Day 104 Game 104 - Judge Dredd: Helter Skelter Designer: Martin Wallace Publisher: @ospreygames Judge Dredd: Helter Skelter (JDHS) is a skirmish game for 1-4 players based on Martin Wallaceโs Wildlands system. Iโve actually only played the solo mode so far, and it seems to work very wellโฆand Iโve lost every single time. Iโm getting closer every time, butโฆNOPE! In the solo mode, your team takes on the Dark Judgesโฆand they are TOUGH. The goal in this mode to either kill all the Dark Judges or score six points before all of your team is wiped out. There are five fragments to collect, each with one point. If you kill a Dark Judge, you double your score, so, essentially the easiest path to victory seems to be picking up three fragments and killing one judge. Hand management is a huge part of this game. Itโs how players move, attack, block, and pick up fragments each round. Players can only have up to seven cards in their hand and can only draw three each round. Itโs a challenging balancing act. Also, I do have Wildlands with The Ancients expansion, which seems to have a more fleshed out solo mode. I was in Atlanta at an improv festival, and I was invited to play with some fellow improvisers. The theme immediately grabbed me, and the gameplay felt super easy. I dug it. Now I wouldnโt say SOTM was the game that got me into the hobby, but it was the game that made me aware of games beyond the mass market landscape. A few years later, as my game addiction grew, I bought SOTM for myself. And you know somethingโฆI didnโt care for it much. Without my friends keeping track of the many tokens, the accounting felt incredibly fiddly. On top of that, several cards seemed pointless to me, and the decks lacked synergy. So I sold itโฆ โฆand then bought the definitive edition, hoping the problems that plagued the original were solve. And they were! The designers streamlined the game even more, while creating hero and villain decks that feel so different but are absolutely combo-tastic. And I truly adore the lived in world the designers have created. There are so many meaty decisions to be made and several paths to victoryโand it all ties together with a lovely theme. I pulled this game out today, thinking I had played it solo previously. As I was re-learning the game (it has been a while), I realized I had forgotten almost everything. What I will say is that, as far as Stonemaier game automas go, this one confused me a bit more than others. Itโs possible that Iโve just been spoiled by Expeditions and Apiary, but this one felt fiddlierโnot hard, mind you. Just a little harder. Some people say things worth having should flow effortlessly rather than being difficult but I'm more of a "nothing worth having is easy" type. And radio is proper effing hard. Two screens, a chunky pressy button thing, the slidey thing and software to learn... And an Instagram live that's currently extremely bloody boring to watch. I could let the station choose my songs and populate them for me. But every single one means something and I get so much joy from creating my playlist. I could lose the format of shouting out businesses and charities and livestreaming. But the whole reason I'm doing it is to give people somewhere to chat, connect and feel welcomed. So I'm pushing on with something I'm so passionate about. Broadcasters and presenters who make this look effortless, I wholeheartedly salute you because it's really not. But I WILL get the hang of it eventually. It'll be so much better when I'm live, especially my Claire's Saturday Social Insta Live which I'll be launching properly very soon. Have you ever seen an owl? They look like mini angels. I feel like I'm on a bit of a rollercoaster at the moment. And I'm not complaining, because I've bloody created it. But between the new radio show, building my business and trying to stay fit and healthy, I'm taking nothing for granted when it comes to my wellbeing. So my mini break with my family was a lovely way to stay topped up with good vibes.
