Lake District Day 3: Eskdale to Buttermere. This was a tough one. 14+ miles and 3200 feet of climbing. It wasn't just how much up/down, but rather how we did it. Much of the day was spent in steep heavily rutted rock-filled trails or trying to find the driest way through bogs filled by recent rains. Add to that more rain and heavy winds in the uplands, and it was an epic hike. Thank goodness for the young lambs gamboling in the fields at the end. 📍 Martindale Horseshoe, Lake District 🥾 Back in the lakes after ticking off some 2024 hiking goals (Ben Nevis, Snowdon) and what better way to do it than bagging 10 new Wainwrights! 💪🏻 This set is from our Saturday hike round the Martindale Horseshoe, a 24km circular route around the Eastern Fells. Relentless uphill early on, and then gradually ascending to 780m where you’re rewarded with beautiful views of Ullswater lake down the valley from the top. If you are ever heading towards Keswick in the Lake District along the A66, you must visit here. Every time we head this way, we pass it but have never stopped. The day we arrived recently it was blowing a hooley, so we pitched up @basecampnorthlakes for some refuge. We enjoyed delicious carrot and orange soup and cheese scones. This would be perfect at the end of a long hike. It was so inviting with a fire on the go, and a cute farm shop, where you could pick up local produce. Incident No.44 of 2024, on 27th April Type: Full Callout Location: Screes Start: 14:33 Finish: 18:53 Duration: 4h 20m Weather: Dry, sunny Teams involved: 14 Wasdale MRT Grid Reference: NY154047 A call was received from Cumbria Police about a party of four walkers (in two separate groups) attempting to walk around Wast Water. However, one of the walkers was struggling to negotiate the boulder field and felt they could not continue in either direction. A full callout was made and a shore party and boat team were tasked to help. On arrival, one group of two had reversed their route to easier ground back to Wasdale Head, and the others were transferred by boat to the pump house at the western end of the lake to complete their walk. #BeAdventureSmart and make a good day better.
