Talking to students about veganism is an on-going conversation. It’s important to be truthful without traumatizing them. A powerful way for kids to understand the ethical aspects of veganism is to visit a local animal sanctuary, where they can connect with the individual animals. Students are empowered when given actions they can take to make a difference. This particular 6th grader claimed that he was vegetarian and was wearing his “Don’t Eat the Homies” hoodie. Someday he will understand about the cruelties of the egg and dairy industry and will not want to contribute to it. For now, he is planting seeds. Today is #nationaladoptashelterpetday 🙏🏽 There are thousands of animals looking for their forever homes in shelters & in foster care. Unfortunately, many rescues are struggling because breeders keep breeding & folks for one reason or another continue to relinquish their animals or even dump them anywhere outside at an alarming rate. If you are in a place to do so, I invite you to consider adopting, or fostering an animal. Consider the ones that don’t typically get picked first. Rabbits, dogs, & cats that are solid black often stay in shelters the longest because people think they are bad luck or because they are tough to photograph. Seriously. White bunnies are sometimes considered evil thanks to depictions in film & television. You know, make believe. 🙄 And elder animals need love too. Can you imagine spending 9+ years of your life with your family then one day, they decide that your aging body is too inconvenient for them? Wow. Let’s not be those humans. Tripods, animals with wheelchairs, a rip in their ear or even missing ears, are worthy of love & compassion too. And don’t forget about smaller animals like rats, mice, guinea pigs, hamsters, prairie dogs, sugar gliders & all the birds, fish & lizards! 🤍 (Okay, maybe some lizards are not so small. 😅) I know sometimes life kicks us in the butt & folks might have no other choice but to relinquish their beloved animal. That happens too & it’s heartbreaking. Something else I see, is that folks underestimate the time, money, & work involved in properly caring for an animal. Especially bunnies. This is why fostering could be a great way to have support of the shelter while exploring if that animal might be a good fit for you & your lifestyle. Another way to support shelter animals is to share their adoption posts! Their future forever home could be one of your friends or followers! Day 13 #earthlove2024 Nonprofits. 2019 was a year of terrible loss that included the death of my mother, my mother in law, and both of my beloved Dobermans. I have never felt so utterly torn and broken. I came across a local nonprofit called West Coast Minis (no IG page but you can find them on FB) that rescues mini horses from slaughter. It was at this ranch where my therapy began. I groomed and talked to these tiny horses. I shoveled shit and hauled hay. During the times I spent there, I thought of nothing else, and my pain subsided. I am grateful for the kind of healing that only being around animals can give ♥️ My heart supports organizations that care for animals and the ocean. A few nonprofits that I follow closely include my local chapter of the Audubon Society, because I’m a #birdnerd ; @friends_of_coos_county_animals cuz that where I found my boy Jax; odd man inn and @heartwoodhaven are animal (primarily pig) rescues and sanctuaries; @nwdogproject cuz I love the doggos. Also @oregonshorescc and @surfrider doing work in Oregon and beyond to protect our coastlines. Creamy, Dreamy Beans & Greens is a new recipe for me - inspired by various vegan IG accounts (thank you to all of the creative vegan chefs out there!). I try to do a savory 3 day prep for breakfast, and this is going to be a new addition to the rotation. Broth: Better Than Bouillon @betterthanbouillon Vegetable Base (2/3 tablespoon), about 2.5 cups of water, cornstarch to thicken, add salt now or later (I do later to adjust for taste) Beans & Greens: One heaping pile of kale, a generous amount of spinach (I used chopped frozen), 1-2 cans of Great northern beans (chickpeas would also work), 1/2 cup chopped yellow or sweet onion, a splash of avocado oil (optional), 1/2 tablespoon dried thyme, 1/2 tablespoon turmeric, 1/2 tablespoon garlic powder, 1/2 cup nutritional yeast Side: Dave’s Killer English Muffin w/ vegan butter @countrycrock Cook it up: 1. Prep your veggies 2. Add water to a bowl with bouillon and about a tablespoon of cornstarch - whisk or stir vigorously with fork. I like to microwave the water a bit to help the bouillon dissolve before adding the cornstarch, but you do you. 3. Sauté onion in water and/or avocado oil until translucent - choose a large enough sauté pan 4. Add water/bouillon/cornstarch and stir 5. Drain 50% of the liquid from the beans and throw those into the pool and stir 6. Add spinach and kale and stir until they start cooking down 7. Add nutritional yeast, turmeric, thyme, garlic powder, salt, and whatever other spices your plant-based heart desires 8. Simmer 12-15 minutes uncovered on low, adjusting water and salt as necessary. If broth is too thin, add a bit more cornstarch whisked in water (use a separate bowl) or add more nutritional yeast 9. Enjoy with bread of choice or serve over quinoa for a lower carb option One pot. Affordable. Flavorful. Tasty. Easy to make. Nutritious. What day is it you ask? You already know! It’s #WaylonWednesday 😍 We want to talk again about the importance of considering new animals into your home. 99% of the time, dogs and pigs DO NOT MIX. They are different species who speak different languages and have different bodily capabilities. In many cases, like Waylon’s, pigs will end up being severely hurt by dogs, and losing ears, like Waylon did. Pigs have known to be scarred, lose ears, tails, massive injuries, even death by dogs, and can happen with even the friendliest of dogs. Pigs are stubborn and pushy and eventually dogs get tired of being pushed around and snap back. With no canines to defend themselves from dog attacks; pigs are always on the losing end. Please be cautious and smart and make sure if you choose to add a pig to your family, you have the proper resources to give them their own space, for everyone’s safety.
