What We Devour 3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I’m just so confused. I think I just don’t understand, or it went over my head?? First off, the idea for this book is fantastic. The author had a beautiful story in her head, I just feel like it didn’t translate well on paper, or it was just poorly written. There were some instances I felt like the author just forgot to write in parts of the scene, and the timeline of the novel wasn’t explained well, or the development of relationships between character was given very little context. Or again, maybe I just missed the point! A complex dark fantasy story of magic based upon self-sacrifice and blood contracts, morality, mortality, and capitalism. Guess I'm writing a #YAnovel now? lmfao While I'm having a draft to my first book's sequel looked over, I decided to tackle a more lowkey, low-stakes project. This one's looking to be a novella, potentially even a young adult one, mingling cozy beach town vibes with some good old-fashioned existentialism. Right now, the working title is "Ghosts of Seasalt Cove." As of right now, it follows 17-year-old Jasmine Tsuki who finds herself a phantom in her coastal hometown of Seasalt Cove. Befriending a reaper appearing in the form of a lifeguard, Jasmine tries to piece together exactly what happened to her, and find peace with all the unresolved conflicts she had in life, lest she become one of the town's lost souls. This one's gonna be a standalone. The idea kinda just randomly popped into my head from my love of cozy beachside vibes, along with a desire to write something more #magicalrealism, and my unhealthy love of seashells and sea glass. I never thought I'd write anything YA, but Jasmine's age and the general tone and vibe is screaming YA for whatever reason, so here we are. No clue when it'll be done. This is still the first draft, but I figured a lighter project would be easier to get out as my next book while I'm busy on the larger projects. #amwriting #novella

Sylvia Plath's childhood copy of this #YAnovel - #signed twice by Plath, with an original drawing by her and her bookplate laid in - the almost-too-apt story of a young Roman girl exiled to the soggy shores of Britain and burdened with a literal-minded mother named Aurelia. On February 21, 1944, a middle-school-aged Plath visited #Wellesley's Hathaway House Bookshop and purchased a copy of Caroline Dale Snedeker's THE WHITE ISLE. Snedeker was the author of several popular historical novels set in the ancient world, writing a few years before Rosemary Sutcliffe and possessing a similar appeal; Plath read this novel a month after writing a school paper on "Roman People Places and Things" (Rollyson). The heroine Lavinia, like Plath, is barely 13 and the daughter of an "Aurelia" - the same name as Plath's mother, which Plath has carefully underlined three times in the book. Plath apparently enjoyed the book beyond these parallels; according to biographer Clark, she "read several books by Caroline Snedeker" (77) that summer. Her affinity for the book is further suggested by her two ownership inscriptions over two years (including one skillfully penned within the sketch of a tree very similar to the one that stood before the bookshop where she bought the book), as well as the time and effort she took to carefully paste parts of the jacket into the book itself. Here are some books I have read lately! Have you read any of these? If not, what book have you read recently? Dear Mrs. Bird - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ This novel by @ajpearcewrites was a fun read. Though it is historical fiction, set during WW2, it was a different take as the FMC is doing her part on the home front by helping with the fire department and working at a local magazine. I loved the unique writing style as well. The Summer of Songbirds - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ This book by @kristywharvey felt so nostalgic as I worked at a summer camp for 4 summers during college. I loved the way these three friends do hard things for one another and find the courage to do hard things themselves. They also show up for the woman who owns their beloved camp when she needs them. Borrow My Heart - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ This YA novel by @kasiewest was cute. Wren works at an animal rescue and has a generous heart despite having a difficult relationship with her mom. It was so sweet to watch her heart heal, allowing her to finally take a step forward with the new boy she met. The Vanderbeekers Lost and Found ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This book by @karinaisreadingandwriting is the fourth in the series. And I have loved each one just as much as the first. This one walks though some more challenging topics, but does so in such a gentle way, making it easy for kids to understand and relate. When Rabbi Rafael Grossman, whose story is the basis of the Eisner nominated graphic novel A VISIT TO MOSCOW, illustrated by Yevgenia Nayberg, traveled to the Soviet Union in 1965, he left behind a small notepad with his notes of July 22 about his group's Moscow tour. Rabbi Shawn Zell, a well-known Yiddishist, provided the following translation of the notes: "I believe the two lines in Yiddish are a message. The top Yiddish line reads: Mincha B.H. (With G-d's help) Leventober. The second Yiddish line reads: Cherkizever in the yard/courtyard." The meaning of that message remains unknown, but perhaps it has something to do with Rabbi Grossman's discovery of the little boy, known as "Zev," depicted in A VISIT TO MOSCOW.

