Les Safres 2021 - Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Comment ne pas être dithyrambique quand un vin est aussi charmeur ? Je n'ai pas pris le temps de prendre des notes, et malgré cela, trois jours plus tard et après pas mal d'autres vins dégustés, c'est lui que je retiens. Tout est plein de cohérence, d'élégance et d'expression. Le nez est fumé, épicé, cacaoté, tout en proposant un fruit noir profond. Il nous immerge dans un décor réconfortant et feutré. Le domaine parle de vin au "style bourguignon" ; c'est en effet un vin de parfum, je les rejoins donc totalement. La bouche est dans le même esprit, sans aspérité, avec un fruit accessible, généreux mais plein d'équilibre. Cerise, cassis, thym, clou de girofle, réglisse, le vin explose dans une symbiose cohérente et délicate. 2007 Pichon Lalande 4 / 5 and ready to drink! Ruby, the nose of the 2007 Pichon Lalande is all about dark fruits - classic blackcurrants, plums, cassis and cedar. The palate has the prior notes but is enhanced with sweet spices, think cinnamon and nutmeg. The body isn't the biggest, med plus from my notes and acid is also med plus. Tannins are also surprisingly soft for the Left Bank and I probably ranked this at a med to med plus. 20s finish which is much more about elegance than power. Comparatively a 1995 I tasted last year was much more withholding and tannic. Some of the most captivating and celebrated wines around the world are made with oak aging. Cabernets of Napa Valley, Grand Gru White Burgundy, Bordeaux, Brunello… the list goes on. Consistently the most sought after rare wines, as well as wines scored favorably by critics, have all utilized oak aging in some capacity. This widespread global desire for oak characteristics has also trickled down to the everyday affordable wines. Many of these wines at low price points achieve the influence of oak aging with alternative and more affordable methods than barrel aging. What started as a suitable solution for transportation also had a positive effect on wine. Winemakers began to notice the oak barrels had a pleasurable impact on the wine. Oak aging allows for an extremely slow integration of oxygen, which gradually softens the wine. This process improves the flavor of many wines and also contributes great structural qualities, such as tannins imparted from the wood. Logically, if the wine spends more time in barrel, the resulting oak-influenced flavors are stronger. Plus, different levels of oak toasting results in various flavors, such as spices, caramel, and vanilla. Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2017 (Lidl), Italy Not overly sweet of fruit on the nose, a slight savoury oaky note with licorice, cranberry, cherry and raisin. Smooth silky tannins leaving a nice astringency on the side of the tongue with medium acidity. Some subtle menthol, vanilla, cranberry, raisin and cherry, leaving a slightly spicy sensation on the palate. A nice complex bold and dry wine and strong alcohol content. Many moons ago I drank a lot of German Riesling but these days I prefer my whites bone dry. 2004 Zilliken Spätlese is a real beauty, fresh and intense with lemon and honey notes. The acidity balancing out the sugar rather nicely It lingers on the palate. Just a touch of petrol on the finish. Excellent!

Took a bit of a break from drinking or reviewing wine. Today being my day off and the weather outside being rainy, I decided to pull a bottle from my collection. Went with the second and last bottle of a wine I have tried and reviewed previously. Hardys Crest Cabernet Shiraz Merlot 2003. Medium garnet, with slight bricking in the glass. Full-bodied, well-rounded tannins, slightly off-dry with medium acidity. Primary dark fruit aromas of plum with a faint hint of olive. Floral aroma of dried violet. Tertiary general aging aromas of dried fruit and leather. Notes of dried fruit with a hint of sun-dried tomato acidity and olive minerality on the palate. Finish is a combination of bitter, sour with a hint of saltiness. A definite result of the age. The length carries on for well after. We always schlep away from here with at least a whole case of wine and this trip was no exception. One of my faves from this trip’s tasting was this 2021 Cabernet Franc. 2021 was a rough year for reds in the Finger Lakes due to an insane amount of rainfall ☔️ The 21’s are on display right now, and boy did we have quite a few that were just too “wispy” and “light on their feet.” It is a testament to a truly great winemaker to make something beautiful out of even the toughest of vintages, and here we are with this 💎. Yes, this Cab Franc is on the lighter side but it is NOT light on the flavor & aroma 👃Cab Franc is one of those grapes I just love to snifffffff. This wine is just plain pretty. We are talking dusty florals 🌹, forest floor 🍄, cherry, raspberry and all the red berries🍓🍒. Don’t forget the touch of pepper we gotta have in our Franc. Not the green stuff, just a nice lingering spice note🌶️. Hickory Hollow has this big ass banner out front that says “GREAT REDS” and hey they aren’t lying!! 1967 Port hmm 🤔 out of the bottle it looked thin not to mention that the cork was soaked and leaking. But here we go. With only 30 minutes of air it has regained color and intensity. A beautiful wine, medium bodied sweet, complex and full of fruit. Beautiful!
