Ever since I was lucky enough to experience two otters playing around in the water on my canoeing trip last summer, I’ve been fascinated by these semi-aquatic hunters. Otter is a great teacher I must say - at least if you are willing to listen. Whenever I enter new areas where I want to stay for a while I have begun to look for track and sign of otter along the waters edge. As the main food source for otters comes from fish - often of a decent size - any spoor from otters tells me I can expect to catch fish here. If I find feeding stations I might even be able to get an idea about the types of fish. Are there large scales suggesting carpe, or only small scales suggesting perch and pike. However, otters don’t only consume fish - crayfish, freshwater snails and freshwater clams are also on the menu. By finding what otter leaves behind he tells me what I should be looking for to sustain myself. These are two of my fishing spears. A leister spear and a harpoon. The leister spear is made from birch, fallow deer bone, pine pitch glue, spruce roots and stinging nettle cordage. The harpoon is made from the leg bone of a fallow deer and some stinging nettle cordage is used to secure it to the shaft. By only attaching the point losely to the shaft it is allowed to come of, thus decreasing the chance of it breaking while the fish struggles. For anyone wanting to see them used in action, both types of fishing spear can be seen used by the inuit in the documentary series “Tuktu” found on youtube. There are many constraints in the modern world for people who just want to go out into nature and live with and off the land for periods at a time. One of them is acquiring enough calories to sustain the body. Although nature is filled with wild herbs and carbohydrate filled roots, protein sources can be difficult to get. Hunting and fishing with “primitive” technologies is often banned and as such we are often forced to forage for invertebrates like mussels, snails and clams. However, fishing with hooks is legal in most countries in the world and can provide us with much needed proteins and fat when living in the wild. My primitive fishing kit consists of three different types of hooks - gorge hooks, composite hooks, and bone hooks made of deer toe bones. My toe bone hooks are made from the toe bones of the roe deer I harvested last summer. Finally! The first edible plants start to emerge from below ground! The wild garlic (Allium ursinum) tastes - as the name suggests - a lot like garlic and contains 20-40 times as much vitamin C as a lemon! This makes it the perfect wild edible when living in the wild during late winter/early spring as it can help prevent scurvy. Wild garlic can be used as it is in many dishes like fried rice, with meats or in a salad. It can also be made into pesto, infused oil, dried or used for herb salt. However, wild garlic can easily be mistaken with Lily of the valley and more rarely with autumn crocus - both of which can be deadly. An easy way to identify wild garlic is by the smell which is, you guessed it, much like garlic! The other two don’t have this smell. When foraging wild garlic, or any other wild plant for that matter, it is important to uphold local laws and regulations as well as to gather consciously. Never take more than you need and never more than 30% of what you find. With death comes life and with life comes death. That’s the circle of life. That’s how it has always been. In todays modern age, many have been removed from the production of food and no longer understand the value of for example meat. Something has died for you to eat it. Its spirit has left it, gone, a life taken. There is a great responsibility in that. A responsibility to only take what we need and to use all that we can. This year I harvested one roedeer buck and one hare. It is not much, but they have fed me on many occations and continue to do so. They have provided me with skins, bones, sinew and more. I’ve loved tracking ever since I was a kid. Tracking allows us to “observe” animals we seldom see in the wild and we get a glimpse into their elusive lives. The tracks tell us a story - did the animal move from A to B? Did it stop on the way? Was it walking, loping, trotting or in a gallop? Did it feed on the way? Etc. The pictures in this post are from December 2023 where we had plenty of snow whereI live. I took advantage of this and went out to trail hares at the University Park. The pictures include: 1. A detailed set of footprints. 2. The normal Y pattern which is a key feature for Lagomorphs (rabbits and hares). 3. A front track. 4. A hind track. 5. A video where I catch up to the hare - notice how the distance between individual feet and between sets of Y’s becomes smaller, suggesting that the hare slowed down as it looked for a place to hide. 6. The bow and arrow has always been one of my favourite hunting tools due to its versatility. It is suited for taking both large and small game as well as fish 🏹 The bow in the picture is a 140cm, D section, osage orange self-bow with a 50# draw weight at 28’. I made the quiver from an American river otter fur and attached a carrying strap made of fallow deer buckskin and inserted a hazel dowel for stabilisation. The arrows I made from hazel sun-shoots, grey goose wing feathers and fallow deer leg sinew. My place was amazing today. Something about the gray and the green and the rushing of the river just made it extra beautiful. The birds this time of year are intensely loud. I have the Merlin app and it identified that there were two birds mainly causing all the commotion with a few more not singing as much, but there as well. Yellow warbler, American Goldfinch, Black capped chickadee and the House Wren. House wrens and warblers were the most prominent. I love those cute little wrens. Also saw a pretty big fight (or mating?) of grackles. Run down on the birds today. It helped calm me so much and then had to come home and even dealing with one person messes up my mental state. Maybe I need a comfortable cave somewhere??? Someone can surely delivery me some food every once and a while and I can just grow feral. #feralhuman #birds

What does living in a van or skoolie mean to you? To me it means being truly free, or as I like to call it, being a feral human. I'm just getting to where I care less and less about what others think, and about my own perceived ideas about things. I'm learning that everything we as humans think was brainwashed into us. Our thoughts are not our own. Every perception we have comes from the society we live in. It's already laid out for us to follow. Our perception of what is acceptable to eat, how we should look and act based on age, gender, and race, every tradition, our religion, our thoughts on government, everything. We are brainwashed from the day we are born to believe the things our parents think we should believe to be true and correct. As we get older, we rebel against some of it, but most of the core beliefs we've been taught are still deeply ingrained which include things like racism, homophobia, and many other negative learned and taught behaviors. Tomorrow night, I explore the Wolf Woman of Mobile! 🐺 In April 1971, sightings of a strange creature were reported around Mobile, Alabama. The bizarre animal appeared to have the head of a woman and the legs and torso of a wolf. One witness described what soon became known as the "Wolf Woman" as being “a woman and a wolf, pretty and hairy.” Reports came flooding into the local newspaper, The Mobile Register. Over the next week, the newspaper received at least 50 calls of encounters and sightings of the creature. It was seen running through local yards and it chased and stalked numerous residents. Local police took the investigations seriously because of the number of reports, in case it was a dangerous wild animal on the loose. Fortunately, no one was harmed by the creature. After 10 days of sightings, the Wolf Woman of Mobile disappeared and was never seen again. Was the Mobile Wolf Woman a Dogman-type creature or could it have been a feral human? Perhaps it was just a misidentified animal.
