My mum has grown the most amazing flowers for my wedding and today we took a wonderful walk together around the farm to start planning the bouquets and button holes! What a gorgeous day to be at Lottie today, managed to get quite a bit done. Fruit cage had a glow up, 😊, weeded and then planted some marigolds and antirrhinums. Spaced out the sweetcorn. The arch beds now contains 10 tomato plants and marigolds, alongside the greek gigantes and the butternut squashes. With the flowers and tomato’s now been planted out it meant that I could remove two shelving units from the greenhouse and bought in a couple of trays to place the peppers and chilli’s into, hoping that it helps with keeping them watered. At point do you think I will realise that the sweet peas are out of control, I wanted a cornucopia of them going up the obelisk but hmmmm might have few more than that 😂🤣 The peach tree has leaves, don’t think there will be any fruit on it this year but it was only planted a few weeks ago. The allium’s have been swamped with bees today and this beauty is big globe, not the size of a child’s head like the picture led me to believe but it is still amazing. I have planted a couple of scented leaf pelargoniums in a gap and I think this entryway bed is ready for its second summer. It’s lovely to watch how this space is taking shape, it’s filling in with all the lovely plants, and there is always something exciting that catches my eye. This space under the holly tree (incredibly annoying because of the sharp leaves it drops every summer but incredibly loved for the wildlife value) is very dry although gets plenty of sunshine. In my excitement to plant up every available inch last year, I decided to try herbs as they could cope with drier conditions. It snowballed from there swiftly. I’ve planted a Warwickshire drooper plum, Ben More blackcurrant and added a sweet pea tower. Planted sage, two types of rosemary and thyme, oregano (only a thyme survived). Moved a lavender from elsewhere in the garden, added a couple of spare salvias, a pineapple salvia too (second year running). There are also achillea and self seeded mullein, nasturtiums and borage. A cotton lavender plant added this spring to hopefully have a silver ball holding the space there through the winter. A wild strawberry, a little creeping thyme edge and a red leaf plantain, all grown from seed. Even a few bulbs of saffron crocus. List seems neverending. There is also a couple of caraway plants in the middle that are just starting coming into seed. The seeds, they taste like childhood, when my grandma knew where to find some wild plants to pick seeds for the traditional Latvian midsummer cheese. (It makes me instantly wanting to run to the farm for some raw milk to make the cheese.) It is now one of my favourite spaces just doing its thing, filling the air with fragrances and delicious scents, giving me some picking of herbs and flowers, making that journey to compost bin a little more exciting. The plants are really starting to romp away. These plants had all of their tendrils removed on Wednesday evening, along with being tied up. Within 48 hours they are producing tendrils of this size and are in need of being tied up again. This means for the next 2 months, they will be getting tied up every 2 days. Regardless of how you grow, a good indicator of how much vigour your plants have, especially at this stage of the season is to look at the tendrils. The bigger they are the more vigorous the plant should be. Also whilst removing the tendrils this evening, I have spotted flower buds in the heads of the cordon plants. Once the buds are big enough, these will get removed, to conserve energy for later in the season. If you are growing for fun, and not an extreme Sweet Pea nutter like me, I’d advise that you remove the buds until the plants are 3ft high, when they become become enough to sustain the flowers.
