Circus cyaneus (juvenile) Tracked Hen Harriers typically live just 121 days after fledging and the risk of illegal killing increases as individuals spend more time on areas managed for grouse shooting. Funny that. Wilfully destroyed so a few Neanderthal Tory boys can blast thousands of defenceless grouse out of the sky for “fun”. #pencildrawing #art #sketch #illustration #artistofinstagram #therapy #healing #wellbeing #conservation #britishbirds #rspb #rspb_love_nature #letnaturesing #reviveourplanet #UKwildlife #nature #countryside #greatoutdoors #birdsofinstagram #britishbirds #protecthabitats #protectthewild #persecution #saveourwildisles #toriesout #threattonature #henharrier #circuscyaneus #bandrivengrouseshooting

Hen Harrier. The male, the Ghost Of The Moors. An utterly stunning raptor, sadly a rare sight in the UK, away from havens like here on Mull. The males aren't hatched in these fine colours. They're brown originally, and it can take a couple of years to develop into the full adult male breeding plumage. Yesterday was the ‘Glorious Twelth’ AKA the ’Inglorious Twelth’. For those that don’t know this is the day the driven grouse shooting season in the UK uplands starts. Here is your yearly reminder to demand better for our uplands. Every year thousands of animals from hares to hen harriers to foxes to eagles are snared, trapped and killed so that only red grouse can thrive and be shot for ‘sport’. All for what? The benefit of short term enjoyment for the wealthy few who continue an outdated hobby while ecosystems shrivel. Alongside wildlife persecution moorland is burnt, overgrazed and peat bogs are drained all contributing to climate change and flooding risk of lower land. 65% of species in the uplands are in decline and 72% of young satellite-tagged Hen Harriers disappear in ‘suspicious circumstances’ on grouse moors in Northern England- with the Peak District National Park on the doorstep of Sheffield being a hotspot. Millions of pounds of public money props up this sport, carried out on land in England greater than the size of Greater London and hoarded by the elite few. Think how amazing this land could be if it was community owned, and/or managed by conservationists - thriving wildlife alongside green job creation. Today the @wildsheffieldandrotherham @greenpeacesheffield and co are encouraging us to declare a nature emergency in Sheffield. Sheffield city council declare a climate emergency 2 years ago. We know the ecological and climate emergencies must be tackled together, so we want them to declare a nature emergency too- and encourage all Sheffield businesses and individuals to do the same and work together to repair and regenerate nature. See my video for more. But here’s what you can do to help: 🌿 Declare a nature/ecologically emergency yourself! Share on social media and tag me and other local accounts. 🦔 Join a local group that takes care of nature! In Sheffield we have @wildsheffieldandrotherham, @xrsheff, @greenpeacesheffield and check out the @sheffieldenvironmental website for more. 🦅 Support @wild.justice and oppose driven grouse shooting which contributes to so many of the issue in the uplands. 🥦 Support regenerative, organic farming and plant based eating - I can thoroughly recommend my @regatherworks for their organic veg box. 🏃🏾‍♀️Remember access to nature is incredibly unequal, support inclusivity in the outdoors and oppose the PSCS Bill which will criminalise trespass (and also read The Book of Trespass and Who Owns England) 🦋 Support good eco-tourism ventures - such as the @kneppsafaris and many more. 🪴 Consider nature in everything you do- from your garden to your cleaning products to your diet. 🦉 And most importantly - go and experience nature! See yourself as part of it rather than separate to it, learn a local patch and open your eyes to all that is missing from it, before it’s too late 💔.

THE TRUTH ABOUT “draining the moors” - One of the big arguments anti shooting bodies (including the Labour party) like to shout from the rooftops is that we drain moorland to produce more grouse 🤷🏼‍♀️ - When in truth the past couple of generations of landowners and gamekeepers have spent time and money blocking ditches that were actually subsidised by the government in the 50’s and 80’s to enhance grazing so farmers could produce more food to help feed the country from our own resources after the war! - Modern grip blocking techniques range nowadays, but they can range from this stone work designed to catch peat run-off and help create a natural bank over time, to a wooden board system with the same aim! - So next time you hear someone rattling off the same old anti shooting speil, challenge them with the facts! @gamewildlifeconservationtrust @gwctstudents #factcheck #fact #gamekeeper #gamekeeping #polotics #moorland #bandrivengrouseshooting #flooding #floods #grousemoor #shooting #info #information #learnsomethingnew

Finally finished the hen harrier design (well, finished for now, until I go back to tinker some more 😆). Was hoping to have it finished for the inglorious 12th, but the heat got the better of me. I'll ask again that if you don't already know about these beautiful birds and the persecution they and other raptors suffer on driven grouse moors, please investigate a little then consider contacting your MP to ask if they will fight for a better future for our upland wildlife. @wild.justice have a call to action on their website to help you do just that.

