our scary eras 🫡 thank you for your service, queen. (And thank you to my Knopf friend for sending me this arc ahhhhh) Gifted in a more official capacity are Lore of the Wilds, which just came out a week or two ago (YA, dark cottage core vibes, BLACK; need I say more?), and Watch Where They Hide (adult mystery suspense, domestic thriller). The Last Tale of the Flower Bride and the ARC of Midnight Rooms, my bookstore bosses picked up for me at a conference because they too have heard my lofty genre goals for this year 🙏🏾 Aaaaand last but certainly not least (actually most recent and maybe at the top of my TBR as soon as it comes in… 🛑 My stream of consciousness captions have finally met the character limit 😨 shenanigans continued in the comments ✊😓 #horrorbooks #diversifyyourbookshelf

Mary Shelley, author of “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus” and the mother of science fiction, is the focus of day three of Women’s History Month! In 1816, when Mary Godwin was 20-years old, she and a group of friends, which included the poet Lord Byron and Mary’s soon-to-be fiancé, poet Percy Shelley, spent a stormy weekend gathered at Lake Geneva in Switzerland. After telling scary tales, Byron proposed a ghost story competition that aspiring writer Mary, the daughter of the late Mary Wollstonecraft, author of “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman,” and who came of age during a time of medical and scientific innovation and experimentation that captivated her imagination, embraced the challenge. After experiencing a “waking dream” of “the pale student of unhallowed arts kneeling beside the thing he had put together,” Mary wrote “Frankenstein.” Published in 1818 with a first print run of only 500 copies, soon everyone was talking about the novel and it’s shocking, lady author. By 1823, “Frankenstein” had been adapted for the stage and the first film adaptation was released in 1910, with adaptations in many mediums to follow. Of course, what Mary made wasn’t quite a ghost story, it was the first publication of what we today call science fiction! Learn more about Mary Shelley in “She Made a Monster” written by Lynn Fulton and illustrated by Felicita Sala, available now from Knopf.
