The film tells the story of a heartbroken woman who floats over an industrial wasteland and sings ballads of love after her boyfriend (Nicolas Cage) leaves her. Made before the unprecedented success of his cult-classic TV show Twin Peaks, it is the footage from an original play which was presented at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1989. The experimental work is named after a series of complex mosaics in geometric shapes designed by Lynch. He made them while he was studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and called them Industrial Symphonies.

It was originally performed twice on stage at the Brooklyn Academy of Music as a part of the New Music America Festival on November 10, 1989. The experimental work is named after a series of complex mosaics in geometric shapes designed by Lynch. He made them while he was studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and called them Industrial Symphonies. The play starred frequent Lynch collaborators such as Laura Dern, Nicolas Cage and Michael J. Anderson, and contained five songs sung by Julee Cruise. Many of the songs from the musical were recycled in Twin Peaks, including two of Julee’s recordings “Rockin’ Back Inside My Heart” and “The World Spins”. In 1990, Lynch produced a 50 minute video for release on VHS and contained footage from the performance in 1989. While minimal, constant gradual changes in tone, timbre & prominence in each layer plus some irregular rhythms keep the attention going, yet never becomes strained. It is more of a wall of sound; some may deplore the lack of dynamics, aka loudness war. I consider it rather an embrace and immersion. It is unobtrusive and despite the beats not attention grabbing, and still has lots of details and minor variations. The record works equally well as background music and for focussed listening. . This thought was confirmed after I read the interview with Hans Zimmer in the ‘Patch & Tweak’ book by Kim Bjørn: “Scoring with the modular started out because Hans could not afford to pay real musicians and to get more voices he just needed to add more oscillators and filters. Though, he jokes that it is cheaper to feed a bunch of oscillators that a bunch of musicians.” „It was enough voices to do the stuff that was going on in my head. I grew up in a very traditional German music tradition and the thing I could not under- stand was why orchestras were not expanding their sound palette by including more synthesizers.” Hans Zimmer /Patch & Tweak We all know the roots of modern music come from the classical compositions of big names like Beethoven, Satie, Mozart, etc. However, the culture is changing and our ears are being trained for a new synthetic sound. This is where the modern spirit brings us. When you are united with the machines they play according to your mood: sometimes gentle, sometimes fierce. While I was recording the tracks for ‘Industrial Symphony’, I was able to extract very orchestral sounds from my modular synth system. Industrial Symphony No. 1 (David Lynch, 1990) Definitely one of the most criminally underrated exerperiments of Lynch’s career, a 50 minute long music-video/avant-garde musical, made to promote the debut album of Julee Cruise (Produced by Lynch himself alongside his collaborator and composer Angelo Badalamenti, who I’ve been criminally neglectful in failing to mention as his music is often pivotal to many of the director’s greatest works). It’s definitely Lynch’s most inherently theatrical project, opening after a brief conversation between two troubled lovers played by Nicholas Cage and Laura Dern (Who’d go on to play the romantic leads in Lynch’s Wild at Heart) before turning into a bizarre stage show of industrial machinery, flashing lights, and mesmerising musical numbers from Cruise herself. Check it out if you can, it’s a wonderful highlight of how Lynch was a brilliant music composer, alongside a highly influential director.
