More 100 year old Bordeaux. 1924 Domaine de Chevalier has gravel, minerals and flint in the nose and a leathery smoked taste. It is very pleasant and does not behave as you would expect from someone who could have been retired ages ago (93 points). 1924 Lagrange has a bit sourness in the nose and the taste is old and decayed. It gets a little better in the glass but here you can feel the age. Note the great old label where the vintage is stated on the flags of the soldiers (85 points).

Marques de Murrieta Pazo de Barrantes Albariño 2020 Domaine de Chevalier 1998 Haut Batailley 1996 Was initially taken aback by the Pazo Barrantes as it seemed to have much more in common with the Condrieu from the previous day than what I’m used to from the region, which is typically more focused on minerality and freshness (smells of the sea in my mind). This was redolent of peaches and apricots and was incredibly expansive and rich. Apparently it sees fairly long lees aging and a touch of oak, which gives it a dense and oily texture not dissimilar to what I commented about the Condrieu. There is enough acidity to make it work and I think this is objectively a well made wine bearing in mind the target style, but I thought I would have enjoyed it better if the nose wasn’t quite so tropical. Probably one of the better values on the list at $160. Was busy and decanted the reds a bit late, so they only got an hour before double decanting back into the bottle and bringing for dinner. The DDC was a bit more expressive initially but then retreated back into its shell shortly after actually starting to drink it. A pity as the palate was certainly elegant and long enough. First bottle of the Haut Batailley was corked and went down the sink. Second bottle clean but also in an awkward phase, felt a bit too green and also too uptight to be truly enjoyable. Just a bit of pencil to give some typicite. Apparently this was an outstanding vintage for them but this is the second bottle that I’ve failed to be wowed by (as opposed to for eg the 89 en magnum which was classy AF). 4 more so perhaps shall give them some time to see if it’s just a phase. New chef at the resto, menu is more concise and actually much better executed. Worth a visit if one utilizes the AMEX discount, otherwise still a little pricey.

Speaking of #2012vintage #bordeauxs, throwback to an Easter weekend evening at our good friends’ place. Decanted this #domainedechevalier #pessacleognan #grandcruclasse for an hour prior to serving. For want of a better word, this was incredibly feminine - yes, it has the fruit, complexity and is starting to have those tertiary notes already, but it doesn’t shout about it and you discover all of that as it swirls around the mouth with elegance and an almost palate cleansing silkiness. The 2012’s are looking good so far … !

