If you were ever curious to understand what Natural Wine is or isn’t, Real Wine Fair (London) is the place to be. My first visit two years ago was an eye opener to the many different types and styles of ‘natural’ wine to taste, AND much to my surprise it included several wineries I had never realised were making natural wines. What is natural wine? I am no expert, but here is what I have learned. There are many interpretations as well as misconceptions: -> the term may be trendy, but the methods are ancient ~ it all started over 6,000 BC when Georgian buried their Quevri (clay amphora 🏺) to ferment grape juice. -> nothing artificial is added to the grape growing or winemaking process -> natural winemaking aims to express essence of wine without interference -> zero to low use of sulphites (which is used at bottling wine to prevent oxidation) -> It can be cloudy or have sediment forgoing filtration or clarification - this can continue to add flavour to the wine as it evolves in the bottle - which makes it both a bit unpredictable and hence exciting -> Not all organic wine is natural, but all natural wine is made with organically or biodynamically grown grapes -> “Each natural wine is as unique as its terroir and fermentation techniques” ie there are so many expressions of natural wines from all around the world. Taylors Wines and Tahbilk, with their extensive efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, can’t go unmentioned. And manufacturers like DIAM are also actively taking steps to reduce energy consumption through the production process, while leaning heavily into renewable and natural resources to produce bottle closures.🍾 Constellation Brands say that “48 percent of consumers will deliberately switch to a brand that is more sustainable” and their Round Theory Wines are a solid case study of efforts to make and sell a more environmentally sound product. They come in distinct bottles that are 30% lighter, 35% shorter and made from clear glass to be more readily recyclable. ♻️ The packaging is made from recyclable aluminium and plastics and the label from recycled paper. The wine is made using sustainably farmed grapes from accredited vineyards, and Round Theory (via a partnership) offsets double its carbon emissions produced in carbon credits.🍷 Climate change is impacting and shaping today’s wine industry. 2007 Pichon Lalande 4 / 5 and ready to drink! Ruby, the nose of the 2007 Pichon Lalande is all about dark fruits - classic blackcurrants, plums, cassis and cedar. The palate has the prior notes but is enhanced with sweet spices, think cinnamon and nutmeg. The body isn't the biggest, med plus from my notes and acid is also med plus. Tannins are also surprisingly soft for the Left Bank and I probably ranked this at a med to med plus. 20s finish which is much more about elegance than power. Comparatively a 1995 I tasted last year was much more withholding and tannic. I was fortunate enough to taste Meg's Cab for the first time in December. I enjoyed it then, and revisiting, I am still a fan! When she opened this during the podcast, I was going to ask, "How does one go about making a lighter Cab, and getting under 13% is unheard of for a Cab?"
