This week WineWise was travelling with some students to the Rheingau region in Germany. Beside the visit to the VDP wine fair in Mainz, they also followed a masterclass at the Geisenheim Wine University with Dr Matthias Schmitt, visited some inspiring wineries and had lovely dinners. Also you can be part of this one day 😀. 🙏 @vdp.diepraedikatsweingueter 🥂 @weingutwegeler, @weingutleitz, @barth_sekt, @weingutdrcrusius, @gransfassian, @weingut-vonhoevel To gain professional knowledge about wines join our courses WSET Wines Levels 1-4. Day 29/100: Alfred Merkelbach Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese 2021. Lots of fun teaching the class tonight at the @internationalwinecenter . The class is just starting their Diploma (aka Level 4) journey and taking the Viticulture and Vinification course. It’s very foundational, and very necessary, but as is the case with most foundational courses, it can get a little bit dry talking about things like pruning and trellising system and the impact of sunlight and wind on photosynthesis, divorced from any geographic or liquid context. Totally necessary, but not the most fun. So there are a few bonus classes added to the standard curriculum, like tonight’s session - a white wine tasting workshop. It gives a bit of insight into what they have in store when they start D3, the grandmama level of the Diploma course. (It covers a huge swath of the still wines of the world, applying lessons from this foundational courses, and there’s a two day exam at the end, including a full day of blind tasting. It’s a bear of a course.) So we tasted all the wines blind. One of them was a fino sherry and it gave my sherry-loving heart hope when most of the glass knew that with one sniff (unlike me, some 15 years ago, in that very same room in that very same class, took a sniff and couldn’t place the wine until we were told what it was.) Before the fino, we had the Merkelbach which was just lovely. All orange blossom and citrus and iced white raspberry and wet stone with that perfect pinhead balance of sweet and sour. So good #100daysproject #winelover #winestagram #foodandwine #whatidrank #habitformation #winewriting #winestudy #germanwine #rieslingstudy #moselwine #wineducation #blindtating #selfie #speedwriting #winetasting #tastingnotes #winewoman

The #internationalviognierday celebrated on the last Friday of April, inspired me to re-visit this grape variety and taste its famous blend of côtes-du-rhone and its mono varietal version by @lesalexandrins vintage 2022, which opens up with some floral aromas of peach blossom, then evolves into ripe yellow pear, yellow apple, quince, ripe lemon, peaches, ripe apricots, melon and finishes off with tropical aromas of ripe pineapple and banana. Incredibly mineral it has a pleasant acidity and a full body, lush and rounded. A gorgeous drink! #wine #winesoftheworld #winebar #winebars #winetours #winetasting #wineappreciation #wineissharing #winestudy #winestudent #invinoveritas #wineisart #wineispoetry #wine #winelover #wineday #wineisapoeminaglass #wineoftheweek #wineworld #wineblogger #viognier

In 1988, Ron and Diane Miller, purchased the Mt George Vineyard, the site of the first vinifera plantings in the Coombsville AVA. Situated in a quiet corner of the Napa Valley a few miles east of the city of Napa, Mt George is a vineyard of undeniable strength. GEO has rich, concentrated, and well-knit layers of black cherry liquor, cocoa, nutmeg, toasted oak, and tea leaves. Dense tannins and great acidity provide balance and structure to this full-bodied Cabernet for the ages. Ever wonder why London is considered the centre of the world wine trade? On the heels of an inspiring trip to London (UK) for my DipWSET graduation ceremony, I am reflecting on why this historic city is often referred to as the centre of the world’s wine trade. So how does a country relatively new to wine production come to have its capital city emerge as the centre of the world wine trade? Someone who should know the answer to that is Jancis Robinson, one of the most renowned wine critics and writers in the world. She says, “Nowhere is better than London for the opportunities it offers to taste and learn about wine.” Finish reading my latest post divine-vines.ca (link in bio) #London #winemerchants #winebars #wset #winetrade #winestudy #winetravel #jancisrobinson

