As for me {Sia} I'm your local Bainbridge herbalist, wildcrafter, permaculture enthusiast, forest skills student, Druid initiate and the maker behind Folk & Fire Growing up rurally in the San Juan mountains of southern Colorado and on the edge of th Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana meant that I had quite a different childhood. Winters were spent trapping beavers and processing pelts; Summers were spent cutting firewood, listening to the coyotes and playing in streams. Nature was my home and those around me passed down the skills needed to thrive in it. I learned how to make spit poultices from bug bites from the old timers in town and how to read the weather from dandelions. As i continued through life I realized that many people didn’t have the same connection to the earth I was able to grow up in. I wanted to change that - to offer folks even in the busiest cities a chance to have a piece of the earth to take care of them. Stepping into herbalism was the obvious path for me and I'm so glad I did. Now I make herbal remedies, teach folk medicine making & practical skills and mother my boys in the ways of the wild folk. Learning herbalism is a life-long journey and I’m overjoyed to be a forever student of the plants. One of the things I am loving about our new home, is all the amazing culinary herbs that I can forage from our yard. Yesterday I walked the property and grabbed a bunch of garlic mustard. It is so flavorful and right now my yard has a ton of it! It's invasive so harvesting as much as you want is great for the environment. Finely chopped and incorporated into my chicken meatballs, which I popped in the air fryer. I then went back out to find some colorful accents for the salad. Wild chives, violets, garlic mustard flowers and dandelion were tasty and beautiful additions. If you forage your own yard please be safe and forage ethically! I unexpectedly stumbled upon the most gorgeous stand of hawthorns today and was just awestruck. It seemed to go on forever and the whole area felt so deeply peaceful. I know this is a place I’m going to be coming back to often. Hawthorn is one of the main ingredients in Heart Portal, helping to offer support for the cardiovascular system and nourishing the spiritual essence of the ♥️. Lovely Wild Garlic Pesto is such a tasty accompaniment to have with snacks such as pakoras but it can also can be used in so many other ways. I like to use it as a simple dip with crudités or chips or stirred into hummus to make it extra special. It’s great used as a sandwich, panini or wrap filling. Introducing Sean Croke ~ Who will be presenting at the 9th Annual Viridis Genii Symposium. Sean is a #wildcrafter, gardener, practitioner, #medicinemaker, and teacher. He lives on a 25 acre plot of land with his family and a bunch of other humans, animals, and plants on occupied Chehalis tribal territory, but he works and moves extensively within Skokomish, Squaxin, Nisqually, and Lummi lands in the area often called “Washington State”. He is a father and loves to take care of living things of all sorts. He is the head teacher and founder of The #HawthornSchoolofPlantMedicine, a nine month program that connects plants to people by visiting the many different landscapes that exist within the Pacific Northwest and the plants that live upon them, while also learning cultivation, medicine making, and clinical skills. Sean runs a small herbal medicine company called #UnderstoryApothecary that produces small batches of extracts and fresh plant material from either the farm or the wilds. He also works with #cascadiaterroir, a small essential oil company that he picks and distills for. He does his best to provide medicines to the Canoe Journey Herbalists every year. Sean graduated from The Evergreen State College in 2012 with a BA/BS in Ethnobotany and Organic Chemistry and maintains a deep love of #phytochemistry. He was a practitioner and the main #medicinemaker for the now defunct Olympia Free Herbal Clinic for five years, and continues to see clients on a sliding scale down to zero in the name of keeping herbs accessible to everyone. Sean is currently really excited about planting alders and camus, and hopes that the salmon will run thicker than ever in the centuries to come. Finally got around to processing my last harvest of Lemon Balm. Not only does lemon balm taste amazing but it has a wide variety of health benefits including but not limited to the following: - Believed to have calming effects on the nervous system, helping reduce anxiety and stress. - May help improve sleep quality and alleviate insomnia by promoting relaxation. - Contains antioxidants that help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. - May have positive effects on cognitive function, including memory and concentration. BOOK REVIEWS I was recently asked by the @nzlistenermag to give a review of my favourite cookbook and to be honest I don't have a large selection as I've never been able to eat half of the recipes in them so have never bothered, which is why I wrote my own! But I have been so inspired over the last few years by @pascalbauder Instagram page I just had to get his latest book Wildcrafted Fermentation 🌾 Being an avid forager and chef I absolutely adore this wildcrafting bible by Pascal Baudar, it is actually the only cookbook I have brought for myself ever! From fermentation basics to fermenting with your environment; making your own wild cheeses, foraged and fermented soups, pastes, spreads and sauces, he dives into using your own local ingredients and exploring local and ethnic flavours. My latest experiment guided by this wonderful book is a wild fermented spice paste using my own foraged wild weed seeds from last summer and lush spring edible weeds, weedchi, which is an edible weed version of kimchi, a wood ear mushroom chilli soy ferment and I coat my cashew cheeses in a dried ferment which originates from Nepal called gundruk. Hi y’all! I made another big decision. It’s been almost 7 years that I’ve been sharing about the Alchemy herbal wines here on this social media platform and while I can see how people find lovely artistic sparks in this creative outlet, I’ve mostly experienced it like a burden, hence much of the inconsistent and boring postings. So, I finally decided to hire someone to support this part as I work on building out the next phase of Alchemy’s expression. I feel really great about her he(art)full writing and her relationship with and commitment to many shared values. I have a long list of potential topics and tons of photos that she’ll work with. I will review her writing and likely add to it before posting. It’s very important to me to be transparent and honest in my life and in my expression here. And, I will most probably still share things here myself when spirit moves me. ~*~ My intention is to bring more liveliness to Alchemy’s digital shelf, so that more people will find us and get to enjoy the beauty and meaning of Alchemy Herbal Wines, while my physical and mental efforts will be going into remodeling the new brewing space and dealing with all of the legalities and as always dedicating as much time as I possibly can to harvesting and processing the ingredients for the Alchemy brews, as there will be many new eliXirs coming once we move into our new space.
