Babywearing saved me as a mommy who battled PPA (Postpartum Anxiety) & depression. I felt trapped in a cycle of needing to do things for me, wanting to do what was best for my baby, and surrounded by advice that didn’t resonate with me like “just put him in the crib and he will stop crying eventually!” Babywearing helped me to keep my little one close and content, so no screaming fits because I left him alone in a crib = lowering anxiety... but allowed me to tend to my own needs like cooking a decent meal and tidying up. It's Black Babywearing Week! Here are just a few occasions where I have pictured myself carrying doula babies and my toddler. At home, in the airport, on holidays, on the train Plus practice for my qualification as a sling peer supporter with @borntocarry I love how versatile a sling can be and also how much it makes babies and toddlers alike feel calm and safe. I have carried my own son since a tiny baby in a woven wrap and then after a few weeks I used the @lillebaby carrier which has become a staple for the rest of our journey so far. I would go as far to say it was one of our BEST baby buys - better than my (broken after light use for a year) £400 pram! The key to longevity in my opinion is comfort and finding something that you and your little one BOTH enjoy using. So, I hope that the more we see parents with littles in carriers and slings (especially bigger babies and toddlers) the more it will be normalised and inspire others to try it out or continue past newborn stage. In particular, I hope to inspire and support more black parents and carers to take up Babywearing. Just from our own journey alone we have got CJ's cousins, aunty and nana involved and learning how fun and easy it can be to carry a little one! My poor baby is a little baby is under the weather. I will just keep her close to me. I care for my aunt who has dementia and she is currently sick. Although I kept her and the baby apart for a week. It’s Election Day! I took my 3 littles with me this morning to go vote. I had my 2 y/o toddler in a rucksack back carry in this beautiful woven wrap from @littlefrog_pl . I love back carries b/c they are so convenient! ❤️ My toddler did not run all over the place or try to push buttons on my ballot & I was able to focus on educating my 2 older kids on the voting process. 💪🏽👍🏽 So yes, it IS still possible to carry your toddler. And yes, it IS comfortable — in a back carry, IMO. 🤗 I typically back carry with a soft-structured carrier (SSC - aka buckle carrier - I use a Boba) for simplicity and quickness. And when I had to readjust my toddler in this wrap today b/c she squirmed out of her seat, it didn’t take me long to readjust (in this case, I had to re-wrap). 👍🏽 Keep practicing and try different carriers! But just know that you CAN still wear toddlers and you DO have options! 💁🏽♀️

Spent the day on Roosevelt Island yesterday. . . What a joy to raise my children in this city, full of so much wonder and magic. . . . If you watch my stories (which you should- it all goes down in stories 🤣) you know I recently started wearing Dakota again after a long break. But baby and now toddler wearing has been so prevalent throughout my motherhood journey. For cooking, cleaning, nursing, adventuring around the city- baby wearing has changed my life. Baby Wearing! . Such a great tool for all parents- to keep baby close and have their essential needs met while having a hands free experience to get on with daily life and activities . I have a good knowledge on the various types that you can get started with and own a few myself. Its also covered in great detail in our wonderful #dynamodoula training from the lovely @brookemaree.babywearing . As part of my doula support, I include baby wearing/sling support and demonstration with how to get started and how to tweak things for a comfy and safe fit for you and your baby . Remember, it isn't rocket science and it is not a new 'thing' that only experts or trained people can do. But definitely tap into resources and people out there to get some help if you need it. . Sling libraries such as @itsaslingthing even lend them out to try for a reasonable cost at home for a few weeks before jumping in to buy one . Its NOT for hippies or a certain race/culture. It can be great for SO many people and does not have to hurt your back . All traditional cultures, including my own African roots, have carried thier babies in some form accross the world for millenia.. What would not be acceptable as safe in the west would be perfectly fine in a non westernised country so its useful to keep it in mind when a relative has shown you a special way to carry that is not 'usual' . I became a doula because there’s a mighty need for support in the birthing community. I became a doula because I am mad. I became a doula because I am passionate. I became a doula to save lives, and in part, to hold babies. I want to end the privatization of information. I want to spread the word about Doulas, any of us, all of us; ultimately, everyone should have a doula. That is my dream. America is the ONLY country in the developed world with a rising morbidity rate. I’m disgusted by that, and inspired by that. It is my hearts desire to see change by the time my own son is ready to give his future family a life. I want to leave this world better than when I came into it.

I just finished my final edits on an article. At the beginning, working with the magazine's editor was daunting. I was nervous. I lacked confidence. I wasn't sure if I would still be able to write anything good while sleep deprived with a newborn.
