Glas Maol 4 41,42,43 and 44 Carn an Turic, Cairn of Claise, Glas Maol, and Creag Leacach. This started off as my first camp and Munro trip, camped just below the ski centre of the old military road. The day started off clear then quickly all visibility was lost on the ascent of Carn an Turic due to snow fall. Navigation was made tricky going to Cairn of Claise but once the quad bike trial was found it was easy going from there. Cairn of Claise to Glas Maol was a long but enjoyable slog through soft snow with some views finally opening up. The nail in the coffin was the final push up Creag Leacach which seemed like false summit after false summit until we reached the true point. The descent back to the car was long as the by-pass around Glas Maol was covered in a sheet of ice and a massive cornice above. A long walk across the plateau to the east of Glenshee 29th December . Four Munros: 🏔️Carn An Tuirc 1019m 🏔️Cairn Of Clause 1064m 🏔️Glas Maol 1068m 🏔️Creag Leacach 987m Left Callater bothy about 10 am (yes I know 🙄 what use is a winter hillwalker who can't even get out of bed at a proper time?) Got to the first summit at 12. And the fourth summit at 4 at sunset. My map blew away in the wind at the fourth summit (it blew away twice. I found it the first time. Felt very silly for stuffing it down my jacket instead of clipping it on) Walked back across the plateau retracing my footsteps. Arrived back at 10pm. 12 hours total. Nice bothy. No fireplace but a very good toilet with a urinal made out of a water cooler bottle. The Glenshee road was closed on the 28th while I walked to the bothy. Chair lift was closed when I took that photo. Eerily peaceful at the top of the closed ski run. There was a weird bit of aircraft wreckage which was supposedly found in a river. GLAS MAOL CIRCUIT OF 4 MUNROS! Our boys are now on 37 Munros. So proud of them. Glas Maol is the highest of the four Munros on the east side of the Cairnwell Pass. It took us close to 7:30 for 12 miles with lunch included. First up was Carn an Tuirc then Cairn of Claise, then Glas Maol before Creag Leacach. Very safe in good weather but need to be able to walk long distances with kids. Some images from the summit of Cairn of Claise, as the sun was starting to set back in August. I'd used up most of the golden evening light, distracted by short eared owls on the Mounth plateau. (See an earlier post for the owls...) As I got to the top, I reached out to tap the top of the summit cairn, as is tradition when bagging a Munro. Just before I did, I noticed that it wasn't a stone on top of the cairn, but a present left by a hooligan owl. See if you can spot the chunky pellet! A great evening walk. I just spotted an unknowingly bagged trigpoint in my Facebook memories from 5 years ago! Glas Maol, up on the summit of one of the Glenshee 9 Munros. Starting point was the Glenshee Ski Resort. I was 31+7 weeks pregnant when @barefootveganmarti, David and I bagged 3 of the 4 Eastern Glenshee Munros. We had decided to ditch the fourth Munro Munro Creag Leacach as we'd have had to head there and double back and it was getting on a bit. Quote from my Strava/Facebook: "Great day out. Baby's first three Munros ⛰ Warm and mostly sunny, quite a breeze at times as usual! Need to learn how to read a map! We spent a glorious afternoon climbing Cairn An Tuirc, Cairn of Claise and Glas Maol with a total ascent of 2,500ft and just over 10 Miles. 31+7 weeks pregnant 🤰 The first Munro isn't an easy climb, actually, very rocky and quite steep, although of course you start pretty high up near the #Glenshee Ski Centre already. I won’t mention the actual temperature however, as you overseas people would probably laugh at our feebleness, but it has been a heatwave for us and certainly not something pasty pale skinned Scots such as I are made for 🫠 I went for a pleasurable but exhausting hike round the Glas Maol circuit. Clear skies, zero cloud cover, a blistering sun – thank the gods that I remembered the sun cream. Whilst I took plenty of water, it wasn’t enough. Towards the end of my hike, I was fantasising about a cool glass of orange juice, even imagining the beads of moisture trickling down the glass. My thirst was unquenchable. Perhaps brought on by sunshine delirium, childhood memories were triggered in my parched brain synapses, and I found myself having such an unassuageable urge for a Flintstones ice pole, specifically a blue one – Do you remember them? Oh god, I am salivating at the thought of one right now. #graeme_c

