Two kings. The Italian King of wines with the legend BB King. This Barolo has fruity notes of fig, black cherry, cooked plum, and strawberry. The tertiary notes were mushroom and forest leaves. Tannins were firm.

This 2017 Barbaresco from @marchesibarolo was stunning. I rated it a 94 in my personal cellar. Notes of fresh summer strawberry, dried stewed cranberry, vanilla, and a little clove spice. The wine had creamy tannins, high acidity, and a long finish. The ruby garnet color shown in the glass begging to be drank. Wines such as these are almost a sensual experience, hence the pairing with a top record from The Ohio Players.

DOC Pinot Grigio is never a bad move in the spring time. Paired with a fun compilation album of the OG blues titans that changed music forever.

đŸ·2017 Rosato Brut Metodo Classico from @cantina_della_volta 🌏Emilia-Romagna, Italy 🍇100% Lambrusco di Sorbara I did not know that Lambrusco was made in rosĂ© style, and I’m so glad it is, because this is delicious! There’s so much going on here: fresh, tart strawberry, raspberry, and cranberry with some orange zest and almond butter cookie aromas. It’s dry, bubbly, and has fantastic acidity. Fun Fact: The current winemaker, Christian, is converting the farm to organic, and he makes every single one of his Lambrusco wines by the traditional (aka champagne) method, and he’s the only Lambrusco producer to be doing that! . . . . . #wine #winegoals #winespeak #winestagram #winelover #winemeplease #winetasting #winetastingevent #winetime #winelife #tastingnotes #winegeek #winereview #winereviews #winejourney #winejournal #wineenthusiast #winemoments #winestagram #instawine #winesofinstagram #wineeducation #somm #sommlife #sommelier #sommspirations #lambrusco #lambruscowine #lambruscodisorbara #italianwine #italianwinelover

đŸ·2021 Domaine Clape Cornas “Renaissance” 🌏Northern RhĂŽne, France 🍇Syrah I’ve never had a Syrah I loved so much until now. I tried this one a few weeks ago and can still remember exactly what it smelled and tasted like. This wine was bursting with fresh fruit, plums, cherries, and berries. The tannins and acidity were balanced so well. Everything about this wine was in perfect harmony. If you are lucky enough to come across a bottle of this, and you are on the fence with the price, I would say it is absolutely worth it, and I don’t often say that lol! đŸ·1997 Lafite Barons de Rothschild RĂ©serve SpĂ©ciale Pauillac 🌏Pauillac (Left Bank) Bordeaux, France 🍇Cabernet Sauvignon This was such an enjoyable wine. It had lots of earthy notes and dried fruit
plums, black and red cherry, with hints of fresh fruit still lingering around. The more I sat there and sipped on this, the more it opened up and became so expressive! I couldn’t find much about this wine. I’m assuming it’s Cabernet Sauvignon based, but probably has some Merlot blended it. đŸ·1997 Dunn Vineyards 🌏Napa Valley, CA 🍇100% Cabernet Sauvignon Dunn Vineyards is known for making stunning Cabernet Sauvignon, and this one was no exception. I love how much acidity is still in it, and the tannins are so perfectly integrated into the wine. With a variety of dried black fruit and earthy notes, what stood out the most was the little hint of dried rose petals, which I thought was really special and not so typical for Cabernet Sauvignon. Fun Fact: Dunn Vineyards has all of their tasting notes for all of their vintages on their website, along with when they tasted the wine. G.D. Vajra is the epitome of a family-owned and -operated estate in the Barolo district of Piedmont, Italy, with winemaking roots dating back to the 1880s. It has a beautiful portfolio of wines spanning, red, rosato, and white styles, both still and sparkling, made with local varieties such as Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, Freisa, Moscato Bianco, among others. đŸ‘đŸ»đŸ‘đŸ» In the 1970s, it was the first estate in the region to receive organic certification đŸŒ± and continues to operate with organic and sustainable production practices today. This is the G.D. Vajra Rosa Bella (2023) đŸŒ· – another wine we’ll be featuring at our upcoming rosĂ© wine class, representing the saignĂ©e method of production. 👀 It was made from mostly Nebbiolo grapes and, to a lesser extent, Dolcetto and Barera. 🍇 It has a beautiful combination of freshness and vivacity with red-berried, hibiscus, watermelon rind, and oyster shell characteristics. It’s crisp and delicious with medium alcohol (13.5% ABV) and bright acidity. The winemaker’s tasting notes refer to a “sapidity” in this wine, which is defined as “a pleasant flavor,” but I have now learned that in winespeak this means a pleasing saline, mineral, and savory quality, which is absolutely evident in this glass. Cheers to the diverse and delicious world of rosĂ© wine! đŸ„‚đŸ„‚đŸ„‚ . . . . . @gdvajra_barolo @giuseppe_gdvajra #gdvajra #barolo #nebbiolo #barbera #dolcetto #piedmont #vinoitaliano #cincin #familyowned #organic #sustainable #winespeak #saignĂ©e #winemaker #wineeducation #roseallday #sips_ensemble

