Goatfell from the mountain indicator viewpoint on the Brodick to Lamlash walk. At 874 metres (2,867 ft), it is one of four Corbetts on the island. Goatfell summit views on a clear day are magnificent with panoramic views across the dramatic granite ridges. The mountain, along with nearby Brodick Castle, is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland. From the boat you can head along the promenade before picking up the Fisherman’s walk and subsequently one of the Goatfell ascent routes. Quick jaunt up to the Fannichs (south of Ullapool) on Saturday night, late season northerlies bringing negative temps overnight and some wintry weather on the hills including a wonderful hour of sideways driven snow - it was fairly roasting in sun further down. 1. Sgurr Bhreac (999m) 2. Still corniced Sgùrr nan Clach Geala (1093m) (hill of the white stones) , the scale of the crags plunging down towards Coire Mor gives some food for thought on whether to trust steps on snow, not wanting to experiment with extra quick descent routes… 3. Winding round the east face of Sgurr nan Clach Geala 4. Ptarmigan, probably wishing they’d kept their winter plumage a little longer later on 5. Remaining snow leading down to Loch a’Mhadaidh (loch of the wolf/fox) 6. North east towards Beinn Dearg 7. Sgurr nan Each (923m) (peak of the horses) 8. Creag Leacach 988.2m Glas Maol 1068m Today didn't fully end up going to plan but still ended up with Munros 28 and 29. The plan was to do the Glas Maol circuit taking in 6 Munros but ended up with the Glas Maol 2! Initial plan for today was for a bit of Donald bagging but last minute decided on a trip up to Glenshee to bag a few Munros plus I fancied a really long day out on the hills. The weather forecast meant that getting in all 6 Munros was very doubtful. After parking up I was pretty certain I could get 2 Munros but the weather was clearly going to be a factor. Creag Leacach was reached quickly while heading over to Glas Maol the snow arrived. At the summit heart said crack on only 8 more miles and 1400ft of ascent to get the other 4 Munros but head said time to get off this hill sharpish. I had a couple of escape routes plotted out before hand. The wind had really picked up and with the snow it was pretty vile. Made it safely back and it was still a fantastic day. It was also 2 of the most straightforward Munros I have done with only 1600ft of ascent! Which in hill climbing terms is a gentle wander up a small incline. #scotlandinsta #scottishscenery #munros #scottishhillwalking #munrobaggingmoments

