On Sunday morning, I parked the car at 7.30am, north of Glenshee. It was snowing but I had put my faith - not for the first time - in the Met Office predictions of very good visibility by the time I’d made it to the plateau that leads to the summit of An Socach. When I arrived at that 930m mark, I could barely see Breagh on the lead in front of me. It can be disconcerting in that thick mist - I had no idea what lay in front of me and I’d only seen one other person. I knew he was there somewhere (he’s in these pictures), but we felt completely alone - enveloped by cloud as we zig-zagged our way across the plateau towards the top that I could see only on the GPS. As we approached the summit, the cloud blew away, revealing mountains to the west, the Cairngorms to the north and I could see where we’d been and our way home. I’ve come to love these solo walks. A rare, long high-level ridge traverse in the Highlands of 16km not dropping below 600m, yet not including a single Munro, Corbett or Graham. This was the ridge running from Meall Odhar to Carn Dallaig to the south west of Glen Shee and Glen Lochsie. It was an excellent route from the Spittal of Glenshee, starting and finishing on the Cateran Trail and taking in some tops to the SW of the ridge on the return leg. Hardly a surprise, but I didn’t see a soul today. I manifested a sense of abject pessimism all week facing a forecast for persistent rain and gales, so to have an actually pretty good walking day, with a bit of snow, but nothing dramatic or uncomfortable, was absolutely great. A well picked location and route (I could have crawled to the first munro summit at least) and setting off at the crack of dawn helped to avoid the worst of the weather! Couple of nice short walks yesterday evening and this morning. I couldn't waste such a beautiful evening so I did an easy 3 Munro circuit from Glenshee ski centre. Came across a nice looking pond on the way to the second Munro, and on the way back I found the call of the water too strong. I didn't have my costume with me but I wasn't going to let that stop me ;) After a short dip it was on to the last Munro where I made it just in time to sit and watch the sunset 🌄 a wonderful experience all round ❤️ Today's forecast is again pretty awful, back in the van now being shaken by the wind. The best of the weather was due this morning so I got out 'early' and did another short loop. George Melvin Rennie studied part time at Gray’s School of Art under James Hector, and at the Aberdeen School of Art. In 1924 he opened a studio in Braemar, remaining there until retiring to Edinburgh in 1948. A lover of hills & glens, which he explored on foot, he captured the atmospheric effects and the colours of the region more accurately than any other local artist, before or since. Among his commissioned work was a view of Birkhall House for Queen Mary and some large murals for a restaurant in Aberdeen. Apart from an occasional exhibit at the Aberdeen Artists’ Society annual show and at Paisley Art Institute he exhibited little, preferring to sell his work direct to private buyers. He died in Edinburgh in 1953. My favourite place I’ve spent a night. . And I don’t mean ‘on this trip’ - I mean Ever. It sounds too good to be true, but the entire evening and morning was simply perfect, we were almost annoyed as we felt we may have peaked too soon! . Firstly; where were we? Well we were on the A93, a mile or so past Glenshee ski center heading towards Braemar, just in a large lay-by that we had all to ourselves found using the app; Park4night which is an absolute must if you have a motorhome, Van, car camper or vehicle mounted tent and want to do this ‘off grid’ style of park up. . The views were stunning, the evening was clear and dry and the stars came out, the morning was bright and sunny casting some amazing light on the surrounding snowcapped mountains and the road was quiet with just a few vehicles overnight and the background tinkle of the Clunie water provided a soothing soundtrack as well as water for our tea and coffee. It got down to -2° up there over night, but were were all snug and warm in the Latitude Pioneer XL tent, even a very brief sleet/snow storm happened just to give us the full rounded experience. . It’s the place and situation I think about most from the entire week. It will never be replicated, it sounds way too good to be true but on this occasion, It’s totally factual and @hayleynovell will confirm. Sporting the wind swept, sleet soaked look while filming some of the fleet up in Glenshee yesterday! This is the reason why Scottish women don’t bother to do their hair in any fancy styles for 5 months of the year…or that’s my excuse! We have such a laugh when out and about creating reels etc….but damn…do we have to pick the coldest place in Scotland 😂🤣 of course we do!!!
