The Shaggs were an unconventional American rock band formed in Fremont, New Hampshire, in 1965. The group consisted of three sisters: Dorothy “Dot” Wiggin (vocals and lead guitar), Betty Wiggin (vocals and rhythm guitar), and Helen Wiggin (drums). Later, Rachel Wiggin joined on bass guitar. Their music has been described as both among the worst of all time and a work of unintentional brilliance. The Shaggs composed seemingly simple and bizarre songs using untuned guitars, erratic time signatures, disconnected rhythms, wandering melodies, and rudimentary lyrics. Their father Austin, encouraged/forced them into forming a band, believing they were destined for musical greatness due to his mother’s palm-reading prophecy(😳). Despite their lack of musical proficiency, their album “Philosophy of the World” (recorded in a single day) gained a cult following and was promoted by fans Frank Zappa and Kurt Cobain. Zappa described the Shaggs as being “better than the Beatles”. Rolling Stone magazine described it as “…the worst album ever recorded.” The Shaggs’ influence can be seen in experimental and avant-garde music circles, celebrating their unpolished sincerity. Travelling from Berlin to Barcelona with these two piano pieces op. 33a and 33b by Schönberg: both pieces were composed during his time as head of a master class in composition at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. This position gave Schönberg a great deal of freedom and he often spent the months around the turn of the year in southern Europe, partly to escape the harsh Berlin winter. Peter Joshua Sculthorpe (29 April 1929 – 8 August 2014) was an Australian composer. Much of his music resulted from an interest in the music of countries neighbouring Australia as well as from the impulse to bring together aspects of Aboriginal Australian music with that of the heritage of the West. He was known primarily for his orchestral and chamber music, such as Kakadu (1988) and Earth Cry (1986), which evoke the sounds and feeling of the Australian bushland and outback. He also wrote 18 string quartets, using unusual timbral effects, works for piano, and two operas. He stated that he wanted his music to make people feel better and happier for having listened to it. He typically avoided the dense, atonal techniques of many of his contemporary composers. His work was often characterised by its distinctive use of percussion. I'm sure most of you are well aware of Robert Schumann's four-symphony cycle. However, those who are less aware of 20th-century American classical music might not know about the ten symphonies written by the American composer William Schuman (1910-1992). I already uploaded a score video of his third symphony, which is a standout work of Neoclassicism, and now the ninth is up as well! The link to my channel is in my bio. Schuman's ninth symphony of 1968, as is the case with many of his later symphonies, is of a rather different character from his earlier orchestral works. It was written after the composer visited the Ardeatine Caves, in which over 300 Italian civilians were massacred by the Nazis in 1944 following an earlier attack by Italian resistance forces. The musical content of this work has always been controversial and may not resonate with some ears, at least at first. Befitting the subject matter, it is a bleak, gloomy, and essentially atonal piece with far less clarity in development than one might find in Schuman's third symphony. Intéressant n’est-ce pas? Lorsque j'ai besoin de me nettoyer les oreilles, j'écoute de la musique atonale. Rien de mieux pour renouveler ma perception des autres styles. Je pense que toute musique mérite d’être écoutée au moins une fois avec une grande ouverture d’esprit. On peut en apprendre beaucoup en comprenant clairement ce qu’on aime et pourquoi. On arrive parfois à faire des liens inattendus. Avez-vous remarqué que dans mon arcane atonal, le jeu de ma main gauche ressemble à celle de mon arcane boogie-woogie? La musique atonale représente bien l’anxiété des deux guerres mondiales et le boogie-woogie représente bien les Années folles de plaisirs qui arrivent entre elles. OTD in Music History: Notable British composer Elisabeth Lutyens (1906 - 1983) is born in London. The first major British composer to adopt twelve-tone serialism as a primary compositional technique (which arguably made her the most “radical” composer working in Britain in the mid-20th Century), Lutyens already aspired to write concert music as a child – in 1922, she briefly enrolled at the “Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris” to pursue her musical education, before withdrawing in order to accompany her mother on a trip to India. Upon her return to Britain, Lutyens quickly resumed her musical studies at the Royal College of Music, where she remained from 1926 to 1930. It was only after the end of WWII that Lutyens really began to attract international attention as a creative artist, however – eventually earning herself the derogatory nickname “Twelve-Note Lizzie” as a result of her unwavering dedication to the total serialist techniques pioneered by Arnold Schoenberg 1874 - 1951) and his discipline, Anton Webern (1883 - 1945). It would be a stretch to say that any of Lutyens’s music has truly entered the standard performance repertoire, but she certainly enjoyed a major international career in the 1960s and 1970s. A list of her major works would include “O Saisons, O Chateaux” (1946), the chamber opera “The