That’s a wrap on @ironmantri 70.3(5)Chattanooga. This was my first time doing this race and my first visit to Chattanooga. Loved the town! So many restaurants and breweries. Very walkable, too. The race is unofficially the largest 70.3 with about 4,000 signed up. The swim is in a river headed downstream, but is 1.4 miles and not the traditional 1.2 - hence the 70.5. It is fast, not as fast as I’d heard or hoped, but I swam far left and think I didn’t benefit from the current as much although my yardage was spot on. Also hit a fish, tbd if dead or alive. I did not hit a bridge. I LOVED the bike course - it was so beautiful. I made sure to look around and take it in. It is rolling with two stronger areas - one short and steep around mile 25-26 and one long slow climb around mile 44. I had way too much fun on the bike. Just a hair over 3 hours, but also clocked at 56.65 miles. The bike course was entirely too crowded and not closed, it was really congested at times. Well since I had so much fun on the bike, by the time I got to the run in 87 degree temps, it was more of a run walk and then a walk walk. It was so hot. My left quad kept seizing up entirely. All good. I still finished and had a great time cheering on my friends as they finished as well. Shout out to Pete on his first ever 70.3 finish!! Up next is Eagleman in under three weeks. The finish is a downhill. My right knee was having a hard time with it. Once I saw the cones and chute structure I knew I just defeated Chattanooga! Down the chute in a very painful attempt to jog the finish. An awful 3:17:03 run 4th fastest (out of 6, 1 is a DNF). A 7:20:03 finish for 3rd fastest 70.3! Hearing my name and getting redemption revenge was so rewarding. But of course me being me... only some satisfaction as the run really prevented an epic day. But the story is finished! Okay so it’s been a bit since I posted Parker was home-from-school sick last week, then had a birthday (yay Parker!!!) party complete with bouncy house the day after we got all that rain, I got bronchitis (again) and I ended up missing most of the party because of an emergency dentist visit to get a crown put on 2 cracked teeth. Yeah so it’s been a less-than-stress-free couple days. AND STILL… Laying in bed at 0400 when my alarm went off I had every intention of doing a pretty aggressive workout. Why? Well because it was on my schedule, but the real answer is because I wasn’t thinking with my head I was letting my ego take the wheel. So I swapped out the workout I’d have definitely stopped short on for one that accomplished three things: 1 - Wasn’t anywhere near as taxing on my respiratory system. 2 - Elevate the body temp and hopefully help kick this last bit of junk out, and 3 - Still make me feel like I was moving forward. So what’s my point? Set yourself up for wins as much as possible. #medalmonday Saturday I ran Harpers Ferry Half Marathon in West Virginia completing my 24th state. This race includes over 1,300 ft of elevation gain and amazing views throughout. Rain the night before and rain during the race made the trail portions dicey. The whole week I was debating road shoes vs trail shoes and went with road. Certain sections I was very grateful for the decision and certain sections I thought I was going to slide into a face plant. Mile 10.3 I had an odd situation where the insole of my left shoe start to slide out of position every step I took. Ended up pulling the insole out, tying the shoe tighter and finished the last 3 miles awkwardly. The hills were tough, but I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. Ironman 70.3 Chattanooga.. wasn’t a PR but probably one of the most rewarding races and efforts of done. Finish time of 5:26:02 good for 61 in AG and 717th overall. The swim went fairly smooth, and considering it was my first open water since last October I cant complain. Sighting was a bit off and probably went a little long because of it, but caught up to a lot of folks and had to make some efforts to swim around. In Hindsight, I should’ve started up much further in the race and could have avoided a lot of the chaos! 34:49 The bike was fun, but goodness was it crowded! Seems I would get past one peloton to only come up behind another. I get that with this many riders it’s hard not to draft, but at least don’t make it so obvious. With all the riders it was difficult to get into a steady effort and probably spent more time on the bars than I would’ve liked, but my back was angry and tight so maybe not a bad thing. Overall a great course and extremely challenging, rollers for as long as the eye could see and it was fun to bomb down and try to make it up the other side without losing momentum. 2:32:55 Out onto the run and this is where it was rough, my training has been down due to some calf/achilles issues so wasn’t sure where I would go. Set a goal to keep Hr around 150 and let the pace be what it be, which turned out to be around 9:00/mile. Combine this with purposefully walking the aid station and this worked well for over 10 miles. But somewhere around there the stars came out, energy dropped and I jumped fully onto the struggle bus 🚌. Last few miles became a lot of walking but finished. Run: 2:05:50 Total time of 5:26:02 and a great race. It was great seeing all the @theinfinitloop @peakathleticcollective athletes out there and getting the energy from them. Great day for all! But don’t be fooled into thinking I am going to let the 1:22 go down easily. I don’t know what possessed me to run a hill workout the day following a tough strength training workout. 🤷🏼♂️ Probably just too old and feeble minded because it didn’t go as planned. I seemed to walk most of the way as I was just too tired and sore to complete a proper hill workout. I must be thinking of the workouts I could complete when I was in my 20s and 30s. No good comes from that comparison game. Back then I was young and foolish. Now after all these years I am no longer young. 😆 That’s all for now. Boy howdy…. So this has been quite a month for training. Post-race slump hits (yes it’s a thing), then NBD gets me energized again (naturally!!) then Parker gets sick and a week of worrying about him and relatively sleepless nights Blake’s it hard to keep the train rolling. Tried to hit it today with an easy (or so I thought) VO2 ride - 5x5 of 30/30s at 130% - should have been easy but daaaaaang. Gutted it out, thought of quitting, drank some water, thought of quitting again, and you can see where the wheels come off on the last set. Glad to have stuck with it but if it was 5x6 I’m not so sure it would have happened. Keep at it my friends. It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood! It wasn’t as cool as yesterday but still a very nice morning to run, so I took advantage of it. I have run about the same route every day. One is because there is a Strava segment that I have run more than anyone in the past 90 days thus becoming the Local Legend (I know, who care), but also I will pass the elementary school after the bell has rung and I have much less traffic (but just as fast and crazy) to deal with. It was a very humid morning with little breeze except what was caused by the speeding traffic. 💨 Later this morning we had a very nice rain, heavy at times, that cooled things off dramatically. I ran a virtual Mother’s Day Weekend 5K for the 2nd day to support the @americancancersociety. If you would care to donate I think the link is in my stories. I had many technical issues just getting the fundraising page established and online. Either because my phone is old and slow or I am. Probably both. It pains me say this but I may need to make the very difficult decision to use the money I have been saving for new running shoes and use it for a newer phone. 😭 How can I raid my new shoe fund for a phone? Which is more important? I know, I know. In my case it is the phone. My wife gets worried if I am out running for over an hour. Even though I have live tracking active she thinks someone will find me collapsed on the side of the road somewhere and unresponsive as that 5 foot rattle snake I saw run over this morning by a speeding truck. Started my day with an impromptu trail run with a friend. Yes, I gave up my sleep-in day to go run trails! I did come home to homemade protein pancakes and eggs, and then we managed to fit in a Mother’s Day family hike before swim lesson and lacrosse practice. We finished the day with homemade fajitas (including homemade corn tortillas) and gluten free, dairy free mudhens. In between everything, I played lots of board and card games.