What is a corked wine? 🤔 You may have heard 🎧 the term thrown around – but what is a corked wine? Even those who are seasoned wine lovers ❤️ may have heard the term but might not know what it tastes like, or why it happens in the first place 🤷‍♀️. Corked wines are not harmful to drink 🍷, but just unpleasant 🤢. Day 28/100: Phillip Shaw Prosecco….from… Australia!! OK, so this is a bit of contraband…or something that would never be approved for the export market. Prosecco used to be a grape, but it also functions as a brand name for a region in Italy that makes a very popular wine. But you can’t trademark a grape name in the way you can trademark a place name. (I know, I know… the European appellation system isn’t really a trademark, but I don’t really feel like getting into the technicalities of it all.) So back around 2009, the Italians said Prosecco is the appellation and glera is the grape and you can grow all the glera you want anywhere you want to, but you can only call the wine Prosecco if it comes from this specific area in the Veneto. But the Australians were growing the prosecco grape and labeling it prosecco and didn’t plan to stop. So there is Prosecco in Australia, it just can’t be exported. Or something like that. Anyhoo… this is another Orange wine, the region, not the skin contact style. But I think it’s been kicking around perhaps a little longer than it should because it is indeed sort of orange, indicating a bit of age, and the fruit isn’t as fresh and blossomy as it probably was five years ago, or whenever this bottle appeared in my Copake cellar. As for the selfie… I’m driving up to Copake to pick up some @hamlet_hound canned cocktails. As a reminder… I’m still in NYC most of the time - two out of three kids are still in school down here. But I get up to Copake roughly once every ten days or so… more often in the summer when it’s busiest. Tonight’s drive felt like the beginning of summer… low light late into the evening, deer-friendly mist, scarce northbound traffic lit up by lots of southbound headlights…. Day 27/100: Moric Blaufrankish Reserve 2016. Dinner at @kolomannyc started with champagne then flor-tinged rosé from Clos Cibonne. And then a little aged Blaufrankish from @moric.wine . I have the Blaufrankish grape on the brain (for this, I lay all responsibility on @pascalinelepeltier ). And apparently it’s also in enough emails and spreadsheets that my phone now knows how to spell it. It’s a grape that goes in many different directions with its winning combination of fruit and spice and earth. Sometimes it’s fresh and fruity with a skootch of whole berry carbo in a Beaujolais vein. Or fancified with some time in oak where it does a turn as modern-ish pinot noir from a warm climate. If we’re getting more obscure, it’s like mencia but less peppery or barbera but more purple-y. There are so many “sort of-likes” that it can be tough to pinpoint. Then there’s this version that really shows off how the grape can age. There’s some mushroomy notes, well-tanned leather, a bit of truffle umami and dark, brooding fruit. To my mind, Moric’s Blaufrankish’s are about as classic as the grape gets and run the gamut (what, really, is a gamut??) from sneaky complex, to seriously sophisticated without trying to be “fancy”, to bottles like this – totally ageable and complex. #100daysproject #winelover #winestagram #foodandwine #whatidrank #habitformation #winewriting #winestudy #austrianwine #blaufrankish #blindtasting #foodandwine #winepairing #selfie #speedwriting #winetasting #tastingnotes #winewoman

Back in mid-March I took the @wsetglobal Level 1 wine test. It was a hard test indeed, but I passed. I just got the results from London and passed with a hard-fought 77%. After I took it, I said that if the test providers had allowed same-day walk-ins to come into the class, take the course, and then take the test, they would almost all likely fail. I only passed because I have a deep knowledge of whisky, with some overlapping knowledge passed over to wine with things such as fermentation, maturation, aging, etc., and the little time I had to study before taking the course. But it was probably that whisky knowledge and those alcoholic fermentation questions that put me over. I took a pre-test before the actual exam and got a 66% I believe, failing that by one point. When I pulled my test results out of the mailbox this morning, I said a prayer before opening them. I said, “Lord Jesus, I don’t want to use you as a sugar daddy just whenever I need something. I do pray that you allow me to pass this test, but if I am to fail, I accept the results in that it just wasn’t my time or will understand that more is required of me and I need to put more in. There is a lesson to be learned, even in failure. But if I do pass, the first thing I will do is shout you out and give you all the glory.” And the glory is His because I don’t know how I went from 66% on the practice exam to 77% on the actual exam just ten minutes later. After I took the test, I felt my score would be right around where it was on the practice test. I almost felt that prayer changed the results just before I opened the envelope because it was not my time to pass. It felt like divine intervention. Thank you Lord for allowing me to pass; it was with your grace. Day 26/100: Lune a Boire Orange L1920: I’m posting the day morning after the actual day… one of the first times I’ve done so this !00 Days. But really, is posting at 11PM day of any different than posting at 9AM the day after? No it’s not. And algorithm-wise, it’s actually better to post in the mornings. At least according to my particular algorithm. Anyway… onto the wine. This was a fun one – I poured it and drank it and didn’t really do a tech sheet excavation until this morning. The web site is in French, so my interpretation relies on google and my sketchy French lessons from many years back. Lune a Boire seems to be a micro-negoc in the Alsace, which is an undercover hotbed of biodynamic and organic grape growing and winemaking. Why is this region not at the epicenter of cool-kidness? That is an eternal question and probably a good @wsetglobal L4 D6 research paper topic. My guess is that it has to do quite a bit with the range of never-quite fashionable grapes. This wine is a blend of gewurtraminer and Sylvaner. “Sylvwhat?? Gewho?” Point made. The gewurtraminer has about a week of skin contact which gives the wine this very lovely orange hue. That skin contact also extracts all sorts of lovely flavors – it’s all sorts of peachy and blossomy (orange, peach, rose) and spicy – as well as a bit of bitter tannin which gives this low-acid wine a much needed spine. That combination of fleshy texture, bitter pink grapefruit pith, and oh my darling clementine skin – it’s pretty compelling. The wine is fairly high octane – like 14% abv. I had it with Thai Massaman curry (I was going for an all-orange dinner vibe) and it was a pretty terrible pairing. Heat in the food paired with heat in the wine amps up the overall heat. This is not a bad thing – it’s just chemistry and lets you choose your own adventure in heat. But the heat can amplify the wine’s bitterness and this one just didn’t have enough flesh to offset that amplification. So I had the food and then drank the wine. Problem solved!!!