I’m usually drinking the excellent Cabernet offered by this winery so when I came across the Pinot I was pleased as I don’t see it often. Russian River fruit from the 2010 vintage. Not showing any signs of slowing down with plenty of fruit left and on the subtle side for California Pinot. Very Good.

Château Chauvin 2009 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé 🍷👀 Très belle robe grenat, presque noire sur les reflets. Aucun signe d'évolution à l'oeil. 🍷👃 Nez très condensé, voire étouffé. Avec la première aération de plusieurs heures, des effluves de crème de cassis s'envolent avec de fortes notes boisées ; le lendemain, le vin sera plus frais, avec un fruit rouge plus incisif. 🍷👄 La bouche est à l'image du nez : malgré une première aération, elle est sur le bois, à la limite de l'ostentatoire. D'ailleurs le vin se révèle relativement astringent sur sa finale. Le lendemain, il est bien plus agréable : la cerise, la vanille, la framboise, et des notes torréfiées qui donnent un peu de volume à tout cela. Mais toujours un peu trop de bois... La charge tannique est impressionnante. Ce Chauvin aurait mérité a minima 5 ans, si ce n'est 10 ans de plus. Je suis davantage séduit par les millésimes récents du château ; l'arrivée de Sylvie Cazes à sa direction lui a permis de progresser considérablement et d'avoir un style bien plus contemporain. 2021 Robert Weil Kiedricher Riesling Trocken - apologies about the AP number I forgot to write it down (again)! A nice and solid 4 / 5. A great sipper on its own or with light cheese / Cantonese fare. Pale lemon green, the nose bursts with citrus notes - lime juice, lemon peel, lemon juice. There is something slightly grassy and slightly floral / blossom-like - also a hint of stone fruit (nectarine). It's medium-bodied with a cool sense of wet rocks, with piercing green apple acidity jolting the palate. 10s finish. The 2021 Robert Weil Kiedricher Trocken is an Ortswein (check the neck of the bottle). This means "local vineyard wine" - the wine is meant to show a sense of expression from a particular place. As noted from the Wine Advocate the wine comes from mostly the Wasseros vineyard, with some input from younger vines in the Klosterberg, Turmberg and famous Gräfenberg site. 7.9 grams of acidity per litre and 7.7 grams of residual sugar per litre. Drinking wines cellared and unmoved since release is incomparable. Case in point: I’ve never had a more redolent La Colombière, no matter the vintage. This 2013 is spectacular. It’s extravagantly nuanced, sapid and balanced. The domaine’s lavishly scented oak of youth is now but a subtle undercurrent subsumed under waves of cherry essence and sweet spices that trigger hedonic quivers with every sniff and sip. This bottle is totally in the zone. A sumptuous wine of absolute finesse. . The 2013 Clos du Roy also has never been moved since it was acquired nearly ten years ago. It seemed somewhat coy on first pour, hinting it might need more time in the glass. We did just that, shuttling between the other wines in the meantime. Then the fireworks started. . Roses, fennel, spearmint, cassis pastille and wet soil cajoled for attention before coalescing into a nectareous, heady perfume. The liquid turned boundless, vaporous, gliding with ghostlike energy. What a sigh inducing juice. Indeed for the time and space we shared today, this Bizot was pure perfection. . Phillip Jones crafts pinots that sit comfortably alongside any Burgundy elite any day. His 2012 Premium is nearly fully resolved now, the wine’s succulent, gently spiced berries accentuated by a subtle smoky undertone, and its plush sweetness laced with a delectable soil-inflected salinity. A deeply satisfying wine. . Galeyrand’s Les Retraits 2021 screamed “Old vines!” bearing all the marks of a meticulous natural vigneron. Compared to his other cuvées, Les Retraits seems to coast on a higher orbit. On the nose, it’s floral, delicate and expansive. The fruit was bottomless, creamy, ethereal. Wild, kinetic, gravity-defying, it curiously exudes an otherworldly tranquility. A stirring wine. . A wine’s inclination to please is proportional to what you are willing to give it. Like people, wine requires patience and empathy. How else can one fully appreciate its company? . Be it wine or people, spending time matters. End of the work week and needed something to pair with leftover spaghetti and meat sauce. Picked up a Romeo and Juliet Veneto Passimento Rosso 2021 from Famiglia Pasqua. Pale purple in the glass. Medium to full body, off-dry, mellow tannins and soft acidity. Primary red fruit aromas of ripe cherry, raspberry, dried fruit aroma of prune, floral aroma of violet. Same red fruit notes of ripe cherry and raspberry and secondary note of spice. The finish is tangy with a length that lingers for 6-8 seconds.