Pit” (1947), “Concertante” (1950), “Quincunx” (1959), “The Country of Stars” (1963), “Vision of Youth” (1970) and “Echoi” (1979). OTD in Music History: Historically important French composer Edgard Varese (1883 - 1965) watches as his latest masterpiece, “Ameriques,” receives its world premiere under the baton of Leopold Stokowski (1882 - 1977) and the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1926. Varese first studied music in Paris at the illustrious “Schola Cantorum” under Vincent d’Indy (1851 - 1931) and Albert Roussel (1869 - 1937), before moving on to the Paris Conservatoire where he was taught by Charles-Marie Widor (1844 - 1937). As a young man, Varese also enjoyed the support of both Claude Debussy (1862 - 1917) and Erik Satie (1866 - 1925). In 1907, Varese relocated to Berlin, where he came under the influence of Richard Strauss (1864 - 1949) and Ferruccio Busoni (1866 - 1924). In 1915, however, Varese fled to America in order to escape WWI. Although his complete surviving ouvre last only about three hours, Varese is widely recognized as one of the most important and original composers of the 20th Century. His music is dissonant, nonthematic, and rhythmically asymmetric; indeed, he fundamentally conceived of music as “bodies of sound floating in space." Most of Varese's early works are lost. His important surviving works include “Hyperprism” for wind instruments and percussion (1923); “Ameriques”; “Ionisation” for percussion, piano, and sirens (1931); and “Density 21.5” for unaccompanied flute (1936). His later “Deserts” (1954) employs tape-recorded sound, and “Poeme electronique” (1958) was intended to be played through 425 loudspeakers. Written between 1918 and 1921 (and subsequently revised after its world premiere in 1927), “Ameriques” was the first piece that Varese composed after moving to America. A long awaited project of mine is finally coming to fruition!: to record Alban Berg's Sieben Frühe Lieder with the incredible Daan Boertien! I first heard Berg's song cycle in my bachelor studies. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5… getting well acquainted with my metronome for this Friday’s concert at Hamburg’s @elbphilharmonie — and surprised that it’s already completely SOLD OUT! We’re acknowledging Luigi Nono’s 100th Anniversary with a performance of “Il canto sospeso” (The Suspended Song) with conductor @jonathan.stockhammer @simonbodetenor @noa.frenkel and the @ndr.eo Orchestra and Vokalensemble. Compound rhythms, crazy interval jumps, floated high Cs, humming and relentless counting… it’s one of those brainy work weeks for me, with poignant material — farewell letters from captured resistance fighters to their families before execution. Heavy stuff. To prepare such complex music in a vocally healthy way, I’m learning to balance the intellectual and the intuitive, to oscillate between actively ‘chasing’ and ‘receiving’ the stimulus (pitch, rhythm, articulation, dynamic and phrase form). I’m no contemporary music expert, but it’s good to have this kind of contrast in my schedule from time to time… keeps me on my toes! My concerto for symphony orchestra, “13 Waitresses”, will have it’s premiere Wednesday night as a music video at the Almaty Underground Screening Festival in Almaty, Kazakhstan. I am over the moon about this 14 minute work for a small (37 piece) orchestra being heard, first: because it’s the first piece I have composed for full orchestra- and second: because it gets to happen in such a cool place as the Almaty Festival. This work began as a ballet last year but that never got off the ground so I prepared a short film of found footage with dance & text explaining the storyline of the ballet which functions as a visual accompaniment along with the music. I am so grateful to the 101Dump Gallery, and to the Almaty Festival for choosing “13 Waitresses” and allowing this concerto to be heard. Diese Woche war nun endlich der Probenstart @operwuppertal für ERWARTUNG-das Stück, das ich in den letzten Monaten wie eine Verrückte vorbereitet hab!*😂 nach jeder Probe ist mein Gehirn total gaga, aber ich liebe es!😆🤪🤩 *Aufgrund der extremen musikalischen Herausforderung war ich neugierig, wieviel Zeit ich wohl für meine Vorbereitung brauchen würde-und hab daher mal die Stunden, die ich damit alleine am Klavier verbracht hab, von Anfang an mitgezählt: das waren ungefähr 65 h. Spent a few days in beautiful Vienna where we celebrated the premiere of the VR Opera ‚Erwartung‘ at the @arnoldschoenbergcenter 🎶 I had the honor and pleasure to create the soundscapes, music and sound effects for the interactive sequences of the experience. @andrebuecker realized this immersive and captivating single player virtual reality game at @staatstheater_augsburg in cooperation with @hmspl.de. The player slips into the role of the protagonist and in between the opera passages you can walk around freely to explore and interact with the surroundings and perform tasks (such as grabbing and eating mushrooms and …) to progress to the next stages. Hearing my sounds back to back with the terrific recording of the @augsburger_philharmoniker and the outstanding singer Sally du Randt makes me feel grateful for this opportunity. Thanks for the trust André 🤍 ‚Erwartung’ was composed by Arnold Schönberg, a pioneer in atonal music, and was premiered 100 years ago. This year also marks Schönbergs 150th birthday, a great time to release this experience to the world. You can buy it on steam soon, so if you have a VR headset go check it out.
