ΰ€ β Anandabhairavi "Eesam anandamayam atmanam upasankramaya" - know that the Truth is bliss Ananda β Eternal bliss and Bhairavi - Awe inspiring Anandabhairavi is a janya rΔgam (derived scale) of the 20th Melakarta rΔgam Natabhairavi, although some suggest that it is janya of 22nd melakarta Kharaharapriya. The aesthetic effects of Anandabhairavi are blissful and ethereal. It evokes Karuna, Bhakthi, Shringara rasas. Syama Sastri of the musical Trinity made this raga predominant and pre-eminent. He exhibits spontaneous indulgence in handling this raga. Anandabhairavi was used in Tevarams (Tamil bhakti hymns) performed in the temples of South India in the past. This inevitably cast its spell on the young Syama Sastri who was a frequent visitor of these temples. Captivated by this raga he composed some of the majestic compositions like βO Jagadamaβ, βMarivere gatiβ, and seven more. These are some of the finest examples of the Anandabhairavi. While there are a plethora of songs composed in this raga, βSami ni paiβ by Veena Kuppayyar and βNike Teliyakaβ by Saint Thyagaraja stand out tall. The Anandabhairavi has known to be used as a therapeutic tool for pain management in post-operative care. It is interesting to note that the Suddhangam of most of the Tiruvisaippa hymns is being rendered in Anandabhairavi. The raga, having a profound expression of its own is immensely suited for singing sankeertanas, slokas, viruttams, and padyas and is used largely in operatic tradition on account of its rich aesthetic feeling. It is said that the correct rendering of the Anandabhairavi has the power to help the mindβs eye to visualize the Mother of the Universe. This saint came up in my coffee conversation yesterday. I am planning to listen and sing his compositions today. The topic was triggered by Akilandeswari Rakshamam : Dikshithar Kriti Raaga dvijaavanti. This composition sung by MS has been a regular Vinyl played in my house growing up. But it happens to be a difficult composition to master in the Veena, which my grandmother could play from age13 years on! Talk about passion, perseverance and Bhakti towards music. She had to give up playing as 7 kids and managing a joint family of some 30 people took over her life. Now that is a post for another day.