A break from posting and an online presence was 𝙚𝙭𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙡𝙮 what the doctor ordered! During April, here’s what happened: 🎓I graduated from college with a Bachelor’s in Professional Studies, a Minor in Sociology, and a Certificate of Education ✍️I took a break from most writer things to focus on relaxing and resetting my headspace. There were a few days I did some character work for CBOI, but I didn’t fully dive into the story until yesterday when I cranked out 600 words and finished a chapter! After that, I was mentally tired the rest of the day BUT I hadn’t really written since before I moved. 🧶Even though I wasn’t writing, I was still 🅒🅡🅔🅐🅣🅘🅝🅖 - spent many hours crocheting and cross stitching. Last week I made an entire blanket in about 6 days🤯 I’m very proud of myself for that. Not only because of the timeline but because I finished a full-length blanket (something I’ve never done before) 📖It’s been a while, but I opened a physical book and read for a couple hours a little while back! It felt so good to disappear into another author’s world they created💙💙 🐕🦺My service dog, Tully, and I have been doing one long(ish) walk a week until the weather warms up. On days it’s chillier and I don’t feel like freezing, we’ll do quick bursts of training throughout the evening after I get off work. When it gets warm - and stays warm - we’ll be doing longer walks more often, throwing in an occasional run😊 Not having to worry or stress about posting or writing or promoting anything did wonders for my energy. I really finished this over the weekend, but it seemed like a great book for the start of #aapiheritagemonth It just has such a beautiful cover. And let's be real we judge books by covers 😂. The image here is actually a screenshot from author @axieoh 's website, since even the pink of the website goes so well with the cover. Making for a really beautiful pairing. I am a sucker for all things mythology inspired, and this one is based on Korean Mythology. Sometimes mythology based works can get bogged down in trying to be a mythology lesson, instead of a mythology story. This one didn't fall into that trap. Aujourd’hui je vous présente « Je t’ai Aimé dans une Autre Vie », un roman écrit par David Arnold. 📚 Evan rêve de dessiner le grand Nord, mais entre ses angoisses, son petit frère hypersensible et sa maman qui galère à joindre les deux bouts, son rêve s’éloigne petit à petit alors qu’il préfère rester avec sa famille. 📚 Shosh a, quant à elle, été une étoile montante du théâtre durant toute sa scolarité : Hollywood n’attend qu’elle. Mais suite à un drame familial, elle s’est tournée vers l’alcool et les excès, remisant son rêve au placard. 📚 Ces deux jeunes gens n’ont rien en commun, si ce n’est cette voix qui chante que seuls eux entendent, et qui les guide petit à petit l’un vers l’autre. Parce que leur rencontre était écrite et qu’elle dépasse l’entendement. ♥️ Ce roman YA est une pépite ! J’ai eu un gros coup de cœur pour Evan et Shosh, ainsi que pour Will, le petit frère d’Evan. L’auteur prend le temps, à travers les deux points de vue des personnages, de bien poser le contexte, les souffrances de chacun, ainsi que tout ce qui a pu leur arriver jusqu’à ce moment de leur vie. Les retours en arrière sont fréquents mais ne m’ont pas dérangée, au contraire ! ♥️ J’ai aussi été touchée par les histoires d’amour des autres vies : ces passages sont courts mais impactants. Le roman est très lent et contemplatif, donnant au lecteur l’envie de le déguster lentement, de tout ressentir pleinement. THIS DELICIOUS DEATH 🧟 My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Genre: YA Queer Horror Format: Audiobook TWs: Yes, DM me! *My Review: I decided to listen to this audiobook on a whim in the hopes that I could knock out one more book before the month is over. And when I tell you that I BINGED this audiobook in one sitting, I mean it! Overall, this was a wonderful YA queer horror novel. The body horror was amazing, the plot was well done (both the past and present chapters), and the characters were very fleshed out. It felt like a crazy roller coaster ride listening to this book. It was paced excellently, making it even more enjoyable and never boring. The description mentions that “Jennifer’s Body” fans will love this book; and as someone who loved that movie as a teen, I definitely agree with that statement! Another thing I loved was all the representation in this book. There are different race representations and queer representations (specifically bi and trans)- none of which are one-note stereotypes. Each portrayal was respectful and realistic, making each character fun to read about. Anyone who’s looking for a great queer book in the horror genre will really love this. Honestly, this is one of my new favourite horror novels that I’ve ever read. If it ever becomes a movie one day, I would definitely watch it as soon as possible. This is an extremely well done YA queer horror novel that will keep you entertained!

