Last night I saw “The Long Game” which is based on a true story about a Mexican American high school golf team that goes from having to craft their own golf course (due to racism and segregation) to winning the Texas High School State Championship in 1957. I love a good sports underdog story and this one did not disappoint. The cinematography is beautiful and the casting was excellent. Starring Jay Hernandez and Dennis Quaid (who is in all sorts of feel-good, clean movies lately). Apparently this is based on a book called Mustang Miracle by Humberto Garcia- which I’d love to read. Enemy Mine (1985) Fun Film 11/13 A film about two enemies, from two different species, forced to work together. Not a new idea, but there are a few twists in this humble little film that make it feel fresh. Despite the obvious allusions to American history, the space setting creates the sense of being a spectator of a story rather than the audience of a lecture on racism. The plot can be a bit clumsy and has a bit of an odd pacing to it but there is enough suspense and depth to keep a viewer invested. This is not the typical eighties sci-fi film packed full of lasers, makeup and space battles and that is its charm. Lee Ermey, Ted Levine, William Fichtner และเรายังจะได้เจอกับ Jared Leto และ Walton Goggins สมัยยังละอ่อนอีกด้วย ซึ่งแต่ละคนก็ทำหน้าที่ได้ดีครับ เล่นได้สมบทบาท และมีส่วนช่วยให้หนังน่าติดตามไม่น้อย ส่วนการเล่าเรื่องนั้นผมถือว่าอยู่ในระดับโอเคครับ ช่วงต้นเรื่องอาจยังไม่น่าติดตามนัก ต้องรอจนถึงครึ่งหลังพอเรารู้อะไรๆ มากพอแล้ว ความน่าติดตามก็เริ่มมา ซึ่งหนังกำกับและเขียนบทโดย Jeb Stuart ซึ่งนี่เป็นงานกำกับชิ้นแรกของเขาด้วยครับ ก็ต้องถือว่าใช้ได้ล่ะครับ แม้อะไรๆ อาจไม่ลงตัวกลมกล่อมไปเสียทั้งหมด แต่ก็ถือว่าผ่านเกณฑ์ ถ้าถามว่าผมชอบอะไรที่สุดในหนังเรื่องนี้ ผมยกให้การแสดงดีๆ ของเหล่าดาราทุกคน โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง R. Hier ist meine Review zu "Der weiße Hai 3": Schwachsinn, Langeweile und Tierquälerei in 3D. Alle schimpfen immer auf den vierten Teil der Jaws Reihe. Ja, der Film hat das wohl dümmste Drehbuch der Horrorgeschichte, aber verglichen mit diesem schäbigen dritten Teil, hat der vierte Teil immerhin viel Trash Entertainment auf Lager. Der weiße Hai 3 hingegen kommt aus einer Zeit, in der 3D voll der Bringer war. Und damals wie heute war das 3D ein Geschwür und extrem schädigend für die wahre Filmkunst. Der Film ist hässlich, langweilig und extrem unangenehm in seiner Darstellung. Seaworld - ein riesiges Aquarium direkt an Floridas Küste steht kurz vor der Neueröffnung, als sich ein weißer Hai in das falsche Schwimmbecken verirrt. Während manche Leute die Tötung des Tieres ins Fernsehen übertragen wollen, sind andere Leute der Ansicht, dass sie das Tier behalten und pflegen sollten. Noch ahnt keiner die Konsequenzen aus dieser Entscheidung, die schon bald den gesamten Park einholen werden. Ich musste schon ein wenig mit den Zähnen knirschen, diesem Film überhaupt eine Plattform zu geben, denn er glorifiziert Wale und Delfine in Gefangenschaft und propagiert diese Tierquälerei als etwas ganz Tolles. Einer der Gründe weshalb ich nie eine Kritik zu Free Willy machen würde. Nun stammt der Film aus einer anderen Zeit und zum Glück nimmt diese Thematik nicht so viel Platz ein. Das eigentlich Thema? Gute Frage, denn ein Plot ist hier nicht erkennbar. Die Effekte sind unbeschreiblich schlecht und sehen unanschaubar aus und die meiste Zeit herrscht Langweile. Offenbar war kein wirkliches Drehbuch vorhanden, denn außer, dass ein Hai angreift, passiert in diesem gähnenden Mist nichts.
‘Undercover Blues’ is a really fun crime comedy from 1993 directed by Herbert Ross that I watched a bunch in the 90’s and has held up pretty well. Dennis Quaid and Kathleen Turner are both great as spies trying to take a vacation with their new baby in New Orleans but keep finding trouble including an incompetent thief and an international arms deal. Hollywood presses the “make a feel-good sports movie” button every once in a while so we can get the “very promising story but doesn’t quite fulfill its potential” every time. What caught my attention the most is the inspirational montage music, feels more like a greatest hits of past underdog films than anything else, leaving one with a taste of reheated comfort food. The narrative leans heavily on predictable Disney tropes – it’s hard not to yearn for a bit more nuance. The true story certainly deserves powerful telling, but this felt like a sanitized version—kind of missing the opportunity to really capture the grit and complexity of the journey of these young men. Erstaunlicherweise erlaubten mir meine Eltern den Kinobesuch, allein mit Freunden an einem Mittwochnachmittag und noch erstaunlicher war, dass ich tatsächlich eine Karte ausgehändigt bekam, trotz FSK 16 Freigabe. Als später DIE REISE INS ICH (1987) in den Kinos anlief, hatte ich das erforderliche Alter von 12 Jahren bereits erreicht und stattete auch diesem Film einen Besuch ab. Es war Liebe auf den ersten Blick, weswegen ich gleich dreimal mein Taschengeld für einen Kinobesuch der turbulenten Komödie ausgab. Mildly heartwarming and plays it safe. 5/10. I had no idea what this movie was until after I left the theatre. I don’t think, or don’t remember the title popping up so it was the most mysterious Monday mystery movie ever lol. I looked up Dennis Quaid after. The movie’s alright, very predictable sports-underdog storyline and touching on expected racial and cultural themes from its time period setting. The characters were very typical which made their actions predictable. You always know how the story’s gonna end up. Visually it was pretty vibrant and colorful. The movies down to earth and lighthearted, though only mildly heartwarming. Centered around golf, a sport that never piqued my interest despite my dad’s attempts, the movie still managed to entertain me, largely due to its comedic relief, this mostly came from the sarcastic groundskeeper character. Other than that the movie doesn’t reinvent the wheel and is just another underdog sports story. While it’s not necessarily bad, it lacks much distinctiveness to make it feel special, doesn’t have as much character depth as other movies, and high stakes. A recent underdog story that was more memorable for me was “the boys in the boat” and it kept crossing my mind. In that movie you get to know the characters a lot, while this was played it safe. Leaves a lot unexplored and to be desired. It’s also not peaky, it doesn’t build up to the big game so the climax feels pretty non-existent.
