THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT PINEAPPLES 🍍 * 1 x Pineapple take up to two years to be ready for harvesting. * After a pineapple has been cut from its parent plant another fruit will start to develop called the ratoon crop. * Once this ratoon crop is harvested the plants are usually mulched into the ground and the tops from previously harvested fruit (or slips that form within the original plants) are planted to begin the cycle again. This explains why some pineapples in the shops don’t have crowns! (Ours do tho 😇) New fruit can grow from these crowns or the suckers of the plant (not from the seeds), with an individual plant able to grow anywhere between 60-120 cm high. We had a surprise in the garden today! Two of our potted pineapple plants which had produced beautiful sweet pineapples for us last year are sending up flowers again for a second time! These plants were from tops cut off of pineapples bought at the grocery store. We cut the tops off, set them aside for a few days to dry a bit, and then put them in pots of soil. We had neglected these plants after the harvest and pulled the pots to the south side of our house and let the rains water them, mostly because I injured my right (dominant) hand last year and could not do much garden work for about four months. Amongst the plants that enjoyed the recent heat wave are definitely pineapples. 👏. I have two fruit coming up this year, but it will take many more months before I harvest. You have to be patient, it will take about three year before a freshly planted pineapple top (green top cut off a shop pineapple) is established and mature enough to produce fruit. So keep an eye out for when you do your next shopping and just keep planting. They don’t take much room and are so easy to grow. I found the best spot to plant them is near a fruit tree trunk. Here they benefit from the regular dose of fertiliser and water these will receive anyway. I love growing pineapple’s. It takes a while but so satisfying and so much better tasting the anything at the market. Takes about 1 year after it starts growing roots (which can take a month or longer) We started with our first pineapple when we arrived on island 10 years ago, now we must have 8 plants growing and 3 in water growing roots, and get a pineapple every few months from all the pineapples we have, we just keep cutting off the top and putting it back in water to grow more roots…and a new plant will begin. I don’t think I’ve bought a pineapple in years from our mini pineapple farm here. Some get so big and some are smaller. Noticing the soil and fertilizer make a huge difference on what you use, plus drying them out a little before watering again is a plus. #growingpineapples #pineapples #mauipineapple
