These are a few photos of some things to look out for when fossil hunting on Dorsets Jurrasic coast. These were all found on Charmouth. They are all partial finds, but for those trying to learn new things, it's a great place to start. Fossil hunting is all about patience, perseverance, and learning what to look for with your eyes. Once you've seen one, they tend to start popping out at you more. The images show in order 1. Section of a belemnite deathbed 2 and 3. Partial ammonites 3. Partial single belemnite 4. Baby shark These are all common finds along the Jurrasic coast. The main question I get asked by those interested in fossil hunting is, "How do you find them?" I'm hoping I can answer some of these questions through my images. I will start to take more insitu images on my hunts to share for others to learn further. The most important things to remember: Head out just before low tide to give you enough beach and time to hunt before that tide starts coming back in and potentially trapping you from your exit, be aware of the high tide times and watch out for the cliffs! Nothing unusual there you’d think. 🤔 However Rory’s been struggling for a while with lead reactivity, anxiety and being a teenager. We’ve been working really hard on lots of aspects of his life to help him, absorbing all the advice and help we can get from lots of sources and also working on my confidence to lead walk him anywhere that’s got other dogs around. Today he managed a 3 mile ish walk through town past lots of dogs and the Vets with other dogs around with NO meltdowns or panic woofs. This is honestly a massive deal for both him and me. #S #englishsparklingwines are predominantly made from the following vines: 🍇Chardonnay 🍇Pinot Noir 🍇Pinot Meunier 🍇Pinot Précoce 🍇Pinot Blanc 🍇Pinot Gris The first three varieties are the most commonly used and overlap with the traditional vines grown within the official #champagne designation, although four others (Arbane, Petit Meslier, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris) are also permitted📋 Vines need the right conditions to thrive and rely on the #terroir (a combination of environmental factors) to grow and develop🌎☀️🌾 These environmental conditions influence the taste and ultimate quality of the wine; so much so that very refined expert palettes can distinguish precisely where a wine started as a grape on a vine🌱 Much is made of the chalky soils in the south of England and it these soils along with a climate influenced by the Gulf Stream that contribute to #englishsparklingwine success. In #champagne the superior #vineyards are mostly on clay soils with chalk below. In geological terms the Kimmerdigian ridge has a part to play here. The ridge is made up of a mix of limestone and clay now rich in ammonites from the Jurassic Age🦕🦖 The ridge starts in the tiny Dorset spot of Kimmeridge (it is so small it is difficult to describe it as a village or even a hamlet!) 〰️runs underground to the white cliffs of Dover 〰️back underground until it pops up again in France 〰️and runs all the way through the wine regions of #champagne #loirevalley #chablis 〰️with hints also apparent in #pouillyfumé and #sancerre 🌞 The warming climate has helped revolutionise #englishwinemaking by enabling the soils to be taken advantage of and there being less risk of low yields or ruined crops due to bad weather.
