Reviewing these two together, as there are many parallels. If you like children’s illustration, you’ve probably heard of Gyo Fujikawa, but Tyrus Wong? Probably not. Tyrus was a Chinese boy who immigrated to the US in the early 1900s, a time when the US government barred almost all Chinese immigrants from entry. The exceptions were “people of note,” which gave birth to “paper children,” meaning assumed identities that were more illustrious on paper than in reality. Tyrus was interrogated as a child entering Ellis Island, but he’d memorized his fake background well and was granted entry. Eventually he worked for Walt Disney where his style set the tone for the background artwork of Bambi! Disney then fired him during a strike, despite the fact that Tyrus didn’t join the strike. (Oh! He also studied at Otis, an art school in LA that both Jonas and I toured, but ultimately didn’t attend $$$. Tyrus worked as a janitor there to help pay his way). Gyo Fujikawa also worked for Disney, and it was her work for the studio that took her to the East Coast, which helped her escape the Japanese internment camps on the West Coast during WW2. Her family was locked up. The book covers how that experience affected her in more depth, but one thing I didn’t know was that her famous, multiracial baby drawings were one of the absolute first examples of interracial children’s books in the early 60s. Her publisher wouldn’t print it at first, but when she didn’t give in, they did, and her first book was a huge success! Sakamoto's Swim Club by Julie Abery Soichi Sakamoto created a swimming club in 1937 for the children of sugar plantation workers in Maui. He had a plan. His goal was to train them to swim and attend the 1940 Olympics. Sakamoto, a local science teacher with no formal training, created swimming interval training. Did you know that the leading artist was a Chinese American, Tyrus Wong? He found his inspiration from the hours of calligraphy he practiced as a child and in classical Chinese art from the Song Dynasty. Tyrus' dreamy and sweeping landscapes was the look that became Bambi's signature look. Tyrus Wong, despite his artistic influence, was only credited as a background artist. In a time where Chinese men were often allocated to jobs as a servant, laundryman, and waiter, and in a field where few people of color were, he faced racial bias at every turn. He was also later fired from Disney after an employee strike even though he did not participate. Asian Americans have been an integral part of American culture. His imprisonment in Angel Island as a child, where he had to answer interrogation questions about the number of windows in his house and the number of steps from door to door, was the experience of 50,000 immigrants. His story is American history and I'm grateful that this book tells it. This story is also why I am also so grateful for #ownvoicesauthors who write picture book biographies, and are able to authentically uplift and tenderly tell stories of history wrought with hardship, racism, and of triumph and light. @jleungbook's family is from a village just 40 miles from Taishan, where Tyrus and his dad are from. There is a subtle but essential nuance that is often captured beautifully. This book, with its gorgeous and moving artwork is a stellar example of such. After the Gold Rush between 1848 and 1855, anti-Chinese and anti-immigrant sentiments was rampant. Public opinion and laws was wrought with racism, and the exclusion of Chinese migrant workers from immigration lasted until it was officially repealed in 1942, lasting 61 years. 🌟

Hello, friends! Our book today is ANIMAL ARCHITECTS, written by Amy Cherrix and illustrated by Chris Sasaki, a look at some remarkable creatures and their building skills. Have you ever heard of an animal building a trapdoor? Or body armor? Or a 30-foot skyscraper? If not, then you’ve not met the trapdoor spider, the carrier snail, or the termite! This beautiful, fact-filled nonfiction picture book spotlights eleven species in total, each with their own unique talent at crafting and construction. Readers can learn about beaver dams, prairie dog towns, gentoo penguin rock nests, and more. Awesome information with a few hiccups. Cherrix’s text is engaging and fun, and provides some genuinely fascinating facts about the featured creatures. Sasaki’s art is simply gorgeous, using bold brushstrokes and color schemes to create incredibly compelling nature scenes. However, the layout can be mildly confusing - each animal’s profile takes place over the course of a pair of two-page spreads, without any notable transitioning or segueing between them. This often creates a feeling of disorientation when moving from one critter to the next. Another review of this book also mentioned some factual errors in the section on honeybees, which is worth noting, especially in a nonfiction title. Otherwise, the length was fine for an elementary story time, and JJ did earnestly enjoy several of the animal’s talents and the artwork that represented them. Overall, this is an entertaining, visually striking, yet slightly flawed title; we still think it’s worth a look, especially for animal lovers. Baby Bookworm approved. Sakamoto’s Swim Club by Julie Abery, illustrated by Chris Sasaki Grades: PreK - 2 The true story about how a group of children who swam in the irrigation ditches at a sugar plantation on Maui went on to become internationally competitive swimmers. In the 1930s, while their parents worked in the sugar plantation fields, a group of children would escape the Hawaiian heat by swimming and playing in the irrigation ditches. When a local teacher noticed the children consistently getting in trouble, he offered to supervise and teach them to swim in those same ditches. The swimmers’ skills improved, and soon, they set their sights on the Olympics. This is a fantastic book about a little known part of Hawaii history - the Three Year Swim Club! The book is told through rhyming couplets, making it fun for younger students, yet tells such an interesting story that it could be used to introduce topics to older students (or maybe prompt them to write about a historic event in child-friendly couplets?). The illustrations are gorgeous - they convey so much movement and action, and really capture the beauty of Maui. The story itself is inspirational and will encourage more learning about this topic. We’ve finally graduated from only watching things that are animated, so he’s always curious on if the characters use their real names in shows or if it’s all just a ruse. 