Fantastic Saturday in Glencoe today. We ticked of 4 Munro’s over the course of a 24km hike. Most of the day was a complete white out with heavy snow for most of the day at higher levels. Thank god for gps or we would’ve had to scrap it. The views we did see where spectacular. The rest was a proper test of endurance. I travelled with a fairly strong expectation that the first Munro of the day could have been it once the protection afforded by the mountain had gone and the forecasted high winds had hit home! *** 📍Càrn an Tuirc (1019m/3343ft) 📍Cairn of Claise (1064m/3491ft) 📍Glas Maol (1068m/3504ft) 📍Creag Leacach (987m/3238ft) *** Although this is in the Glenshee Ski Centre area, the starting point is a couple of kms down the road which means the starting altitude is a bit more normal (lower) than what you start at for The Cairnwell. *** I couldn’t quite work out what was best, park at the start, middle or end? If you’ve done these Munros, what did you do??? *** The wind was strong and high but didn’t actually have much of an effect on the walking! Visibility wasn’t great but little breaks would come and go, with the best views at the end of the day. *** Once up on your first Munro, the walking is pretty easy going. Plan was the Glas Maol 4 plus Tolmount and Tom Bhuide but I decided to just stick to the 4 which very quickly became 2 when the weather turned quicker than expected and the wind was actually trying to cut me in half ! Glenshee yesterday to complete the full set up there and to hit my self made target of completing 30 munros before winter takes over the mountains!! Did the round of 4 at Ghlas Maol (Creag Leacach, Glas Maol, Cairn of Claise and Càrn an Tuirc) and added the 2 extra ones at the back (Tom Buidhe and Tolmount) in for good measure, almost killing off my legs in the process 😅 So my total so far now sits at 33 🥳🥳 Last year I managed to complete 6 single munros solo over the whole summer, doing 6 in one day was something I would never have thought I would be able to manage, I was in awe last year of people that did multiple munros in one day. This summer since mid July, in just 2 and a half months, I've bagged 25 munros!!! Push yourself beyond your comfort zone people, do the things that you've always wanted to do, the things that seem out of reach because the thought terrifies you. It's so worth it, life is for living, go and experience it all!! Have other things on now for the next couple of weekends and probably won't manage to get out to do anything as far as munros go so chuffed I managed to hit the 30 this week although this was a tough wee round to do it on 🤣🤦🏼♀️ Disappearing non existent paths, tiny paths along steep mountain sides with steep drops, boulder fields, the now standard fkn bogs 🥴 tricky river crossings and the relentless, uphill, soul destroying walk back to the car along the road in the dark!!! Part 2 of 3#️⃣ . Cairn of Claise▲Tolmount▲Tom Buidhe▲Glas Maol▲, Spittal of Glenshee, Braemar, Scotland📍🏴⛰️ . . This next section was a nice easy walk albeit very loooong! The walk along the tops only required a little bit of re-ascent, much less than what we have experienced on previous routes though so the hardest part is keeping the legs going! . The clouds started coming in during our jaunt over to Tolmount following the bagging on Cairn of Claise. . The route from Cairn of Claise to Tolmount, then over to Tom Buidhe and back was pretty pathless. There was a path, but we lost it and decided to trudge through the bog instead which wasn't actually too bad, just a few skips and quick stepping required😄🐶 . The route from Tom Bhuide to Glas Maol was loooong although not technically challenging. I didn't get a photo of Piper at the top of Glas Maol because I was too focused on scranning my out of date, emergency Bounty that had been lingering at the bottom of my hiking bag for months🥴 . Overall, this section gets a 5/5⭐️ for ease . 🔸️Nothing technically challenging, just some wet ground . 🔸️Not too much in the sense of ascent, just small steep bits just before each summit but it never lasts too long . 🔸️Soft underfoot to ease the joints . 🔸️Fine for pooches to be offlead in between, however keep an eye on those that like to munch frogs . ❗️We counted 1 clean-ish water source, really not much up here and we had run out by time we summited Glas Maol.