Always eloquent and respectful. #Repost @megan_mccubbinphoto with @get_repost ・・・ Today is the #inglorious12th - a day that kicks off the season of driven grouse shooting. Shooters flood onto the moors to shoot grouse, but they’re not the only causalities from this environmentally damaging practice. Hen harriers, buzzards, red kites, goshawks, sea eagles, peregrines, golden eagles, owls, kestrels, foxes, even pet dogs.... all illegally shot out of the sky or poisoned with bait. And that’s not to mention the impact that intensive moorland management and burning has. A few weeks ago I got the opportunity to visit a hen harrier nest under license to help monitor the population. Since 2018, 43 of these beautiful sky dancers have been killed or have disappeared under very suspicious circumstances. And that’s the very tip of a very big iceberg! This data has come from satellite tags or cases where evidence has been found. Imagine how many disappear without us knowing... Currently there’s about 500 pairs of this rare species in the UK, but our countryside has the capacity for at least 2,500. Seeing these hen harrier chicks was something I’d dreamt of... but when they disperse, what are the chances of their safety? Minimal. The @rspb_love_nature gathered data showing that of all the sat tagged birds, 72% go down mysteriously. Driven grouse shooting is outdated and irresponsible. Please go to https://wildjustice.eaction.org.uk to get involved and help us reform grouse moors. #inglorious12th #conservation #saveourskydancers #sos #saveourhenharriers #bandrivengrouseshooting #notasport #putyourgundown #moorlandmanagement #getthinking #rspb #wildlifecrime

So what’s the deal with Hen Harrier day and the problems in the UK uplands? 🦅🏔⁣ ⁣ Yesterday was Hen Harrier day - a day which as described by Green Party’s @nataliebennettgreen “highlights the lifelessness of our landscapes”.⁣ ⁣ Hen harriers have declined by over 25% since 2004 especially in areas dominated by intensive grouse moor management. They and others raptors feed on grouse chicks (amongst many other prey), this brings them into conflict with grouse moor managers who rely on plentiful supplies for driven grouse shoots. As a result Hen Harriers have been relentlessly illegally persecuted (shot, trapped and poisoned).⁣ ⁣ The uplands in general are in trouble with 65% of species in decline, with habitats being damaged through poor management such as burning practices, bog and wetland draining and inappropriate grazing. And for all other Sheffielders- this is right on our own doorstep in the Peak District, one of the areas with the heaviest raptor persecution. Also from Natalie: “This is a national park, yet it is a barren space of rye grass and Heather, cultivated and groomed”.⁣ ⁣ The hen harrier is worth protecting in its own right, but it is also a symbol for all the species and ecosystems we want to thrive. In areas of such natural beauty its unthinkable to learn that so many wild animals are simply not welcome, all for the short term gains of a wealthy few. We must reverse this injustice and not be silenced.⁣ ⁣ Actions:⁣ ⁣ - E-mail your local politician on the issue via wildjustice.eaction.org.uk (link in bio).⁣ - Consider donating towards Langholm moor community buyout- an amazing initiative to buy moorland from one of the country’s biggest landowners and ecologically restore it. (via Go fund me)⁣ - Support your local wildlife protection group e.g @thewildlifetrusts, @rspb_love_nature, @onekindscotland ⁣ - Follow Chris Packham’s Facebook for regular updates on persecuted raptors and resources, actions etc.⁣ ⁣ Sources: @derbyshirewildlifetrust, @wild.justice ⁣

These beautiful birds of prey never fail to produce a thrill. However, they've got a price on their heads on grouse moors, with illegal persecution rife on these intensively managed areas of land. Once again, we approach the "Glorious 12th," the start of the season for driven grouse shooting; once again this year, we've seen the true cost of driven grouse shooting. This activity involves huge numbers of Red Grouse being kept at their maximum number, ready for them to be flushed towards shooters for a day's "sport" at a lucrative price. Anything that could conceivably harm the profits of the grouse moor, through predation, competition or disease is eradicated. Hen Harriers are especially targeted, due to their appetite for grouse. Their population has declined by 27% since 2004, with local declines particularly clear in the areas intensively managed for grouse shooting. In 2017, not a single Hen Harrier chick was produced on a grouse moor in England, despite it being theoretically prime habitat. 72% of the RSPB's 58 satellite-tagged Hen Harriers were killed on or near a grouse moor. These aren't anomalies and this isn't a debatable point: Hen Harriers and other raptors are illegally persecuted on grouse moors to a significant degree and to a greater extent than in other environments. This criminal attack on our wildlife and environment is an obsession with profit over sustainability. The frequency of reports of dead raptors shows it's not just the odd "bad apple." There's a barrel-full of them and politicians (and also responsible shooters) that refuse to acknowledge or tackle this criminal activity, are complicit. It's not just wildlife that's killed. Recently, a pet dog died after eating a unique concoction of poisons that has turned up in two dead Red Kites and Buzzard in the area. This outdated past time is underpinned by criminal activity; we have to stop this assault on our environment and wildlife for good.

