#tbt ⭐⭐ Name: The Alchemist Author: Paulo Coelho I bet I'm going to be hated for this...oh well. "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho starts off pretty strong. You meet Santiago, a shepherd boy in Spain yearning for adventure. He travels to Morocco, chasing a dream of finding treasure. The exotic setting and Santiago's initial curiosity pulls you in and makes you want to read on. However, the charm fades fairly quickly. The plot gets repetitive as Santiago encounters one symbolic figure after another, each spouting the same vague philosophy about "following your dreams" and "listening to your heart". Halfway through, these encounters become predictable and frankly, boring. Coelho tries very hard to sound profound, but the metaphors fall flat. The prose is repetitive, and the characters, despite their grand titles like "The Alchemist" and "The King," feel one-dimensional. The ending, which ruined the book for me at least, feels rushed, leaving you with a sense of "wait, that's it?" I believe a lot of people who rave about "The Alchemist" either don't really read, haven't read good quality books, or want to follow the hundreds of celebrities who have endorsed the book over the years. Or maybe it was just a right-place, right-time kind of read for them.
