A trip down the bottle isle is A LOT. 🍼🍼 There are so many choices 🍼🍼 Choosing a bottle can feel overwhelming, but the best place to start is by watching your baby. Here are four things to consider: 🍼 Acceptance There are lots of variations of shape, size, and material of bottle brands and some babies might have a preference. The best bottle is one your baby will accept! 🍼 Flow Rate The level or age range advertised is not always the best way to determine the best fit. Watch your baby for signs. Gulping, coughing, dribbling, pulling away can show the flow is too fast. Prolonged feeds, fussiness, or lots of sucking with little intake can be signs it is too slow. 🍼 Accessibility and Affordability Just because a bottle is expensive or frequently advertised does not mean it is the best or only fit for you baby. It can be easy to attribute mealtime challenges to what a child is or is not doing. They’re being picky, they aren’t eating enough, they aren’t staying at the table, etc. etc. However, I encourage you to look inward and consider your own expectations. Do you expect them to eat a certain amount when they may not be hungry? To sit quietly at the table when they’re bored? To try new foods that scare them? Once you know why you expect certain behaviors, you can manage your own expectations while also working towards making mealtime fun and successful for children.

🌟 Mouth Mapping 🌟 Oral exploration is very important to developing appropriate eating skills. Oral exploration aides in mouth mapping which is needed for oral awareness. Knowing the boundaries of the mouth, moving the gag reflex, and understanding the relationship between all the structures of the mouth (lips, tongue, gums, teeth) is imperative for safe and effective chewing and eating. Children need to be able to manage food safely in their mouth as they add new foods with different textures and consistencies to their diet. Therefore, in relation to my previous post… not all oral seeking behaviors are “bad” or need to be eliminated. We just want to ensure all oral seeking behaviors as well as mouth mapping is done in safe and healthy ways!