I painted this hen harrier at RSPB Rainham Marshes in support of Hen Harrier Day. This annual event draws attention to the illegal killing of hen harriers on heather moorland managed for driven grouse shooting. To produce unnaturally high numbers of grouse for the sport, all predators are killed and the moors are burnt to promote new heather growth for the grouse to feed on. This practice damages the peat, increases carbon release and leads to worse flooding downstream. This year the event is online. Watch it live here and support the effort to protect hen harriers: www.youtube.com/HenHarrierDayUK #henharrier #henharrierday #henharriers #rspb #rspbrainhammarshes #bandrivengrouseshooting #redgrouse #grouse #raptor #raptorpersecution

‼️ We urgently need your help! The mass killing of mountain hares may finally end thanks to a proposal from Scottish Green MSP Alison Johnstone, who has lodged an amendment to the Animals and Wildlife Bill. OneKind has long fought for an end to the cruel killing of our iconic species and now we have a chance to really put the pressure on and end this for good. Stage 3 of the Animals & Wildlife Bill will take place next Wednesday and MSPs will vote on Alison Johnstone’s amendment to make the mountain hare a protected species. You can help by emailing or tweeting your MSP to ask whether they are considering supporting the amendment. This could be a big moment for our precious mountain hares! Let us know down below if you’ve emailed/tweeted, and tag any friends who might help in the comments. Thank you! ❄️

⚠️ Difficult viewing. OneKind are actively campaigning for a #SnareFreeScotland. Snares are widely used throughout Scotland, mainly to protect game birds from fox predation. We believe snares to be a cruel and unacceptable method of predator control. Although often targeted towards foxes, they are totally indiscriminate and regularly trap and harm deer, hares, rabbits, birds... the list goes on. You can help us bring an end to the immense suffering and pain that is inflicted upon so many animals in this way: REPORT any sightings to the OneKind team. You could also post to our SnareWatch Facebook page. These sighting are valuable evidence and really help to demonstrate the cruelty of snares. Write to your MSP or the First Minister, asking them to support a total ban on snares. Join OneKind with a monthly donation to help us fuel this campaign and keep the efforts up until we see a #SnareFreeScotland. Follow the link in our bio to read about our top 5 reasons why snares should be banned.

Hen Harrier. A stunning female, or "ringtail" out hunting one winter in Mull. Today is Hen Harrier Day 2019 #HenHarrierDay2019 #HHDay2019 in the UK, and is a sad day for anyone like me who adores these enigmatic raptors. On Mull, the only threat they face is from Mother Nature, in terms of other predators and the elements. This is how it should be across the whole of the UK. But it isn't. Because of Driven Grouse Shooting, and the need for huge numbers of grouse to be available for shooting, these raptors (along with others that fly over or try to nest within driven grouse moors) are killed, illegally, to protect the grouse. Ludicrous to anyone unfamiliar with this, as the grouse are then shot anyway. Hen Harrier Day tries to spread the word about this issue, which is a national disgrace, to more people each year. #henharrier #bandrivengrouseshooting #banDGS

Two more hen harriers, Skylar and Marci have been lost this spring. Skylar had been roosting overnight in an area of rushes and rough grassland fringing a grouse moor for several days before her tag abruptly stopped working. Marci’s tag was functioning normally, showing her exploring a wide area of north east Scotland until it suddenly stopped transmitting on 22 April 2019, despite no indication of any technical problems with the tag. Her last recorded position was in west Aberdeenshire, in an area managed intensively for driven grouse shooting near Strathdon and within the Cairngorms National Park. She had been in this area for the previous three weeks. Please click the link in our bio to help us fight back against the never ending blight of illegal raptor persecution.