The (old) Douglas Hotel, Brodick, Arran. Both locals and tourists alike have fond memories of time spent at The Douglas Hotel, which has played host to generations of guests over the years. It originally provided accommodation for acquaintances of the Duke of Hamilton, the laird of Brodick Castle. And later, it was the base for prospective Submarine Commanding Officers while completing their rigorous training on the Royal Navy’s gruelling Perisher Course. The original two and a half storey residence was built in 1782 and is typical of a sizeable dwelling from that period. It later became the local doctor’s home and medical practice up until 1852 when it was converted into a hotel. A red sandstone (quarried on Arran) and slate-roofed extension was then added to the front of the original house in 1858 and the grounds were landscaped. The first manager of the hotel, a successful hotelier by the name of Peter Macdonald, was brought to the island from Glasgow by the Marquis of Douglas, and he became a well-respected member of the community. This coincided with the removal of the island’s ferry port from below Brodick Castle at the other side of Brodick Bay to its current location on the pier, so encouraging a brisk tourist trade. Nowadays, the Hotel opens daily at 10am for tea, coffee and scones! #arran #douglashotel #brodick outdoors #hiking #walking #hillwalking #scottishhighlands #scottishhills #scottishhillwalking #theoutdoorfolk #theoutdoorsawaits #theoutdoors #outdoorphotography #outdoorphotographer #outdoorphotoshoot #hikingscotland #scotlandexplore #roddymck #roddyjmck #roddymckinnon This picture 2024- along the Arran Coastal Path. Wall hanging in the Douglas Hotel of the most famous landmark in Catacol - a row of terraced 19th-century cottages known as The Twelve Apostles. The 'Apostles' were built in the 1860s to accommodate people cleared from land in the island's interior so that the land could be used for deer stalking, then a popular activity amongst the upper classes. Catacol itself is a picturesque hamlet just south of Lochranza, in the northwestern corner of Arran. Its name come from Old Norse and translates loosely as 'gully of the cat'. This is thought to refer to wildcats that were once native to the area. The village is known in botanical circles as the only place on earth where the Catacol Whitebeam grows. This oddity of plant life is a hybrid of the rowan and whitebeam trees. Only two known examples are thought to exist. You can walk up the Glen to where the trees are fenced in for preservation purposes. North of Catacol, on the road to Lochranza, is the Sailor's Grave, a stone memorial that marks the final resting place of a sailor who died of cholera at sea. When his ship put ashore and asked to bury the sailor's body in Catacol, the locals refused because they were afraid the corpse might bring cholera with it. Nowadays, this area is an ideal wild camping spot. #arran #lamlash #douglashotel #brodick outdoors #hiking #walking #hillwalking #scottishhighlands #scottishhills #scottishhillwalking #theoutdoorfolk #theoutdoorsawaits #theoutdoors #outdoorphotography #outdoorphotographer #outdoorphotoshoot #hikingscotland #scotlandexplore #roddymck #roddyjmck #roddymckinnon This picture 2024- along the Arran Coastal Path. Twenty red Arran sandstones can be found all around the island showing the name of a featured artist and are placed in the landscape that inspired their work. Born in Glasgow, Sir David Young Cameron (1865 – 1945), one of Scotland’s most celebrated artists of the early 20th century. Located on the highpoint of the road on the path between Brodick and Lamlash, this vantage point gives unparalleled views to the mountains of Arran in the North. From this height all of the major peaks can be observed, from Ben Nuiss and Ben Tarsuinn in the west, to Cir Mhor and Goatfell in the East. A trail to Claughlands hill, site of an Iron Age Hill fort can also be accessed from this site. From 1908 onwards his work, inspired by The Glasgow Boys among others, moved largely into oil painting, with Arran again features heavily in his output, with ‘Cir Mhor’ in 1912, and his ‘Hill of the Winds’ in 1913 both showcasing his austere style. Nowhere is this perhaps more prominent than in his celebrated work ‘The Hills of Arran’ , also of 1913, which depicts the craggy mountain landscape as a brooding and somewhat menacing silhouette. In 1917-18 he would become an official war artist for Canada, depicting scenes in France. Cameron’s later work made much more use of a lighter palette, no doubt influenced by his post-war journeys to Italy and France, and in 1920 he was elected as a Royal Academician. Cameron was the King's Painter and Limner in Scotland and lived for many years at Kippen in Stirlingshire. He would die in Perth in 1945, leaving behind a large body of atmospheric work of the Scottish Highlands and Islands, as well as a reputation as one of the finest Scottish etchers in the 20th century. The pictured stone is not a memorial cairn but rather part of the Arran Arts Heritage Trail. #arran #brodick #Lamlash #outdoors #hiking #walking #hillwalking #scottishhighlands #scottishhills #scottishhillwalking #theoutdoorfolk #theoutdoorsawaits #theoutdoors #outdoorphotography #outdoorphotographer #outdoorphotoshoot #hikingscotland #scotlandexplore #roddymck #roddyjmck #roddymckinnon This picture 2024- along the Arran Coastal Path. Built in 1946, she sailed from Craigendoran on the Firth of Clyde to Arrochar on Loch Long until 1973. Arran whisky. The heavily-peated Machrie Moor Fingal's Cut Quarter Sherry Cask Finish edition is produced at the Lochranza Distillery on the Isle of Arran and is bottled for Lagg Distillery, based at the south end of the island. On Machrie Moor the rich archaeological landscape includes stone circles, standing stones, burial cairns and cists, as well as hut circles and an extensive field system, all dating to between 3500 and 1500 BC. The stone circles were preceded by elaborate timber circles on exactly the same sites. They were associated with religious activities dating back around 4,500 years. Humpback whale heading to Brodick. Humpback sightings in these waters are rare (normally spotted in Norway!) with one being christened ‘Hamish’ upon its visit to Largs waters in 2016 as it breached in front of Largs seafront. Humpback are baleen whales; they have large, sieve like plates of baleen hanging down from the inside of their mouths which can filter organisms from the water. They lunge into a school of fish or shrimp-like organisms, open their massive mouths widely and engulf huge quantities of water along with their prey. Some of the photos taken show the head of the whale as it emerges out of the surface water during this ‘lunge-feeding.’ “Humpbacks are able to take in large quantities because they have ‘throat grooves’ which expand as they take in water. As the water is forced back out of the whales’ mouth, prey is then sieved from the water using the baleen plates and eaten. Humpback display another spectacular activity called ‘bubble netting’ where the whale dives down and emits a continuous stream of air which traps fish in the centre of the ring, the whales then surface up through their bubble ‘net’ feeding on the trapped and confused fish. #whales #humpbackwhales #outdoors #hiking #walking #hillwalking #scottishhighlands #scottishhills #scottishhillwalking #theoutdoorfolk #theoutdoorsawaits #theoutdoors #outdoorphotography #outdoorphotographer #outdoorphotoshoot #hikingscotland #scotlandexplore #roddymck #roddyjmck #roddymckinnon This picture 2024- after a day along the Arran Coastal Path. The summit of Sgurr na H-Ulaidh , good to get a new Munro ticked off . And wee landmark reaching 200 but the last 4/5 years have been slow due to getting a new dog each year . I flew through the 1st 100 but the 2nd 100 have been a lot slower 6/7 years due different reasons but I am back on it now . All my dogs are old enough now too , so all good . #munro #munrobagging #scottishhillwalking #getoutside #scenery #dogsandpals

A Corbett kind of day. Mostly pathless, boggy and ticky. But it was short, there were mini eggs and it was a beatiful day, so it was okay. . . . . . #SgùrranUtha #glenfinnan #corbett #scottishhillwalking

⛰️⛰️ North-East 3 Peaks ⛰️⛰️ So this weekend me and my good buddy Strathie did something we have been speaking about for absolutely aaaages. We completed the holy trinity of hills in the local area and climbed Bennachie, Clachnaben and Scolty Hill in one day, one after another. Took Bruno along for the ride for what was a total of 1,100m of incline and over 4 1/2 hours, 28k steps and 2,000 calories burned. And if we did 28k steps, Bruno would have done at least 40k! Great day out, with some cracking banter, the day flew in and can’t wait to do it all again in another year. If anyone would like a bit more of a challenging day out on the hills, which isn’t quite venturing into Munro territory then highly recommend these 3!