😂 I love that this applies to books now too. It was interesting explaining that the story of Soichi Sakamoto was in fact a real story, even if the pictures are illustrated. Sakamoto’s Swim Club is an inspirational story on how Soichi, a science teacher in Maui, became a master coach of Olympic athletes. This story begins when Soichi notices kids swimming in irrigation ditches of sugar plantations. They would swim until they were caught & forced to get out. Soichi decides to help fight for them to be allowed to swim in the water & eventually starts training them with a strict regimen. Finally there is a proper pool built in the town & this allows Soichi’s dream to grow. Eventually the Three-Year Swim Club is formed and the dream of becoming Olympic swimmers is even closer. ❤️ I really like that the text in this book is very short & to the point. The illustrations perfectly accompany the story & paint a bigger picture. It’s such a beautiful story! Paper Son written by @jleungbooks and illustrated by @christopher_sasaki tells the life of Tyrus Wong whose art in Bambi influenced many artists. The picture book does a lovely job telling a brief version of his life, and the art is gorgeous!!! I gushed over every page! Canadian experts speak about the lessons learned from the six-month pandemic and the future challenges for the country . Chris Sasaki, a writer from the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Toronto in Canada, recently wrote an article published in U of T News, in which he exposes the ideas of six professionals and lessons that the pandemic has taught to the country of the maple. According to the writer, the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over. However, he adds, “it has been with us long enough to clearly expose the failures, inequalities and deficiencies in virtually every sector of society . ” As a result, many have concluded that a “new normalcy ”rather than reverting to the status quo is needed. Despite being well educated in China, Tyrus’s dad, like many immigrants from China, could only work as a servant, a laundryman or a waiter to make a living in America. Without money to buy ink and paper, Tyrus used a brush and water to practice calligraphy on newspapers. . Graduated at the top of his class at the Otis Art Institute, Tyrus worked as an “in-betweener” at Walt Disney. Walt Disney loved Tyrus’s style of landscape paintings, and asked all his animators to follow. #Bambi was a groundbreaking success, yet Tyrus was only credited as a background artist and soon was fired after an employee strike which he was never a part of. But his story didn’t end here, he went on to work as a set designer for a few more films. Many years later, in 2001, Tyrus was awarded with the Disney Legends Award. . Immigrants like Mr. Wong paved the way for all Asian Americans who their hard work were often overlooked. In 6 jaar tijd zijn mijn kids en ik 3 keer verhuisd. Ik moet lang wennen bij veranderingen, dus voor mij voelt 3 keer verhuizen als vaak aan. En ook voor mijn kinderen had ik deze optelsom niet verwacht. Maar zo lopen dingen soms en mag je weer wennen aan een nieuwe omgeving. En voor dat wennen, of beter gezegd, voor dat thuisgevoel hebben wij thuis iets heel moois. In onze gang hebben wij behang met allemaal schilderijlijstjes. En die lijstjes vullen wij nu op met allemaal mooie herinneringen. Foto’s van uitjes , foto’s van lieve mensen om ons heen en foto’s van dierbaren die er niet meer zijn, maar voortleven in onze harten en verhalen. Paper sons and daughters only existed quite literally on paper, in order to come into the united states. I taught my students about Angel Island recently, & found this book for super cheap on @bookoutlet so i am reading it slowly to them. They are fascinated with stories, especially real ones. Paper Son is about how Tyrus Wong’s story and history played an integral part in illustrating Bambi, but he never got true credit until much later.
9-year-old Tyrus Wong sailed from America to China memorizing the details of another boy's life. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 prohibited the immigration of Chinese laborers. As a result, Wong became a "paper son", taking on the identity of a merchant's son in order to immigrate to America. Wong attended art school and worked for Walt Disney. One of his greatest achievements was the creation of impressionistic landscapes that would inspire the movie "Bambi". De korte zinnen hebben zelfs een poëtisch tintje, naast dat de begrippen thuis en huis een filosofische lading aan het geheel geven. Vragen zoals 'Waar heb jij afscheid van genomen?' of 'Waar en waardoor voel jij je thuis?' kunnen worden gesteld na het samen lezen van dit prentenboek. • Een mooi bijzonder prentenboek dat je laat nadenken, je doet beseffen wat je hebt en wat voor een ander een wens kan zijn.