This was Chris Packham's gate this morning, days after @wild.justice successfully challenged Natural England over the licensing of killing wild birds, namely that it has been operating an unlawful, unlicensed system for decades that allowed anyone, on a whim, to shoot rooks, Jays, crows and magpies. The sudden ban has upset a lot of people, namely these sort of Elmer Fudd types who think it is their God given right to shoot whatever they like, whenever they like. God knows what they hoped to achieve with this demonstration, but it is precisely this sort of moronic behaviour that destroys any sort of goodwill the public might have in our current stewards of the countryside. Things need to change.

A beautiful Mountain Hare catching some winter rays. Here in Shetland we think they are better shot with cameras - not guns. #shetlandwildlife #shetland #shetlandphotography #shetlandislands #scotland #inspiredbyshetland #shetlandisles #island #islands #animalsofinstagram #wildlifephotography #hare #mountainhare #bandrivengrouseshooting

A male hen harrier out hunting around a tidal marsh on the Isle Of Mull. Time seems to stand still when I see one of these bewitching raptors. How anyone can kill them is beyond me. But sadly here in the UK there are many of these soulless people who do, and is why hen harriers are a rare sight away from safe havens like Mull. #henharrier #bandgs #bandrivengrouseshooting #nature_brilliance #wildlifephotography #nature_photography #mull #leaveourhenharriersalone @bbcearth @onekindscotland @rspb_love_nature

Freedom Fighter 🐦🌿 #worldanimalday World Animal Day is an international day of action for animal rights and welfare celebrated annually on October 4, the feast day of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. This Red-legged partridge turned up in Richmond Park several weeks ago and is still going strong. Most likely escaped from a game shoot. Non-native in Britain, Red-legged partridges were introduced to compensate for the decline of the Grey Partridge. An estimated 35-40 million game birds are shot in the UK every season, mostly pheasants, partridges and grouse but many other birds are killed including Snipe, Golden Plover and red listed Woodcock. Many pheasants and partridges are killed at just 20 weeks of age, before they have had any experience of life or freedom. Those imported from the Continent are transported in cramped crates as regulations for live transportation of animals bred for food do not apply to those bred to be shot. Many other species suffer due to this cruel industry, wild birds and animals suffer habitat loss, others they consider to be vermin like foxes, are persecuted, shot, trapped and poisoned by estate owners claiming the need to protect their valuable assets. Raptor persecution and wildlife crime is rife. It is claimed that the birds are eaten but many have been found dumped on public land and in nature reserves. Most shoots still use lead shot which is toxic in the environment. Game shooting should be banned. This little survivor is an example of mistreated animals who just want to live. He may die alone which is sad, but at least he has a chance at life which many don’t have https://www.league.org.uk/shooting . . . #natgeo #gettyimages #conservation #springwatch #royalparks #partridge #richmondpark #instawild #naturyst #wildlondon #birdextreme #bbcearth #rspb_love_nature #wildlife_inspired #birdphotography #global4nature #eye_spy_birds #featheredfriends #feather_perfection #planetbirds #earthcapture #birdsmatter #wildlifefriend #bancannedhunting #bandrivengrouseshooting

Magnificent male hen harrier. I had the privilege of watching this male attempt to breed over the summer. Despite his best efforts the nests failed but I very much hope he survived to try again next year. Today in London #ThePeoplesWalkForWildlife will see thousands of people come together to stand up for all the persecuted and diminishing wildlife. I am sorry I can't be there, but the people that are represent hundreds of thousands more who also care deeply for our wildlife. I hope the message is clear that we will not stand by and watch our wildlife disappear. The time for action is now. #henharrier #bestbirdshots #wildlifeencounters #wildlife #nature #wildlifephotography #naturephotography #naturephotos #wildlifephotographer #femalenaturephotography #lovewildlife #lovenature #britishwildlife #fieldcraft #femalenaturephotographycom #exclusive_wildlife #ukwildlifeimages #1natureshot #majestic_wildlife_ #marvelouz_animals #scotnature #natgeoyourshot #nikon #bandrivengrouseshooting #traditioncanchange #raptorpersecution @bbcspringwatch @bbcearth @thewildlifetrusts @rspb_love_nature @birdlife.europe @outdoorphotographymag @ptes_org @friends_earth @bestbirdshots @ChrisGPackham @markiavery

Had a great day in Whitby today campaigning for #yorkshirewater to stop licencing Grouse Shooting on their land. Had a lot of support, and only one grouse shooter threatened to through us in the Esk estuary so not too bad. Tomorrow I'm off to Scarborough, while the rest of the team hit. #leagueagainstcruelsports #lacs #bandrivengrouseshooting #banshooting #stopshooting #yorkshire #yorkshireontap #whitby #godsowncountry #lovemyjob