California wine, California band. Dried strawberries and black cherries sit on the palate. Typically, California is a little warm of a climate for my preference on Pinot Noir. However, we were eating a strong, hearty ragĂč. So this wine paired well since it was a little bit stronger and consisted of darker fruits. Also, @dawestheband rocks.

đŸ·2019 Gravel Bar Cabernet Sauvignon 🌏 Columbia Valley, WA 🍇 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec This wine has smooth, integrated tannins, and it’s well balanced with flavors of black plum, blackberry, black current, black cherry, green bell pepper, mint, and vanilla. It paired perfectly with the aged cheddar from @grazingtheory I haven’t had a lot of Washington wine, but this makes me want to try more! . . . . . #wine #winegoals #winespeak #winestagram #winelover #winemeplease #winetasting #winetastingevent #winetime #winelife #tastingnotes #winegeek #winereview #winereviews #winejourney #winejournal #wineenthusiast #winemoments #winestagram #instawine #winesofinstagram #wineeducation #somm #sommlife #sommelier #sommspirations #redwine #cabernetsauvignon #cabernetsauvignonđŸ· #cabsauv #wineandcheese

Glorious Chardonnay from Piedmont. Lime in color but lemon in taste. Very fresh fruit, a great stony minerality, with the slightest vanilla cream note. Medium-bodied. Great wine from a region not as known for Chardonnay. This Chardonnay is from a region most known for their Nebbiolo grapes.

Your eyes are shut tight, your nose dipped genteelly into your glass, seconds later your head lifts and you ask “What am I supposed to be smelling here?” “What do you smell?”. What I smell and what you smell are rarely the same, and guess what? It doesn’t matter. Like most passionate students of wine (especially those seeking certifications and advanced degrees), I spend a great deal of time sniffing everything. Having a common language for winetasting allows people of diverse backgrounds to communicate fluidly. Learning the basics is desirable and can add fun when sharing wine with others; but should not be stressful for the average consumer. At a recent tasting of wines from Bourgogne and Bordeaux, a heavily Aussie accented presenter swirled the glass before handing a juicy red Burgundy to me. He raised his glass to his nose as I did mine and we both said, almost in unison “Horsehair!”. The scent took us both back to memories of saddling up a freshly brushed horse, while also hinting at the wine’s age and vineyard location. A connection was made. Wine and food writer @dink_discourse often refers to Barbados cherries, Marionberries, Hibiscus or Sorrel flowers and sea urchin. Do these hold any meaning for you? If so, enjoy these bonus associations when they occur, if not move on. Detecting aromas is not a parlor trick or for showing off; but do learn to detect some common faults. For this reason, I never tell attendees in my classes what to smell or taste; rather to “feel the sensations” of the wine. The important elements of a balanced wine are in its acidity, tannin structure, residual sugar level, alcohol by volume (ABV%), mouthfeel – assets that most people can detect - tartness, sweetness or the lack of it, the heat of alcohol and the thin or thick texture on the palate. After all, what the average drinker wants from a glass of wine is enjoyment. If you fancy yourself “not average” by all means join me in exploring all the good and bad smells associated with wine – otherwise, as my class descriptions advise “Smell, Sip, Taste, Enjoy” and leave it at that. #winespeak #winetasting #wineeducation

Sip Tip: Approving Wine at a Restaurant I was inspired to post this after watching a video from @cristienorman_somm (check out her page!) When you go to a restaurant or wine bar and order a bottle of wine, chances are the server/sommelier will pour a small amount of wine into a glass for you to “approve”. What most people don’t know, is that you are NOT approving whether or not you LIKE the wine. You are letting them know that you don’t see any faults in the wine. Here’s what you do: Look at the color, then swirl and smell. You are looking for wine faults: Corked Wine (stinky wet newspaper smell), Reduction (rotten eggs or cooked cabbage), Volatile Acidity (vinegar or nail polish remover), and Oxidation (brown in color, when it’s not meant to be, bruised/old fruit smell). If you cannot deduce by aromas alone, you can take a quick taste. . . . . #wine #winespeak #upyourwinegame #winetasting #winetime #winetips #winetip #wineetiquette #wineapproval #restaurantwine #sommelier #sommelierlife #sommeliers #somm #wineeducation

