Diet Changes for Menopause During menopause, dietary adjustments help manage symptoms. Prioritize calcium-rich foods for bone health, omega-3 fatty acids to stabilize mood, and phytoestrogens from soy products to combat hot flashes. Reducing caffeine and spicy foods may decrease night sweats. Grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables bolster overall health, with fiber aiding digestion. A balanced diet, coupled with increased hydration and fiber, supports overall wellness during the menopausal transition. Waking up after a night sweat can leave you feeling exhausted and out of sorts. It's totally normal and while it's a inconvenience throwing off and putting back on the blankets, there's no need to stress! During perimenopause, night sweats are caused by an imbalance of oestrogen and progesterone which stimulates the body, so the body responds by sweating to cool down. You're not alone in this. Many women experience night sweats! The good news: there are ways to manage them and get a better night's sleep. Here's a few helpful tips: Dress your bed with layers you can throw off and pull back on so you don't end up with a chill. Aim for a consistently cooler room, maybe keep a window open (this is good sleeping hygiene for everyone as we get into a deeper REM sleep). Avoid caffeine, sugar, spicy foods and alcohol as they raise the body's temperature for a few hours after consuming. Life can be full and stressful, and your body's response can be to sweat. When you worry at night it can become a trigger for night sweats, so finding a relaxing nighttime routine can be very helpful. As you can see what we eat and what we do can have a big impact on how severe night sweats are. Are you having any other symptoms of menopause? Comment NIGHT below and and reply with my natural tips to support you. Ingredients 11/2 cups pitted raw dates 1/2 cup crunchy almond butter 1/2 cup chopped raw pumpkin seeds 1/2 cup chopped raw walnuts 1/2 cup chopped Brazil nuts 2 tbsp chia seeds 2 tbsp ground flax 2 tbsp hemp seeds 2 tsp sea salt 1 tbsp local raw runny honey 1 cup melted dark organic chocolate chips Instructions -Add all the ingredients, apart from the chocolate into a food processor and blend until combined and formed into a sticky ball. -Line a 9ā€x9ā€ pan with parchment paper. -Using hands dampened with water, press the date ball into the pan. The water on you hands stops them from sticking to the date bars. -Melt the chocolate in a bowl over a pan of simmering water or gently in the microwave. -Spread the chocolate evenly over the date mix and place the the pan in the freezer for 30 minutes to set. =Remove the bars from the freezer and cut into 12 squares. Stress may be defined as any situation that tends to disturb the equilibrium between us and our environment.Ā  In day-to-day life, there are many stressful situations such as stress of work pressure, examinations, psychosocial stress, and physical stresses due to trauma, surgery, and various medical disorders. Stress causes the body to release the hormone cortisol, which is produced by the adrenal glands. Cortisol is important to blood pressure regulation and the normal functioning of several body systems. Excess cortisol alone can contribute to high blood pressure, mood changes, low libido, weight gain, and irregular periods. But, a prolonged stress response can also interfere with other hormones, including testosterone, oestrogen, and progesterone. In women, one common way that stress affects the body is by causing hormonal imbalances. A hormonal imbalance occurs as a result of having too little or too much of a particular hormone in the bloodstream. If you are currently using HRT to manage your perimenopause and menopause journey, then this is ā€œsupplementingā€ your own levels. When you experience stress, trauma, illness, or other upsetting events, then your naturally occurring oestrogen and testosterone levels will reduce rapidly, thereby reducing your overall levels even whilst taking supplementation.Ā  Studies have shown that younger women experiencing symptoms of perimenopause or menopause often tend to need higher levels of estradiol (and therefore usually higher doses of HRT) than older women do. Ok, ladies, I know this is a strong statement, but hear me out. It is not uncommon for women in their 40s and 50s to suddenly feel like their world is very different. Many of us start to experience anxiety, night sweats and hot flashes, sleep disturbances, heavy periods, mood swings, weight gain, lack of motivation, overwhelm, and fatigue. We feel like a different person; all the "things" that used to help us cope with life's daily stressors no longer work, and to top it off, the cardio and dieting that used to help us stay in shape doesn't seem to be working anymore. Everything is different. This, my friends, is where many women start to "feel stuck" and keep repeating the same patterns