I was listening to Isreali Indologist David Shulman's lecture on the topic "How to Put Together a Goddess out of Musical Scales" in which he illustrates esoteric ways of worship, using Muthuswami Dikshitar's Neelotpalamba Navavarna Kritis. He says there are several methods to invoke a goddess and one of it is through music. Very fascinating lecture. For all those interested, it is available on YouTube. The lecture resonated very much with me, especially because the Sree Bhagavati ritual aspires to do the same, to invoke the goddess by connecting the worshipper to be more observant and mindful about Nature and art. This was a book that was lying on my "to be read" pile for over six years. I finally finished reading it last month. It left me feeling both proud and ashamed,in equal measure. How's that possible you ask? Well, I was proud to learn that the Tamil language had such a glorious heritage,and was ashamed of the fact that I was largely ignorant of it. The book extols the virtues of #Tamil, without exaggeration. It traces its origins,from its earliest available written records, while also recounting legends associated with its mythical origins. Most notably it provides a good idea about the relationship of Tamil with several other dominant languages, especially #Sanskrit,in all its years of existence. Several examples of beautiful poetry,along with translations are provided. The influence of different regimes on the language are also explored. The role of religious literature in shaping and reviving Tamil has also been explained. Specifically,the strong relationship between the #Hindu religion and the Tamil language,and how they mutually strengthened each other has been dealt with at length. This book was definitely not easy to read,for multiple reasons. Firstly the standard of English was itself quite high. Additionally,there were several #linguistic terms that made no sense to me and I was forced to look them up. I am not in the least qualified to comment on the technical aspects of the book, however I can say with conviction that it challenges any preconceived notions one might have about the Tamil language, having experienced it first-hand. This book also helps fill the void that conventional school history textbooks contain, when it comes to #South #Indian history,as it recounts notable rulers and their military campaigns and trade relations, which extended Tamil's reach to much beyond #India's borders-over a millennium ago! The book has been written without any biases,as it is authored by an eminent Israeli #linguist,who has no reason to favour/criticise Tamil beyond proportion. "Tamil Temple Myths: Sacrifice and Divine Marriage in the South Indian Saiva Tradition" by David Shulman| Princeton University Press | 1980 The story of how I got the above book begins with my coming across its mention in another book (Vithal of Pandharpur by R. Dhere) that I shared on my IG story a few days back. . If the title "Tamil Temple Myths..." intrigued me, Dhere’s glowing mention of this book sealed it for me — I wanted to buy the book. I had to have a copy of this book. . And so the hunt began... . The prices on e-commerce sites were unbelievably high and though a couple of bookstores that I frequent gave me a lower quote, the book was still unaffordable. That's when I turned to #JSTOR (the University I'm employed with has a membership that I use) to see if they had a copy available. JSTOR did have an e-copy, but unfortunately for me the publications of Princeton University Press (the publisher) were not part of the membership. I didn't give up and turned to my University Librarian, Satish, for help. Can you believe that less than 24 hours after I put in my request, this book was on my table? Satish got this book from the International Institute of Population Studies on an Inter-Library Loan, and the book is mine for the next 15 days. On flipping though the pages, I see that the book was purchased in the early 1980s for Rs.250/- and has never, ever been issued. Of course, what a book like this is doing in a Library that houses books on Population Studies and Demography is a mystery. The mind boggles ! I have already started reading "Tamil Temple Myths" having put aside all the other reading that I was in the midst of. The next fortnight will be devoted to reading this book, taking notes and references, writing down quotes, and maybe photocopying the relevant pages. . I am ecstatic with delight at this prospect. 😁

Jean-Michel Basquiat, the New York graffiti artist turned ’80s art world rock star who died 30 years ago (August 12, 1988) will be profiled as part of the PBS documentary series American Masters “Artists Flight.” One of the most influential American artists of the 20th century, Jean-Michel Basquiat was a rock star of the early ’80s New York art scene. He lived fast, died young and created thousands of drawings and paintings. It took less than a decade for Basquiat, an accountant’s son from Brooklyn, to go from anonymous graffiti writer known as SAMO© to an epoch-defining art star. Today, Basquiat is in the top tier of the international art market along with Picasso, de Kooning, and Francis Bacon. 2018 marks the 30th anniversary of Basquiat’s untimely death from a heroin overdose. In death, he has emerged as one of the most important artists of his generation and now exhibits in museums all over the world.