Day 25/100: Poggio la Noce Gigetto 2015. Well this is a deep cut from the wine cooler! It’s from the days when I was dragging a rolly bag for dns and it’s been kicking around since. It’s had a pull or two of the @corivan and is none the worse for wear – so it’s an excellent advertisement for the fancy tool. So the wine… it’s from Tuscany and it has that lovely Tuscan sun-kissed character. 90% Sangiovese, the region’s star red grape and 5% Teroldego, which I normally associated with the cooler, northern, Alpine regions. The Sangiovese brings red fruits, cherry and a bit of plum to the mix and the Teroldego brings the darker versions. There’s orange rind and a bit of spice – like those old-school clove-studded oranges that would pop up around Christmas time. Teroldego also adds extra deep color and jacks up the tannins a bit. When I first pulled the wine out, it was a wee bit cold and those tannins were a bit jagged. But as it warmed up to something more like room temperature, it really starts to show it’s sun-kissed stuff. #100daysproject #winelover #winestagram #foodandwine #whatidrank #habitformation #winewriting #winestudy #tuscanwine #italianwine #tuscany #sangiovese #teroldego #selfie #speedwriting #winetasting #tastingnotes #winewoman

Would you like to enjoy wine more & make better wine choices? If you have been following recently you will know I’ve been reposting a series of simple wine rules to help you enjoy more, learn & explore wine better. I developed these rules when The Winefan started; Rules 1 - 5 were the basics; rules 6 - 10 dig deeper to help even more. Do you like this rule? Please ask me further questions or better still, join our newsletter & book one of my tasting events which are full of advice & tips like these!🥂 WINE RULE 10 - TAKE NOTES My passion for wines, my events & social media are all about encouraging you to enjoy wine, learning what you like, why you like it BUT encouraging you to try new things! How do you do this? Taking notes is the easiest way to remember what you DO & DON’T like but that doesn’t mean being geeky or snobbish, some of the ways are simple - I use all the methods below: ✅ Keep a simple list of details when you find a wine you enjoy; include name, grape, price & where you bought it (you can add more if you wish). ✅ Take a photo of the label & store on your phone. ✅ Use a tasting sheet when you try a wine (message me for an example). ✅ Create a wine notes scrapbook of your favourite wines (see photo). ✅ Try using an App like XX where you simply take a snap of the label & it searches for the wine, provides information & allows you to rate & store your wines with online ordering for some selections. Taking notes is easy, it will improve your knowledge of wine, helping you learn your favourites & when used with my other wine rules opens a world of discovery & enjoyment. Cheers 🍷 😀 Wine made easy & fun 📚 Wine education #thewinefan #winerules #winetasting #winestudy #wineadvice #wineknowledge #wineideas #wine #winelover #wineisanart

