When the alarm goes off, say “potty time!” and race the kids (safely) to the potty. Ezra Rose and Beau were SO excited about this experience and it certainly didn’t disappoint. They had the best time searching for the perfect strawberries - it was a family adventure I’ll never forget! Strawberrry season is about half way over, so you’ll want to plan your trip soon. PSA 👉🏼 "You're so smart" isn't a compliment you want to keep giving your toddler on a regular basis 🤭 Research shows that mainly focusing on praising outcomes like "Great job!" or fixed traits like "You're so smart!" "Look how talented you are!" reinforces pressure to perform for others and creates extrinsic motivation. It also creates a label that children then try to live up to and feel discouraged if they don't deem themselves "doing a good job."👏 I still catch myself saying “You’re so smart!” to my toddler from time to time AND I’m not too worried about it. I’m more focused on creating moments to comment on the skills he is learning and the effort he is putting in. I try to narrate what I’m seeing “You figured out where the puzzle pieces go. Awesome!” What we put our focus on grows! When we express to our children that their actions and efforts are noticed, their self-esteem soars and we reinforce the behavior! Who doesn't like being recognized, especially when you've been working hard? ❤️ Toddlers are no exception. Praise can be a really effective way to reinforce the behavior you want to see in your little one. So when they follow through with something you've been discussing, praise their process and give specific feedback! It will support the development of the intrinsic motivation to keep working hard. WHY IS TOILET LEARNING SUCH A 💩 SHOW?! I watched too many friends and acquaintances get entirely too stressed out over ditching diapers and using the toilet. They were made to believe there is an 'optimal' time to toilet learn...and if a child "misses their window" it will be "harder" to train later. Talk about a load of 💩. Loves...it's not that deep. When the child is ready...they'll do it. (For the most part) OFC there are exceptions to the rule (like kids who struggle with interoception and reading their internal cues). Those kids need extra time to get it (and usually a pretty clear and predictable routine). But for the vast majority of kids, they will toilet learn spontaneously (i.e., show interest spontaneously and organically initiate the process) somewhere between 2.5yrs and 3.5 years. Some kids are ready at 18mos. Some kids aren't ready until closer to 4yrs. Many kids don't master it right away. Some never have accidents. Some prefer to poo in the potty. Say your child has come home from school or daycare, and they are GRUMPY. Whining, fussing about everything, you can’t seem to make them happy. Sometimes they’re just tired (HELLO early bedtime) but sometimes, they’re really wanting to connect and they don’t know how to ask. Connected Play, sometimes called “Special Time” (developed by Sheila Eyberg in the 1970s) is a unique kind of play because you give your child your undivided attention and enter their world, on their terms. So you’re not checking your phone or attempting to cook dinner at the same time. And if you’re thinking this sounds unrealistic (fair! We all have so many things we are all trying to do all at once!) the good news is that you only need to engage in this kind of play for ⭐️10-15 minutes⭐️ for it to have an impact. 👉🏻The key is to tailor the kind of play activities to what YOUR unique child loves to do. For example, my little girl is very physical, so roughhousing play is her absolute favourite. 10-15 minutes of physical play and she is GOOD, her whole mood will turn around. My boy is more “cerebral” (ooooh that sounds so pretentious, I hate it) but what I mean is that he loves to be thinking, asking questions, pondering life (lol). So right now his favourite thing to do is to colour and “have a talk”. I wouldn’t usually consider colouring to be an ideal form of Connected Play (it fits more in the Directed category), BUT because we talk a lot while we do it, it is a very connecting activity for us. WHAT YOU NEED • 2 hard boiled eggs • 1 ripe avocado • 2 slices sprouted grain bread • 2 tbsp. olive tapenade • cilantro leaves, to serve • microgreens, to serve (optional) WHAT YOU NEED TO DO Boil the eggs for 7 mins, if needed. Toast the bread. Remove the pit and flesh of the avocado and cut it into slices. Cut the eggs into quarters. Spread the tapenade over the bread and top with the avocado and egg.