that used to work. Worse, they try more extreme measures, like fad diets, cleanses, and crazy exercise plans. The problem is that what used to work no longer benefits us at this stage of life. It is time to break the cycle and start a new pattern of behavior. This begins with the desire to understand that we must adopt a healthier lifestyle. It is no longer about eating less, exercising more, and putting sleep on the back burner to get things done. Instead, we need to prioritize sleep, learn to manage our stress (reduce it when possible), and eat and move in a way that nourishes our body instead of causing stress, hormone imbalances, and inflammation. My 1:1 coaching program is designed to help women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s become fit, vibrant, energized, healthy, and confident. The best part is that it is developed around sustainable habits that will bring about positive changes that last a lifetime. Menopause naturally occurs as aging ovaries produce less estrogen and progesterone, vital for reproduction. This hormonal shift marks the end of a woman's reproductive years. Other causes include surgical removal of ovaries, chemotherapy, or radiation. Some may experience premature menopause due to genetic factors or autoimmune diseases. Some medications and medical conditions, like pituitary gland disorders or thyroid disease, can induce early menopause. Additionally, lifestyle choices, including poor diet, stress, excessive smoking, and alcohol consumption, can also play a role in determining its onset. Confused about what's happening to your body? You're not alone! Perimenopause, the lead-up to menopause, can bring some unexpected changes. This post is your guide to figuring it out: Wondering if you're perimenopausal? Here are some signs to watch for: šŸ‘‰ Irregular periods: Periods can become shorter, longer, or even skip months altogether. šŸ‘‰ Hot flashes (but not just!): Night sweats, trouble sleeping, and mood swings are also common. šŸ‘‰ Brain fog: Feeling forgetful or having trouble concentrating can be a frustrating symptom. šŸ‘‰ Changes in your body: You might experience weight gain, dry skin, or changes in your breasts. Wondering what tests your doctor might recommend?šŸ‘Øā€āš•ļø šŸ‘‰ FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone) Test: This blood test measures levels of FSH, which can be elevated during perimenopause. šŸ‘‰ AMH (Anti-MĆ¼llerian Hormone) Test: This blood test can indicate your ovarian reserve and remaining eggs.šŸ©ø (Note: AMH levels naturally decline with age, and a low level doesn't necessarily mean perimenopause.) šŸ‘‰ Thyroid test: Thyroid problems can mimic some perimenopause symptoms, so your doctor might check your thyroid function. šŸ‘‰ Estradiol Test: This blood test measures estrogen levels, which fluctuate during perimenopause.šŸ©ø While not a definitive test, some home testing kits claim to detect perimenopause. It's important to discuss these with your doctor to understand their limitations and accuracy. Fake smiling has a lousy effect on your mood, whereas real smiling is good for it. Researchers investigated the effects of fake smiling, known as ā€œsurface acting,ā€ compared to genuine smiles produced through positive thoughts, known as "deep acting." They found that on days when the smiles were forced, the subjectsā€™ moods deteriorated and they tended to withdraw from work. Trying to suppress negative thoughts, it turns out, may have made those thoughts even more persistent. It can be good medicine to get real about stuff rather than to grin and bear it. That's exactly what we plan to do in our next Menopause Chronicles session on June 5 with Dr. Claudia Welch and special guest Rose Baudin. Menopause is a natural biological event marking the end of a woman's menstrual cycles and fertility. Caused by a decline in hormones like estrogen and progesterone, it's typically confirmed after 12 months without periods. Common symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, and mood changes. Menopause, while a natural phase, can sometimes cause certain complications. The decline in estrogen contributes to osteoporosis, increasing fracture risk. It also elevates the potential for cardiovascular disease due to altered heart health dynamics. Additionally, vaginal atrophy becomes common, causing dryness and discomfort. Women also experience hot flashes, marked by sweating and flushing, along with mood swings and weight gain. Understanding these challenges is crucial for preventive care during the post-menopausal years. Is it time to ditch the Period Cup? Let's talk periods. No, seriously, let's talk about those monthly visits from Aunt Flo that are starting to resemble a surprise visit from your whacky Aunt Mildred ā€“ unpredictable, intense, and leaving you wondering if you locked the back door. Here's the truth bomb: This doesn't mean you're "getting old" (because