Old Bordeaux Night. Found a forgotten bottle of Pape Clement 1988 and decided to share it. Forgot to bring an Ah So opener, actually, I think I should get a Durand, picture 2 is the result. 😂😂. Don’t look professional but is actually pretty well done as we don’t have any cork in the bottle. I am amazed! The drinking window is perfect. Love the tobacco leaf aroma and the smokiness, we all agreed that this is the wine of the evening. The Pavie 2003 still have bright fruits on the palate with good structure. I guess left bank due to the tannin. A very well made wine for a hot vintage. Extremely lucky to taste this bottle as my client only open 1 bottle a year to see how the wine evolve. Domaine Chevalier 2011 still young as compared to the above wines, but is showing nicely. 1970 Domaine de Chevalier has saturated, fully mature chestnut ruby, fading towards mahogany rim. Spiciness with lifted, classic Claret perfume of smoke, cassis, shoe polish, fish oil, and dark cherry preserves with damp earth and graphite minerals. The flavor is pure and mellow, with a fully integrated and tender structure, featuring blue and black cherries, smoke, graphite, cinnamon, and cassis. Fantastic sequence, and harmony between acidity, alcohol, and tannins provide plenty of moreish, satisfactory residue, especially in the mid and back palate. Shared some Bordeaux with a bunch of high-school friends (all bottles from me except the ‘90 Haut-Bailly, ‘00 DDC, ‘19 Tiberio and ‘06 Marc Colin). Glad to have shown three things that I have been banging on about: (i) Bordeaux needs a minimum of 20 years to come around and even unfashionable producers can age effortlessly, (ii) the golden era of Bordeaux was the ‘80s and ‘90s, the movement towards Parkerized wines was evident in the post-2000 wines, (iii) for the quality of wines you can get, Bordeaux represent great value (the 9 wines that I brought averaged out to be S$130 per bottle). And of course the usual amazing meats by @keehuat77 1995 Château Beychevelle Think I liked this more than others did but then again I am a sucker for nose over palate. Beautiful, explosive aromas of coffee, spice and berries, rare to get such an intoxicating nose in Bordeaux. Palate was suave and balanced with toasted oak notes and dark cherry fruit, but just lacking a little depth to be a complete wine. 1995 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste The complete opposite of the Beychevelle, but equally lovable. GPL to me represents the archetypal workhorse Bordeaux, and in good vintages they can possess serious depth as was the case here. Not as silky as the Beychevelle alongside but much more structure and tension holding the wine together. 1996 Château La Tour Haut-Brion Based on previous notes this wine suffers from bottle variation but fortunately I drew the long end of the stick for this bottle. Savoury leather and deep tobacco notes, some Chinese tea. Very representative of Graves. Terrific length. 1996 Château Branaire (Duluc-Ducru) Both Branaires showed similarly and punched well above their weight. Old-school in a good way with a little brett and rusticity that benefited rather than detracted from the wine, energetic dark red fruit for its age. In a great spot.
A "no brainer" (safe bet) for shure... lamb, potatoe-gratin and a bottle of good red bordeaux. One of my old favourite reds from Pessac-Leognan; Domaine de Chevalier (have visited this domaine 1998). This 2003 (hot year) has some typiclal notes of black cherries, cassis, tobacco + some barnyard notes, dark chocolate and earth (gravel). Palate: Licorice, lead, minerals, some dark fruit, cedar, blood, earthy notes and spice. Best after hours in a decanter otherwise too much tannin structure and acidity. 2018 Domaine de Chevalier - Pessac-Lèognan - This is one of our favorite estates in Graves. There is such harmony between the white and the red. We enjoyed the 2018 at @totovinbar ✌🏻 The colour is dark red with a more deep core. The nose was open and full of juicy red berries like cherries, red currant and then cassis. With more air came green bell peppers and charcoal. On the palate the wines was very soft and more elegant then expected. This is juicy no doubt but also very cool style that we perhaps did not expect from the 2018 vintage. It is a wine in total harmony and drinks very well at this early stage. Con diversi tagli di carne, decidiamo di abbinare questo Bordeaux di Pessac-Léognan, che personalmente apprezzo molto. Matura circa 18 mesi in botti di legno. Nel calice è rosso rubino scuro. Lo abbiamo trovato morbido ed elegante nel naso, persistente e dalla ottima struttura sul palato. Profumo di ribes rosso maturo, mora, mirtillo, grafite tabacco ed erbe. In bocca un corpo medio-pieno, tannini vellutati ed un’acidità vibrante; note di bacche nere, prugna, cioccolato, vaniglia, amarena e spezie dolci. 🇬🇧 For our last night in Shanghai, we decide to have dinner at Morton’s. With several cuts of meat, we decide to pair this Pessac-Léognan Bordeaux, which I personally like very much. It ages about 18 months in wooden barrels. In the glass it is dark ruby red. We found it soft and elegant in the nose, persistent and with excellent structure on the palate. Scent of ripe red currant, blackberry, blueberry, graphite tobacco and herbs. 2009 Poujeaux displays a vivid character with lots of fruity cassis and strong peppery elements and is not a soft textbook ‘09. It is however a strong effort and a very good glass of wine that still needs some time to come around (91+ points). 2012 Domaine de Chevalier is soft and forthcoming and is drinking very well now. It has lots of glycerin, and a juicy fruity character with hints of cedar wood and decaying leaves This vintage was particularly good in the Graves region and most wines are ready now (93 points).

Tessa The Wine Heeler popped open a bottle of the 2018 L’Esprit de Chevalier on this chilly evening — this is the 2nd wine of Domaine de Chevalier from Pessac-Leognan in Bordeaux and one of her favorite wines and wine regions. While still quite young, this wine is just lovely - dark, dense, pomegranate-purple in the glass; a heady nose of sweet cassis, black currents, bitter cocoa, cedar, and wet earth; full-bodied yet elegant in the snout, there are tons of red and black berries, bittersweet chocolate, spices, minerals, and a very long, silky, fruit-laden finish.