Exploring Marimar Estate: A Fusion of Spanish Grapes and California Terroir 🇪🇸🇺🇲 Founded by Marimar Torres, a member of the fourth generation of the renowned Torres family, Marimar Estate Vineyards and Winery is a testament to passion, heritage, and a deep commitment to sustainability. Nestled in Sonoma County's cool and foggy Green Valley, near the Russian River Valley, Marimar discovered an old apple orchard that would become the 56-acre Don Miguel Vineyard, named after her father. Initially focusing on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Marimar has since introduced Spanish grape (Albariño, Tempranillo, and Godello) varieties to the estate, creating a diverse and exceptional range of wines. This introduction marks the beginning of a journey into the world of Marimar Estate, where organic practices, family legacy, and a dedication to crafting extraordinary wines converge. Albariño 2021 Available from @vinvm.co.uk @thesecretcellar @londonendwines - RRP £35 Honeysuckle, pear, and stone fruit. What i absolutely love about this wine is its classic minerality. Nothing beats licking a wet stone! Full of Californian sunshine 🌞🪨 Godello 2021 (first release was 2020, so relatively new to Marimar) The use of concrete egg vessels gives this wine a real texture of juicy blood orange and orchard fruits. Slight floral notes 🌸🍊 Tempranillo 2017 The Secret Cellar – RRP: £50 Beautiful Garnet cherry colour, full of rich berries and plums. Spicy, gamey, and earthy with vanilla and coffee ☕️🍦 A celebration of Spanish heritage, sustainable practices, and a commitment to crafting exceptional wines in the unique terroir of Sonoma County ❤️ Fantastic to enjoy a live feed with Cristina Torres and Founder, Marimar Torres from the comfort of my own home and see Neil from my local wine specialist Secret Cellar pop up! Cheers! 🍇🍷 @limmpr @marimarestate #posingwithalcohol #californiawine #californiawines #napawine #californiawinecountry #sonomawine

Day 24/100: Art & Science Wickson Cider. I very nicely apple-y apple cider. I love it when a hard cider tastes exactly like an apple – and not some sort of confected imaginary version of an apple. This is 100% Wickson variety apples and a little background research confirms that it’s a cider-variety: lots of sugar, heaps of acidity, and a nice tannic snap. All this means excellent balance of sugar, tanginess and spice. It’s barrel aged for about 10 months and has just the slightest bit of earthy funk, as if the apple had been bitten into and left to kick around on the country for just an hour or so. Just enough to keep it interesting. I am not a fan of hugely funky ciders. It’s a style that I just can’t into. But this sort of cider, the translates that prefect apple-ness into a kicky hard version? Oh yes… this I like? And on a not-wine note… this frozen shoulder situation makes it tough to take photo. The arm angles required to get my angles don’t work quite so well. Ouch. #100daysproject #winelover #winestagram #foodandwine #whatidrank #habitformation #winewriting #winestudy #hardcider #cider #singlevarietycider #selfie #speedwriting #winetasting #tastingnotes #winewoman #frozenshoulder

Day 23/100 Philippe Vandelle Cremant du Jura Rose. Once upon a time, well, probably about 12 years ago or so, I was very up on my Jura knowledge. But so much has happened in since then – new producers… so many new producers! And hybrids!! There are hybrid grapes happening! – that I need to step back and pretty much re-learn everything. But not tonight. For tonight, it’s a classic rose cremant from the Etoile subregion. 100% pinot noir, but less on the fruity/juicy side – it has that sort of iron-tinged edge that I more often associate with the pretty-much-unique-to-the-region poulsard grape. I’ve had the whites fairly recently but it’s been a while since I’ve had a red… which even at their deepest, most concentrated, are still quite transparent and almost rose-like in their color. But this sparkling is an actual rose. And a reminder that I need to be drinking more Jura reds. @domaine_philippe_vandelle #100daysproject #winelover #winestagram #foodandwine #whatidrank #habitformation #winewriting #winestudy #sparklingwine #cremant #bubbles #pinotnoir #jurawine #juraduty #selfie #speedwriting #winetasting #tastingnotes #winewoman #womanowned

I got so inspired by last week’s #malbec celebrations that I’ve decided to review another Malbec but not the malbec you know. #malbecblanco or #whitemalbec is a #whitewine made of red grape variety, no skin contact obviously. A relatively new style of malbec from Argentina. This one is from the same #winemaker @salenteinbodega , Valle de Uco, Vintage 2022. Light and crisp, it opens up with floral aromas of peach blossom and a slight hint of herbaceous notes of asparagus and then evolves into aromas of yellow and stone fruit, yellow pear, quince, nectarine, peach, melon, followed by tropical notes of passion fruit and a touch of pineapple. A perfect summer wine! #wine #winesoftheworld #winebar #winebars #winetours #winetasting #wineappreciation #wineissharing #winestudy #winestudent #invinoveritas #wineisart #wineispoetry #wine #winelover #wineday #wineisapoeminaglass #wineoftheweek #wineworld #wineblogger #argentinianwine