hello: J.Lo, Madonna, Jane Fonda). This is a powerful transformation, a chance to shed the old and embrace the awesome you. And what else might you be shedding? Maybe that trusty cup you've been rocking since your "grunge is life" days. Listen, menstrual cups are amazing, but during perimenopause and menopause, your flow might have other plans. The real question is, why is this conversation even taboo? Periods are a natural part of life, and so are the changes that come with perimenopause and menopause. It's time to ditch the shame and embrace the shift. I love the washable options that are available now, but not so much when I was 13. Flow undies all the way! This is YOUR journey, and there's no one-size-fits-all solution, but with knowledge and self-care exploration, you can equip yourself to rock this transformation, and I'm here to help. Go binge-listen to the ā€œNot Your Motherā€™s Menopauseā€ podcast if you wanna hear the truth from someone who isnā€™t afraid to hold back. #podcaster #podcasting #menopausecommunity #perimenopausesupport #podcastforwomeninmidlife #womenswellnesswisdom #perimenopausefitness

Periodsā€¦ In 2022 I had a horrific time with symptoms, the symptom that started putting the piece together for it being a hormonal issue was my period changes. My periods since having my son were heavy every month, it seemed to just start after his birth, heavy horrible painful periods. But they were regular. Then as the months went by, I started having clots, but not small ones, HUGE clots, bigger than golf balls. My periods were still also regular but they changed because they started being a few days late or 5 days early etc. I also noticed that I started spotting about 5 days before my chaotically heavy period began. These were things that were new and had never happened before. But, I was still having some sort of period every month. I saw a few gynaes, but one of them was a female private Leeds gynae, I told her all my symptoms, she said well youā€™ve had lots of tests already Jade, I think we need to start considering that this is anxiety. - this devastated me. Anxiety!? Iā€™m getting huge clots every month because of anxiety!?! She really crushed me, and I feel sad that she can get away with still practicing and treating patients like that. Then, I went to a male private gynae in Leeds, who had a better bedside manner to an extentā€¦ although, when I showed him a photo of one of the clots Iā€™d passed he looked at my partner and said ā€˜wow what a massacre eh!!ā€™ And started laughing? As if this was a laughing matter? He looked at my low estrogen results at the time and brushed them off, said donā€™t worry about those, youā€™re fine! Very fertile! šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø I later discovered he wasnā€™t BMS accredited so it was a waste of time showing him those results. He told me I needed surgery to check my insides and make sure it wasnā€™t endo. We did the op a couple of weeks later and he obviously found nothing. Because my clots and other symptoms were hormonalā€¦ something heā€™d earlier brushed off and something youā€™d never find during a laparoscopy surgery. When I went for my checkup and biopsy results, he told me I was ā€˜normalā€™ and discharged me? This post is to highlight, that you CAN still be having periods and have hormone problem. You know your body best! šŸ’šŸ©ø

Meet Tisna Westerhof a Dutch, London based visual artist working across socially engaged, participatory, and traditional decorative arts. While her practice is grounded in printmaking, she likes exploring and breaking down the limitations of materials, reinventing traditional handicrafts as a personal, political & poetic tool to address both activism & ā€˜inner-vismā€™. Tisna uses her voice in textiles, ceramics, installation, painting & printmaking as well as organizing, curating & collaborating with others. All are interconnected and attempt to give voice to the underrepresented, finding inclusive ways to talk about art that is relevant and builds empathy, to close social, racial & gender gaps. Tisna has a BA of Fine Art in Education, studied Printmaking at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague and obtained a Masters in Scenography at Central St Martins (UCL) . Her work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, The Dutch Centre and Whitechapel Gallery. She is co-founder and director of hARTslane gallery, London. Tisnaā€™s current retrospective exhibition at Lieu dā€™Art Contemporain in Sigean, France, also features the ā€˜The Womenā€™s Quilt of Prideā€™. Supported by Arts Council, the year long paticipatory textile project, engaging more than 50 women based in the UK and in France accumilated in two large quilts telling stories of womanhood, aspiration, resistance and celebration. @tisnawesterhof #menopause #menopauseawareness #menopausecommunity #perimenopauselikeaboss #perimenopause
