Tummy time isn’t just important- it’s essential for a baby’s development. 👶 As babies pick up new patterns of movement, it stimulates the brain to begin new processes, forming exciting neural pathways. As the two work in tandem, babies acquire the physical and mental skills/reflexes that will carry them throughout life. 🔄 If a baby struggles with tummy time, they may have Torticollis- a kind of stiffness and tension in their neck and back muscles. 💢 This presents a challenge for caregivers because no one wants to see their baby uncomfortable- but, without tummy time, they may miss out on developmental milestones. ⚖️ That’s why ICST is such an exciting therapy! 💆♀️ With a gentle touch, you can “unwind” the tension in a baby’s spinal muscles, increasing their range of movement. 18 months of loving you ❤️ I can’t quite believe Thomas is 18 months, it feels like he’s only just turned 1 😅 He’s finally walking and it’s his absolute favourite thing to do now. High blood pressure in pregnancy High blood pressure (Hypertension) is a common complication in pregnancy, affecting approximately 10-15% of pregnant women. High blood pressure can cause complications for mothers and babies in pregnancy, so early recognition and management is important. There are 3 main types of hypertension in pregnancy: 1. Chronic hypertension – when you already have high blood pressure before you become pregnant 2. Gestational or pregnancy induced hypertension – high blood pressure appearing and progressing after 20 weeks of pregnancy without other organ involvement. (Meaning your kidney and liver function are still normal). 3. Pre-eclampsia – the most severe form of pregnancy induced hypertension. High blood pressure being the symptom of a much more serious issue with your kidneys, liver or circulatory system. Occurs in up to 5% of pregnancies. So, what does this mean? In early pregnancy, it may be normal for you to have ‘low’ blood pressure. Around 22 weeks gestation, your blood pressure should return to normal, meaning, less than 140/90. During routine antenatal (pregnancy) care, the midwife or doctor should assess your blood pressure at every appointment as well as periodically checking your urine/blood for any signs of issues developing with your kidneys or liver. If you already had hypertension or you develop high blood pressure during your pregnancy you will likely need more antenatal visits and blood tests. You may also need medication to help control your high blood pressure which is crucial to protect you and your baby. For most women, high blood pressure in pregnancy is only mild, develops late in the pregnancy and is easy to manage. However, occasionally pre-eclampsia may develop and can become severe or life-threatening very quickly (<1% of cases). Are you wondering if you may need to pump your breastmilk and discard it? Also referred to as ‘pumping and dumping’ after consuming alcohol, medications or drugs? In the case of alcohol, the alcohol level of your breastmilk is essentially the same as the level contained within your blood. Removing your milk by pumping after consuming alcohol and then discarding it does not reduce the amount of alcohol present within your milk supply more quickly. The only thing that influences the amount of alcohol contained within your milk is time. As the level in your blood supply starts to drop so does the level in your milk supply. You must certainly can pump your milk after consuming alcohol for comfort reasons or to maintain supply for a missed breastfeed. You may wish to pump for the reason of consuming more than a moderate amount of alcohol and not wishing to breastfeed. You can use previously expressed milk from when you weren’t drinking alcohol to feed your infant. Remember as long as you have alcohol present in your blood it is also present in your milk supply. Waiting 2 hours after your last alcoholic drink to breastfeed or pump should allow for enough time for the alcohol to make its way out of your milk supply. If you are concerned about any medications that you may have been prescribed or currently taking it is always best to check with your medical provider or pharmacist to be able to determine the effects of the medication on your infant and the amount likely to be present in your milk supply. LactMed is a great resource with information on drugs and chemicals that breastfeeding mothers may be exposed to. And just like that, E3 learned how to play at the park like her older sisters. I had a few short months (a few weeks this season) to enjoy sitting and watching the kids play independently. For the next year, I'll be frantically running around the park skirt, monitoring all the openings, questioning my sanity, and decision to even go to a park. The level of dare-devil in my youngest will become apparent. It might even be daring enough to serve as birth control! I was so proud and cheered her on ferociously as she learned to climb up the park, crawl through the tube, and slide down all on her own. Then I got in the car and felt reality set in as I realized an era of parenting was temporarily over.