What a beauty. Deep ruby color. High tannins balanced with acidity. Tobacco with sweet strawberry with black cherry hit first. Followed by smoke, vanilla, chocolate, and pomegranate. Truly a top tier wine that’s well balanced with a high complexity in flavor and aroma. Can’t wait to revisit in a few years as well once aged in the cellar.

You know you’re in France when you don’t know A SINGLE bottle in the Champagne section. Not one. . . @ici_meme_caviste near Gare de Lyon is one of my favorite wine shops in Paris. They have one of the most eclectic and obscure collection of French wines I’ve probably ever come across with a heavy focus on natural and biodynamic wines. In other words this is is not the place to seek out a bottle of Lynch Bages. . . They often stick a glass of wine in your hand when you walk in. . . I walked in last night and said “je veux des vins bizzares”, I want bizzare wines. . . I walked out with two natural reds (last shot) one from the Pyrenees and another from the Jura. . . “There are some very interesting things happening in the Jura the merchant said”. . . “So I hear” I replied. . . . . . . . . . . . . . #winestore #wineshop #wineshopping #wineshops #bourgognelovers #burgundy #burgundywine #burgundywines #vin #vinrouge #terroir #terroirs #frenchwine #frenchwines #winelover #winetasting #winegeeks #winegeek #wineoclock #winemoments #winemoment #winestagram #wein #wine #winespeak #vinfrancais #vins

What do you do when you love the top six white varieties in Alsace? Yes, you make a blend out of them. The blend was 33% Gewurztraminer, 30% Sylvaner, 17% Pinot Blanc, 7% Riesling, 7% Pinot Gris, and 6% Muscat. Such a pleasant and fun experience. Honeysuckle, peaches, and pear on the nose. Full-bodied and brightly acidic while being well balanced. The drink was as smooth as a Nat King Cole record.

Let’s talk sparkling wine.. There are many ways sparkling wine is made and it is endlessly fascinating. Here is how we made M Sparkling: Blanc de blancs - this is a term used to note that the wine is made from white grapes, beautiful Chardonnay from Anderson Valley in our case, offering up exquisite notes of green apple and pear. MĂ©thode Traditionnelle - meaning the wine was made in the true Champagne style, with secondary fermentation occurring in bottle. This takes times and patience which is generously rewarded with deep, rich flavors of almond and brioche on the finish. Next we’ll post about the incredible processes of liqueur de tirage, en tirage, dosage & disgorgement. Stay tuned đŸ„‚ 📾: @greta_d_photography

ChĂąteau du Petit Thouars L’EpĂ©e Chinon 2018 with A Motown Christmas Beautiful, deep red in the glass. Dark fruits of blackberry and plum. Mushroom and dried leather was strong on the nose with a hint of yeast. Well balanced wine that we paired with a hearty smoked pork dish. The Cabernet franc had enough body to keep up with the protein, but it would also excel if sipped on its own due to its complexity.

CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET by Louis Latour. . . A wine that perfectly encapsulates my growing frustration with big-name French domaines that continue to flood ze duty free shops with overpriced and underwhelming wines. . . Is this Garbage? Of course it isn’t. But is worth the 80-90$ price tag? Not in a million years. This is one of those cases where the Vivino rating is spot on: 4.1 . . The domaine is responsible for over 100 labels. 100 wines! And just like with Guigal, I can count 4 average wines for every good one. . . We make our wines with as little intervention as possible. We use ZERO pesticides and ZERO herbicides in our vineyards. There are over 60 additives that conventional winemakers are legally allowed to use in their “wine”. Why do that? Well, usually it’s because they are trying to make inferior wine taste better by covering up it’s flaws. We don’t do that. Our Artevino grapes are grown organically or sustainably in Mendocino County. Our natural wines contain no colorings, no flavorings, or any other artificial chemicals. We don’t need them, and you don’t either! When you hear about a “chassis milled from pure titanium,” you don’t typically think of a wine opener. But there is nothing typical about Code 38 wine keys.