Eh, this was uneven. Only She Came Back by Margot Harrison is a YA novel noticeably inspired by the Gabby Petito case. Sam’s former classmate Kiri is accused of murdering her boyfriend in the desert while they were on a survivalist road trip. Sam, a true crime aficionado and aspiring podcaster, decides to get close to Kiri so she can get the inside story that the media will never hear. As Sam pursues the truth, she gets more and more entangled in the web of lies that surrounds the story of Kiri and Callum. I found the story reasonably compelling, but the reveals at the end were confusing because it felt like a lot of the plot hinged on very minute details mentioned earlier. The critique of true crime is there, but somehow heavy handed yet also wishy-washy, and only actively voiced by a side character or two (there are also too many side characters). I did find the descriptions of YouTube videos and other multimedia sections an interesting device. I was eager to read to the end but the conclusion was a bit dissatisfying. 3 out of 5 diaries.

⭐️ ARC REVIEW ⭐️ "But I guess that's the trouble with girls like me. We always get what we deserve." This novel follows Jo-Lynn, or Jo, Kirby, as she works to uncover the truth behind the sudden disappearance of her classmate and ex-best friend Maddie Price. Throughout the course of the novel, secrets come out, and no one is safe from hiding their truth. I really enjoyed all the landmark mentions of New York State and Rochester, where the story takes place. I also enjoyed how much insight Jo gave not only when it came to herself but on everyone else in the story. She is one of the most intuitive characters I've read in a YA novel in a very long time. The build-up to the climax was slow, but that didn't bother me because it allowed me to really piece together what we learned at the beginning of the novel to the end of the novel. Some of these plot twist I just wasn't expecting 👀👀 This book got me out of a reading slump, and I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. 🥳🥳🥳Pub Day Review: Where was Goodbye by @janicelynnmather 🥳🥳🥳 Where was Goodbye is a heartbreaking tale about grief and coping after a tragic death. It is essentially about how a family deals with the aftermath of suicide: the unanswered questions, the perennial “what ifs”, the all-consuming guilt and the constant regrets. Reading this book is not easy, so be mindful of the content warnings (suicide, depression, anxiety). There were a lot of heart-wrenching moments and my eyes were red from crying! I had to pause several times to take a breather. Reading Karmen’s POV was truly insightful. I really felt her pain and anguish. But I must commend the author for doing such an awesome job tackling the difficult issues with much sensitivity. Despite the heavy topics, I would recommend adding this book to your tbr. Mental health issues should be talked about more often and cease to be a taboo. I am really happy we have these kinds of YA novels available nowadays. It has been a hot minute since i read something with vampires … by that i meant, when twilight was released. So when I got the chance to read this book, I was like OK why not? ➡️Swipe Right for the real cover. The concept material is good just in time really for Coachella. Quick blurb it is about a group of friends who decided to grow for a music festival, but things went out when the place where they went to is full of vampires. There are scenes in the box that reminds me of Texas chainsaw massacre and the movie hide and seek. I know for others, Campiness may takes things the wrong way but for this book it really worked well. The character development was actually good because I thought the female character is going to get on my nerves from the beginning till the end but she didn’t. There are plot twist. I wasn’t expecting.
