Although the beginning of this hike isn’t anything special, the views at the top make it worth it. A quick 3.6 mile hike with 650 ft of elevation gain, Thunder Knob trail overlooks Lake Diablo in North Cascades National Park and is fairly easy minus the almost complete lack of shade for the entirety of the hike. FUN FACT: the lake gets its turquoise color from tiny particles of rock that come in with the glacial run off. The tiny rocks are commonly called ‘glacial flour.’ 🏔️ . . . Whilst hiking in mostly dewy and misty weather below the clouds, we summited Thunderhead Mountain. Summiting Rocky Top and Thunder Knob did not disappoint. Above the clouds, the sun was shining, and despite the soreness and hurt, the sun hitting my face gave me almost a second wind. We passed a man who was training for a larger section hike of the AT and chatted with him for almost an hour while he gave us life advice and wisdom. It was well out of the way of our route but well worth the miles, beautiful turquoise lakes which feed a hydro power station along the Skagit river, all shadowed by the peaks of Mt.Baker and Colonial Peak, Many of these peaks still growing and shifting as time goes on. At the end you will find North Cascades most wanted, sentenced to a night in the Alcatraz of the Cascades, his crime, infiltrating Ernie between 11pm and 3am causing much lack of sleep. An operation was launched in the early hours to catch said mouse dead or alive, at 3.05am he was safely in custody and incarcerated outside on the picnic bench. North Cascades National Park, WA. During our three-day camping there we visited following points and went on the following hikes: 🏔Diablo Lake Vista Point. 🏔Ross Lake Dam hike easy 1.6 miles roundtrip. 🏔Maple Pass Loop Trail is 7.2 trail. We didn't do the loop. In the 2nd half of July, after 2.5 mile point, the trail was covered with snow. So bring microspikes if you are hiking it before August. 🏔Ann Lake. We encountered this lake on the Maple Pass trail, but didn't go up close. This lake is accessible from the Maple Pass Trail. 🏔Rainy Lake via 2-mile round trip is accessible from the Rainy Pass Trailhead, which is located at the same trailhead as Maple Pass trail. It's flat and is ADA accesible. 🏔Thunder Knob Trail is 3.5 miles round trip trail. It is popular and busy due to it's proximity to the HW 20 and Colonial Creek campground. 🏔Ladder Creek Falls is a 0.5 mile trail with the views of the Skagit River and a dam. Fiquei encantada pela cor dos lados e pelo visual lindo dos glaciares no alto da montanha. COM CRIANÇAS: As opções de trilhas fáceis são limitadas, mas para quem encara trilhas grandes o parque é o paraíso. 📷Com crianças pequenas a dica é curtir a região do Diablo Lake, nós levamos cadeiras e deixamos os pequenos brincando nas águas (ultra geladas) e ficamos curtindo o visual. ⭐️O mirante do Diablo Lake é imperdível, é muito lindo. ⛴Outra pedida muito especial é o passeio de barco, e o ponto de saída do barco - com passagem sob a ponte estreita da barragem - é um espetáculo. O tour tem saídas diárias as 11:30 e as 14:30, custa $45 para adultos e $22 para crianças entre 3-12 anos. Reserve com antecedência! Outras paradas lindas: 💙 Mirantes do Ross Lake 💙Lake Gorge: mirante LINDO e uma ponte com vistas bem especiais do rio e das cachoeiras. Se você tem medo de altura, vai ter dificuldades de atravessar a ponte porque balança um pouco. 💙Happy Creek Trailhead: cachoeira bonita com trilha fácil. TOPA UMA TRILHA MAIOR? Last Sunday's adventure! Went to one of our favorite hikes in the area, Thunder Knob 😁 It was an early morning, but so worth it to beat the crowds. We've hiked this three times now: once when I was about 7 weeks from giving birth to Milo, once 7 weeks after giving birth...and now our third round, exactly 4 years (to the day) since our first trip up the trail!
