Wild Thing - I Think I Love You! Just about finished this crazy, colorful wildcat. And, ever since I started painting this big guy, there has been a huge mountain lion around. This is exciting – but, I have to admit, just a bit intimidating too. Maybe he is checking on the progress of his painting? I sure hope he likes his colors! Here is an interesting fact! The mountain lion, cougar, catamount, panther, puma (all names for a mountain lion) is a keystone species and next to the jaguar, the mountain lion is the largest wildcat in North America. But, unlike the African Lion and the Jaguar, a Mountain Lion cannot roar, But, they purr, and boy do they purr! The snow made shed hunting on our Nebraska trip nearly impossible, but it did make finding lion tracks possible. This isn’t the first lion sign I’ve found, but I think it’s the first set of tracks I’ve seen. The rancher told @calebleedrake and me that there was a lion or two living in the hills on the ranch where we were looking for sheds. He actually got to assist the Nebraska Game & Parks Commission with radio collaring two lions a few years ago, one of which is featured in the final picture in this post. Nate (the rancher) told me that the next time the biologists got a ping from that tom’s collar he was in the Springfield, IL area! I love mountain lions; I have seen seven in the wild at my beloved Ramrod Ranch. They are my spirit animal! The mountain lion enclosure at the Oakland Zoo faces directly east, so it is tough to photograph them. They are back-lighted during sunny weather, and only silhouettes are possible. Thus, we hurry to the upper level via the Gondola before the fog or cloud cover burns off for my Peninsula Camera Club Wildlife Class. Diffused light is the photographer’s friend, and dappled lighting is the photographer’s enemy. Also, with zoo photography, I try primarily for portraits, eliminating the man-made elements of the enclosures. I added my 1.4 x RF teleconverter to my 100—500 zoom telephoto lens to help me get tight-framed subjects or portraits of the zoo animals. ABOUT: The cougar, also known as the panther, mountain lion, catamount, or puma, is a large cat native to the Americas, second in size only to the stockier jaguar. Its range spans the Canadian Territory of Yukon, Provinces British Columbia and Alberta, the Rocky Mountains, and other areas in the Western United States. We're moving into what is shaping up to be our final weekend of the winter season. We have received several inches of snow in today's storm so far and plan to reopen tomorrow, Friday April 5th from 9am to 4pm. We will be open Friday through Sunday - operations on Sunday are currently tentative based upon conditions over the next couple of days. He was bowhunting in Wisconsin, when all of a sudden he saw a cougar about 40 yards away looking right at him. Karasch tried scaring the animal off by waving his arms and yelling, but the cougar kept creeping towards him, closer and closer.
